It will go to a public beta after the backstagers finish their stint of testing.

We'll be posting loads about that soon.

Hi all

I'm enjoying reading the reports on the rules over at BoW's backstage, it'll be good to be aware of some issues before I play some games later.

I won't be playing large games though. As it is I have a dodgy back and have to cart half of the 41st Millennium with me whenever I play a game of 40k round my Brother's - so I'll be playtesting with smaller armies (max 500pts). It will be good to see how it goes with smaller units and no vehicles, bringing it down to a more 'skirmish' size.

@BOW: I look forward to more video goodness guys, I trust you'll get Alessio and/or Ronnie in to discuss how they think it went? It's the first experiment I've heard of its kind anyway. I'm looking forward to the Beta to see what changes are made

I have to say I love the Forgefather concepts shown from 'On the Table' and hope the sculpts deliver

The scale of Warpath is small already. 1000 points of warpath is roughly equal to 500 points of 40k.

To illustrate the point, here is a 1000-point Warpath List made up of:

- 1 hero
- 2 units of 10 regular infantry
- 2 units of 5 elite infantry
- One vehicle

32 models total.

1000pt Forgefathers Roster

* Scrappers Section (150pts)
2x Heat Hammer (60pts)

* Steel Warriors Section (230pts)
Hailstorm Autocannon (30pts), 2x Heat Hammer (60pts)

* Forgeguard Team (170pts)
Crushing Strength (6), Lumbering
Dragon Breath (30pts)

* Grizzlers Team (145pts)
2x Hailstorm Autocannon (60pts)

* Heavy Drakkar (210pts)
Stabilised, Transport (10)
2 Hailstorm Autocannons [R] [L]

* Huscarl (95pts)
Crushing Strength (1), Individual, Inspiring, Piercing (2)
Forgeguard Battlesuit (Lumbering), Heat Hammer (30pts)

@scarletsquig: True. It's just getting used to the system and how points equate to models/army compositions - I feel like a noob again

I'd expect points values to be tweaked for the Beta though.

Thanks for that ScarletSquig, it does give us an idea of how an army will look on paper. Sounds pretty neat so far!

Are mechanized walker units expected to be part of the game? I'd really like to see those make an appearance. Something ghastly like the Tiger Mecha from SOTR, not just a wee support walker. The main battle tank with legs. They seem common in 15mm games and ranges, but rarely so for 28mm.

Dear Mantic: please send us some early fluff, get our brains turning about what's happening in this universe! Tell me protagonists, antagonists, and the kind of reasons as to why people are fighting. I need some indication where this universe is going, and whether I dig the landscape.

@Dead_Kennedy: I wouldn't expect that for a while. They are primarily a toy soldier company, a gaming company second - they have a 3 year plan for KoW and will probably have a similar one for Warpath. In the mean time they are fighting because they (we) like too

I too would like to see some epic background (and walker's), they might surprise us but I wouldn't count on it just yet, I think the miniatures are their priority for now.

I've signed up for backstage and finsihed a brief readthrough of the rules yesterday.

Some highights.
-Streamlined movement rules.
-Streamlined shooting rules. Slightly fewer rolls than 40k. Less charts also as you're rolling against a stat rather than a stat compared to a stat on a table.
-Damage is tracked based on applying a damage tally to a unit rather than by removing models. Reminds me alot of how many of the smaller scale games base multiple figures on a base. Warpath could be easily played with figs kept on movement trays or using multbased figures at smaller scales.
-Plenty of special rules to add some variation where the streamlined main rules may have simplified things.
-Aimed at larger battles. Each unit has entries for 5, 10 and 20 figure units.

All in all, I'm reasonably pleased. It really looks like a faster way to play larger battles, and it is very clearly focused on larger battles. Of the two army lists look pretty clearly aimed at Squats and the other is pretty clearly an Ork list.

I don't mind at all that this is clearly aimed at the 40k crowd, but it may annoy some. As I've mentioned elsewhere, if the force lists that are eventually released cover enough of the various types and brands of sci-fi figures that my club and I own, we'll probably give it a chance. However, there are no unit design rules at this time, so if the force lists aren't varied enough, it's unlikely that it'd become our go-to game.

I think warpath could work a lot better if they just used a "command range" for the leader similar to Warmachine. All models within X" of their commander are in coherency.
Gets rid of a lot of the niggly placement and allows you to rock on with playing with minimal fuss.

Agreed. No need to have two coherency parameters.

I also think there's a heckuva lot of special case rules for such a small rule set when compared to Kings of War. I know 40k has folks going for a lot of vehicles but I think things would be simpler if they would stay more infantry centric.

Hi privateer4hire.
The reason Warpath has lots more special rules, is the same reason 40k has lots of special rules.

They both use a napoleonic rule set with modern units , and HAVE to cover the gaps with special rules.

If Warpath used more aproppriate game mechanics , they could cover ALL units with the core rules .

I am happy to discuss alternatives if you want to?

EG list movment type (Symbol) and Speed.

(L) 5" means the unit walks on legs up to 5" per movement action.(Infantry)

(T) 8" means a tracked unit that moves up to 8" per Movement action .(Tracked vehicle)

(F) 24" means a unit that flies up to 24" per movment action.(Airoplane-skimmer )

Then we could use Hit Points (HP) to show how much damage a unit could take .
(Number of models in an infantry unit , number of systems/wounds in a vehicle -monster.

Defence - is how hard the unit is to damage.

Stealth- is how hard the unit is to hit with ranged weapons

Nerve- is how willing the unit is to fight on .

Command- how good the unit leader is.

And list weapons profile of the unit .
Name /Range /damage/effect/special.

Lasgun/24"/6/1/-small arms.

Flamethrower/Temp/7/temp/suport -ignore cover.

Heavy Machine gun/36"/8/3/fire support -supp +d3.

6 characteristics and 4 weapon charactersitics is not exactly complicated is it?

But this lest us define ALL units with the core rules and game mechanics.

Just a thought.

Absolutlely not bashing WP. On the number of special rules, I know they give more 'flavor' and variety but they also increase weird synergies. This plus that makes a crazy effective unit so that virtually every list includes one or more of that unit.
Just an observation.

I think WP would be better served staying infantry centered versus vehicle heavy. 40k's current incarnation makes meching up very advantageous with the benefit of selling a lot of tank models.
Might be nice to return to the days of a grunts being the center of the battle.

I also suggest getting rid of ALL templates. Templates at best are a rough guesstimate. At worst, they are argument-makers in even friendly games. War of the Ring remedied this by having weapons of x caliber do xd6 of damage and weapons of y caliber doing yd6 of damage. You still have larger potential for wounds on affected units but without the silly repositioning/that isn't touching my sergeant model, etc.

The rules seem fine I guess, but I don't care about the rules, it's all about the models for me, which they haven't shown at all. There's a sketch of a space orc, looks like a 40K ripoff. I bet we'll see all the 40K races renamed and regurgitated in Warpath eventually. I'd love to see Mantic do something original instead of just trying to cash in on the GW haters. I was hoping Warpath would be it, but so far I'm less than impressed :(

God, I really hate to be a downer, but honestly, I'm not too fond of it.

I read the KoW rules, and I wasn't too impressed, really. I was hoping Warpath would be different, but meh.

I kinda agree with Necros on the GW haters point. If the game was different and the armies weren't GW armies repackaged to look different, then I'd be honestly excited.

I downloaded the beta, and the two army lists (Marauders and Forgefathers). Me abd my friend played a game yesterday, and I crushed him!!! The idea of not removing miniatures appealed to us, but the w40k ripoffs are a bit of a downer. However, on my mini game day with my friends, Warpath will be the ruleset being used, with two new army lists, two army lists that have a suspicious similarity to units and armies from the starwars universe....

Many and varied forces in progress according to waxing & waning whims.

I may never finish an army in my life.
