So should I use vengeance rounds with my sternguard to take out MEQs?

It depends on the scenario.

Vengeance rounds are pretty good at killing MEQ's if they are out of cover. If you are lucky you can ace a whole squad.

That is generally what they're designed for, but you would probably be best served using them on squads that wouldn't be able to then take a different kind of save, like cover. Try and catch marines out in the open.

You want to use Hellfire Rounds more often than not considering there's only so many saves that Marines can make.

Yeah, if shooting at a t4 target, vengence shall only be yours if they dont have a cover save AND you can afford to lose a few guys to overheats.

10 sternguard shoot 20 shots, and 3-4 overheats expect to pop up. How mad would you be if you lost 1-2 sternguard to kill what averages out to ~7 enemy marines, considering that 20 hellfire shots get you 3.7 dead marines without the risk of overheats?

Don't use vengeance rounds against plague marines.

I remember once it was 10 sternguard vs 7 plague marines. 2 sternguards died to overheat, 1 plague marine died to vengeance round.

I lol'd

Its not a question of whether which unit to use it on. Its more about the urgency to kill the target. If you really want to kill something, youll use it even if they are in cover.

After all, Elite, Fast attack and Heavy support slots are meant to die.

I would almost always fire the hellfire rounds because I very rarely shoot at a squad with only one unit. With in the context of armies I tend to run I usually have plenty of anti-tank and and anti-infantry ranged. So I would more than likely use some risk free hellfire rounds and then whittle the squad down further with something else.

In the off chance my opponent allowed my sternguard to live the whole game and it was the last few turns of an objective game I might be inclined to use vengeance rounds to kill some MEQ's sitting on a point faster but this is highly situational.

Explain urgency to kill.
I can only imagine it as a bunch of plague marines that just walked on your objective, so please explain.

I believe hellfire rounds are idea in most cases. Someone did the math a while back and inflicting buttloads of wounds was a safe alternative to denying armor save, especially if cover was involved.

Ofcourse Vengeance rounds are ridiculous against Plague marines. You take my statement out of context.
