This is a tutorial on how I do my urban bases.

Prototype_X asked me to do this a while back but I was just to lazy at the time to do it.

They are fairly easy to do and the mats or really cheap. So here we go.

Colors used:

Adeptus Battlegrey

Astronomican Grey

Macharius Solor Orange

Chainmail

Badab Black

Devlan Mud

Mats used:

Any size base

Fine and medium sand (about a 7-1 ratio)

Wire mesh ( can get at any craft store for under $5.00. Got mine at Hobby Lobby)

Bits of spur

Left over chopped up bits

And anything you might want to use extra.

[img][img]

The next step is adding the wire mesh. For this base I completley covered the base with the mesh. I always let it overhang off some point of the base.

You don't have to completely cover the base. Most the time I just cover half or a quarter of the base. I use super glue for this part.

[img][img]

The next step if the one I enjoy the most. The adding of all the fun bits. As in the photo I used 2 small pieces of spur. I cut the exposed end with a pair of dikes so it is rough not smoth.

And this is where you can add anything you want. Scrap bits you may have still or skulls, weapons, anything you can think of for the most part. Again with the super glue.

After that drys I'll add the sand. I don't cover the whole base with sand just about 80-90% of it so the mesh is still exposed. I use standard PVA glue for this.

[/img][img]

Next is the priming. Wait till the glue has completely dried fist. I use gray primer but black works also. Have never tried it with white.

[/img][img]

After the primer dries I paint all but the metal bits with Adeptus Battlegrey. But any dark gray will work.

[/img][img]

Next I paint the metal bits with Chainmail and give the gray part of the base a Badab Black wash.

[/img][img]

Next I'll use watered down Macharius Solar Orange and wash the metal bits to give it a rust effect. But on the mesh I'll just do parts of it not the whole thing in the wash.

The Gray part of the base I will dry brush Astronomican Grey over the raised parts.

[/img][img]

Next I will again take the Chainmail and dry brush over the metal parts. Depending on how much rust you want to have showing is up to you. So less rust more dry brushing.

After the Chainmail dry brushing I'll give the metal parts a Devlan Mud wash just to dirty them up some more.

[/img][img]

And that is pretty much how I do my urban bases. Now all you have to do is add a model.

[/img][img]

And this is the final result. Well the ork isn't done but just to give you an idea of what it will look like with a model on the base.

Thanks for reading and if you have any questions or tips let me know. I'm glad to help or be helped.

I don't see why not. With IG you could add more to the bases cause the models are smaller and take up less room.

And the snow shouldn't be a problem either. Its gotta now in some of the Hive cities. And if not who cares.

I think people should create the models and bases anyway they want. I like the whole thinking outside of the box mind set.

So base away prototype_X. Base away.

I like! I may have to try this with a few models for kicks.

That's why I put it up Candroth.

I've gotten alot of help from Dakkadakka. So I figured might try to give alittle back.

I'm glad you like it.

Yeah, Dakka's good for that. (:

Most of my Dark Angels army is already based, but I have a bunch of Imperial Guardsmen that will need some love. I think I can have a lot of fun with some heavy weapon teams with this -- I'll try and remember to post a picture or three for ya when they're done. (Some day...)
