So while perusing the gaming section in the local Barnes and Noble I found a new wargamming book centered on modern warfare. Force on Force Modern Wargaming Rules. Published by Osprey and developed by Ambush Alley Games.

The nicest thing about the system that struck me was it is scale independant. So one can use whatever scale miniatures one wants. Anyone had any experience playing this? What's your take on it?

I have not played it myself, but it is popular. The futuristic variant is very popular... in particular for a not-yet-released game set.

I dont just play it... I write for them and all the pics of figures you saw in the book are my ones.

Great game, very enjoyable.

I've tried the asymetric Ambush alley rules out and they worked well enough for the task.

I played it in 20mm, but I can also play it in 28mm if I choose to (have enough 28mm modern troops to do it).

Although I DID used to play moderns in 20mm back in the 80s and early 90s (mates and I (some armed forces personnel) would replay encounters from Opesert Storm (1990) based off CNN reports of the time. Seriously thinking of redoing them using AA just to see how they go.

Of course, there's more historical reference now, so that makes it easier.

The ruleset looks very very good, there was a good write up in this months WI and Tactical Wargaming.

I really really like the look of it but i'm finding it difficult finding a nice miniature range for 15mm.

My painting and Gaming blog, check it out and let me know what you think.

Somewhere in south-central England.

20mm is compatible with the widely available 1/72 scale model kits for vehicles and aircraft.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Yep, and there are even 'toy' lines in that scale.

There were a couple of sets of these at a local store that I grabbed (LAV, 5 marines and some sandbags, Stryker, marines and sandbags, Blackhawk, etc). I have 20 USMC, 3 LAV/Stryker vehicles and a blackhawk eggbeater.

I have to find my old 1980s/1990 period 1/72 USMC.

great rules . worth your time i use 1/72 scale plastic minatures from ceasar minatures . cheap bang for your buck . you can by a box of modern americans and insurgents for about $ 12.00 for over 50 figs and mount them on pennies and they make every vechicle in the world in the 1/72 scale . and are pretty compatiable with 20 mm metal minatures cheap investment get you rite in . check my gallery for examples of my modern games . force on force is a must ... very fresh wargaming rules !

GAME OVER MAN ! check out my blog http://mattrendar.blogspot.com/?m=1

If you want to see loads more 20mm figures...

www.guildwargamers.com

That forum is dedicated almost solely to gaming WW2 and Moderns in 20mm. We have most of the manufacturers on the forum too. The members area has a ton of galleries.

And ofcourse:

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.
