Hey guys

I'm playing 1000 points against a skilled Ork player and his WAAARGH! on Tuesday. I need some general tips or strategies for an Imperial Guard army to defeat them. A sample list or two would be awesome too, I have a range of models and price is no object because i was looking to expand anyway.

Thanks in advance!

This has potential to hurt orls bad at 1000pts. I don't know what your ork friend is bringing.

Hit him as much as possible from range. when he closes the gap, use the vets as assault troops. Maybe.

As an ork player, I find flamer equipped squads kept off the table in reserve in a transport to be highly annoying.

It's difficult for you because there are 3 - 4 reasonable builds of orks, a testament to how well written the codex is.

Flamers are a good option. Do you knwo what kind of army this guy uses? As the previous poster said, there is a wide range of them. Meltaguns are always useful, though. And flamers.

if you don't know what he's bringing at all then best bet is
to be able to deal massive damage from a distance and still be able to maneuver and fight when he's close. At 1000 pts I'd leave the leman russes at home. Go for numbers of units. Also, hope to go first.

A small elite guard army with lots of AP1 and AP2, in my experience, is usually a welcomed opponent for orks. They find it easy.

Kill the fast moving units.
Be weary of Lootas, if he has them, they will rock your AV 12.
Two-to-three seperate Hydra Flak Tanks scares orks. Ordnance just ain't what it used to be against these guys..

A griffon is a cheap and reasonable accurate way to put pain on dismounted orks, especially Lootahs.

I say put heavy bolters on your tanks to increase the amount of fire you can put on the advancing orks.

My chimeras usually sport heavy flamers, but that is for all-comers. A chimera with Heavy Bolter and Multilaser is often better against orks than you might think. Busting open trucks at range. Or putting on extra wounds at range.

1000pts is tight. You'll have to play tight. Use vendettas to shoot battlewagons on side armour or hit characters, bikers, koptas, buggies etc...

Fighting orks in small point games is tough. Luckily, IG is the civilized horde army, so you can counter with troops a plenty.

I would take everything I could in chimeras to close the gap and give your troopers some cover as you do work. I still like using pie against orks, so I pack a basilisk or two if I can squeeze it in. Aim you blast templates for center of mobs and hope for low scatter.

Other than that, DO NOT LET THEM CHARGE YOU! You cannot win against an ork mob on the charge with IG, so if you have to, charge with a canon fodder unit while you get into a position to better handle the oncoming green.

Orks struggle with AV14 so a Leman Russ or two will go a long way, everyone lovers a battlecannon!

Remember the Lumbering Behemoth rule and keep them moving and firing as the Orks close, since they only have PK that will harm them and hitting on a 4 or a 6 makes a differance.

21 man powerblob squads work well against his more elite units, I also arm mine with meltaguns. They will be less efficient against hordes of boyz but hopefully the LR will take care of them.

Also i'll second what someone else said and propose Griffon mortars. I always have one, but would probably stretch to two if I knew I was facing lots of orks.

We don't struggle against AV14 front armor, it only prevents the tank from being shaken by lootaz. However, battlecannons are great for blasting orks.

You may not move more than 6" and still fire your cannon, so orks will always hit you on a 4+ unless you forgo shooting. Common misconception for IG players, but lumbering behemoth does not work at cruising speed (6-12").

Yup, those are scary, as well as hellhounds. Just make sure you don't deploy any artillery into lootaz firing lanes, or they might never shoot for the whole game.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Vendetta to get them out of their Battlewagons them move in with Hellhounds. Orks hate Hellhounds. Keep moving 12" and be generous with your promethium. Fitted with a HHF even the 1st wpn destroyed result wont hurt too much and return PC swings need 6's to hit.

I've also found a PCS kitted with HF and/or a couple of flamers in a Chimera with turret and hull HF thrown straight at a mob crisps them up nicely for 100ish points.

Support with Hydra and a standard Russ chassis, throw in platoons volley firing and add vets to flavour to taste, depending on where you feel your list is weak.

Mmmm....delicious meat.

The Leman Russ Executioner model does some serious damage as well, especially if it is equipped with HB sponsons, hull mounts, and pintle mounts. I know this from experience. It can deliver accurate and devastating fire from its cannons as they are twin linked, and can decimate footslogging hordes.

You chaps have been very helpful! I am quite heavy bolter heavy atm, but i know that he has lots of Nobz with Power Klaws, or so he says. I'm not quite sure what these are but they sound tough. Also, what is a power blob? and how useful will the Punisher be on the field?

Punisher is massively overpriced for what it brings to the table. Others here disagree but I dont use or like them.

Powerblobs are 2 or more PIS joined together at deployment. Sgts get a power weapon each and then add a Commissar with power weapon. 20-50 stubborn men take an age for any assault unit to chew as they try and absorb the huge quantity of power hits coming back at them. They are quite unwieldy on the table tho.

Exterminator? Misses one of it's shots, two more get caught by cover, and doesn't even instant death koptas. Nice for killing buggies and trukks, but that's it.

A powerblob are multiple joined guardmen squards with a komissar and power weapons. Add other stuff for flavor. The punisher is unspectacular. When shooting at boyz 10 shots miss, 3 fail to wound, one is caught by armour. Yep, armour. That's six dead boyz if they don't get cover. A battle cannon will easily match that, instant-kill nobz and has much more range.

Quite agree with you but throw in the 3 heavy bolters and a pintle stubber and you have a lot of shots going down-range with him relying on his cover save. A little pricey I admit but nasty, unless the bikes/kopta's are running 10 strong.

Edit: Just remembered the points level being discussed. This tank is very pricey for a 1000 pt game.

Heres a take on all comers list that I used over the last 6 months.

I have beaten Boys horder, Kan wall and truck Nobz forces with this.

HQCCS, Lascannon, 2x Plasmagun and a Master of the Ordnance.

Troop 1 – PCS, 4x Meltagun in a Chimera.
PIS, Power weapon, Commissar with power weapon,Autocannon, meltagun.
PIS, Power weapon,Autocannon, meltagun.

Troop 2 – PCS, 4x Flamer.
PIS, Power weapon, Commissar with power weapon, meltagun.
PIS, Power weapon, meltagun.

Fast Attack 1 – Scout Sentinal with Autocannon

Fast Attack 2 – Scout Sentinal with Autocannon

Heavy Support 1 – Leman Russ, hull Heavy Bolter.

Heavy Support 2 – Griffon, hull Heavy Bolter.

The Sentinels are the because I like the models and can be quite handy in wrong footing your opponent especially in Objective games.

The MOO is just a bit of fun and like the Sentinels can be swapped out especially if you are tailoring for orks.

A hell hound eats orks for lunch, you can move 6" and still fire the hull flamer and the turret flamer. I have killed an entire 30 ork unit with one before.

Moving 12" and still shooting the big gun is much scarier than moving 6" and firing both

I recommend using a LR variant preferably a battle tank or demolisher as orks cannot out shoot guard and anything with heavy bolters as they will ignore most amour saves against orks. As recommended by other players don't let them get into combat with you maybe take defensive grenades in you command/forward potions. Also if you have them ratling sniper/snipers are effective even though they get there save some will die and they are pinning which will slow the orks down so i guess you could use mortars as well.

Uh, never use snipers against orks, we will laugh at them. Ork mobs above 10 are fearless, so usually you won't get to pin them.

Yeah i forgot about that rule since if i play orks it is against my friends brother who is about 14 so forgets that rule most of the time. I still think anything with a blast marker is very good.

Also if you're getting close enough to use hull-mounted heavy flamers, you're in trouble. There's usually a PK-wielding Nob in that mob of boys and, if he gets through, your vehicle is toast.

So here's a few units that are good at crunching Orks:

1) Banewolf w/ HHF move 12" and fire both weapons
2) Hellhound
3) Valkyrie with missilepods and HB sponsons. Move 6" and have 9 shots plus 2 large blasts, or move 12" and have 3 shots and 2 large blasts
4) griffon.... Easily one of the best weapons in the codex against Orks because of it's accuracy.
5) hydra. By itself not good, but in a squadron of 3 you've got 9-10 wounds per turn.
6) Manticore 4-12 str10 large blasts per game is just nasty.
