At L&L privateer press have announced a new game coming out in 2012, Level 7 a scifi game.

I'll be the first to say:

YESSS!!!

Now let's hope it's not a board game or something...

Any more details? I'm not crazy about the WM/H stuff, but a sci fi setting could be pretty interesting. I'd say if done right, and the factions look good, this could actually get me to give PP a try.

You can never beat your first time. The second generation is shinier, stronger, faster and superior in every regard save one, and it's an unfair criticism to level, but it simply can't be as original. - Andy Chambers, on the evolution of Games Workshop games

Yeah, that seems to be about all Privateer wants to announce at the moment. Unfortunate, but I'd still say it deserved a thread.

I'm always interested in more sci-fi options, but I'd need to hear a bit more before I get excited.

Did you guys hear that? I think it was the sound of the GW accountants' (because we know they are the only ones who care) going "oh feth."

Hopefully it's more than just WM in space... But I'm genuinely intrigued.

Crazy behaviour. Building hype is bad, Privateer. Your customers will get too excited and, I don't know, die or something before they can buy your models! Don't you care about your customers, Privateer?

I must say, I'm curious to see what they've come up with.

Really? Where do you get that from? Warcraft has steampunk in small amounts, but nothing near Waramahordes. They're really very different settings.

I think it's just the armor, it's all ornate and covered in filligree, kinda like any random set of WoW armor.

Pretty sure GW copyrighted giant pauldrons.

To be fair, GW gets criticized when they do announcements, such as Incoming! emails, without any accompanying photos or info, as well. People wanna hate GW regardless of what direction GW takes in engaging their customers.

If you stop right there, I will respectfully disagree. Massive robots are always cool. However, until GW creates an expansion or alternate rules set that focuses on skirmish level play, PP and other competitors have a corner on an area of tabletop gaming that is appealing to me more and more. Massive battles can be a blast, but quicker small scale games are right up my alley these days. PP has appealed to me somewhat in that regard, but none of the factions have jumped out at me, aside from mercenaries, and there's no starter set there. A sci fi setting with cool factions will more than likely get me to at least pick up some models and the rules and see how I like it.

If GW had any sense at all they should really be paying attention to how popular skirmish level games that have a low cost entry price are these days. It's alot easier to sell impulse buy starter sets from $50-100 than $400 armies that take months to paint.

Well no, they "hate" GW because GW used to give us something in the form of sneak peeks, and slowly over the years has been doing less and less to the point where now we just aren't going to get crap anymore. The "Incoming!" e-mails get bitched about because it's not the same as seeing a preview pic several months before the fact, like they did when the Ork models were coming out, we all knew what the trukk looked like painted up before it was up for advance order.

Everybody gets criticised when they make announcements without any actual content. That's nothing to do with hating on GW... which is far from groundless right now...

I suspect that they have been, and the reason they're not following suit is that the fact that WHFB and 40K are not small-model-count skirmish games is the one thing that still sets them apart from pretty much every other game currently on the market.

Turn 40K into just another skirmish game, and they're left trying to sell the game on the merits of the rules (which would be a little silly of them) or the models (which would be risky, given that so many other companies have closed what used to be a fairly wide gap in terms of quality)...

Being able to play big battles is about all that they have left.

I'm not at all suggesting they turn 40k into a skirmish game. What I am suggesting is an expansion, or even separate rules set for smaller scale games. They have the models available already, there would literally be no additional cost other than development for rules. I'd easily shell out $100 each for a few 40k races if there was a rules set that let me play a balanced game with 10-20 models, alongside walkers, bikes and smaller sized vehicles. What I no longer have the time or desire to do is buy and paint a 2000 point army. Those days are gone for me, but it doesn't mean GW can't still get my money with each new release if all I had to buy was 2-3 box sets to play a new race in a Kill team style expansion.

I think it would be both beneficial to players and GW to have something like this. It's more easily accessible for new players, and more affordable for current players or anyone who wants to jump on the newest, shiniest army. Although, if they prefer to ignore this segment of the gaming community, at least in my case, there's only so long I can buy necromunda models on ebay before I start looking to spend money on a current, and frequently updated, skirmish level game(in space).

Meh. They don't work in plastic, and they insist on burdening their models with silly pauldrons and silly hats.

Oh well, at least it might hurt GW, increasing the chance that they'll try to undo the damage they've inflicted on themselves.

Level 7? Sounds like a dungeon crawl. Space Hulk or Heroquest knockoff, calling it now.

They started releasing plastic models some time ago... It's not regular polystyrene, but still better than metal. In fact, given the detail level in their plastics, it's probably better that they went the way they did instead of just using polystyrene like everyone else.

Ill be expecting exactly that. IMO its not really a bad thing. At minimum it gives us a new source of scifi minis, and from one of the larger companies.

Ill await some product pictures before I get truly excited, but this is at least something to look forward to.

Does give it a bit of an "indoors" tone doesnt it? Well sine WM is generally a small numbers skirmish game...maybe we will get something along the lines of skirmish battles inside giant city ships or similar...
