So here's the link
http://tieba.baidu.com/f?kz=1108053031
Basically it's saying this is their pilot store in China. Opens July 9th at 10am near XinTianDi. Address is Number 245 MaDang Road, 2nd floor. My guess is it's a mall (the pic is a giveaway there, but I haven't been to XinTianDi for a while).
There seems to be a lot of interest in the responses under the pic. Not sure how many I know (there is a reasonably large Chinese player base) but I hope it means a lot of other players coming out of the woodwork.
So any expats or Chinese nationals reading this I hope you can make it down. I will get there about 1.30 after I finish work. Will be bringing some members of my gaming group and my armies so we can hopefully get some games arranged.

Fantastic!
I'll be there around noon as well. Looks like it's time to ship over my armies.
Unless I'm mistaken, tt's inside the new Xintiandi Mall, just behind the walking street of Xintiandi proper. Not a lot of customer traffic in there yet, but definitely good in terms of location.
Curious to meet the staff.

I have a feeling that it will be better off going to Zarks for stuff still. But at least they have a presence now so perhaps there will be some in store tournies and stuff. Would love for that kind of thing to be a common occurence. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and Ratboy just curious if I know you. Our gaming group is always at Zarks, maybe you have heard of us. A lot of foreign competitive gamers in the group.

I wonder how much it would cost to have stuff shipped from China. I bet their price point is going to be silly low. Maybe the Aussies can get their GW stuff cheap again.

Why would it be low? We already have a bunch of independent retailers who sell for prices higher than GW.

Not part of the culture.
That doesn't mean there isn't a bit of awareness.
You only need see those videos of the students with their 40K cosplay to know that Chinese can bite on it as much as anyone else.

When I was there (2007-9) it was just taking off, the players were a mix of ex-pats, Chinese returned from studying overseas (where they got into it) and Chinese who got into 40k from Dawn of War.
At first we were about half foreigners but the Chinese players soon eclipsed us in numbers. Chinese can be just as fanatical about 40k as anyone else (and if you've seen the cosplay videos you know they might be more).

I can see tabletop games kicking off once they see what it's about. The modeling aspect of the hobby, strategy, plus the already established appeal for fantasy and sci fi - all these things will resonate pretty heavy with ages 13 - 30.
I imagine a lot of people getting into it just for the painting.
A lot of Shanghai kids are spoiled rotten, so price shouldn't be much of an issue, especially if it's the type that frequent Xintiandi and Times Square Mall.
Lukus83 - I've only been to Zark once. I'm living in Luwan district and the commute was such a pain that I haven't gone back. I played for awhile at Atelier in Hong Kong in 2007-08. I'll definitely be at the opening... trying to find my old GW staff polo shirt.

Sorry have only collected nids and GK's so far. A Dread I can get for 320 yuan (49.5 dollars) and a razorback for 240 yuan (37.1 dollars). Looking at the British prices (since that's where I'm from and like to compare to) I can see we pay only a little over RRP. I'm impressed. But I do also receive a discount since I'm a regular local buyer. I guess if you do a large order you could also get a discount.
Not sure what prices will be like for shipped stuff though, and of course the GW could be cheaper or expensive. Will find out and let you know after saturday.

Sorry if this is threadomancy (its on the second page?)
I'm curious if GW has to compromise on what products it sells and displays?
I ask this because I remember when World of Warcraft got a slow "official" start in China because it pictured undead and demons and it went against the sort of stuff their culture department(or something to that effect, it was some sort of censorship committee) wanted displayed to their youth. Blizzard actually had to change some of their undead character options (like exposed bones at the elbows and knees, the awesome face with no jaw, etc etc.) I also think that some of the blood and gore was reduced as well in the game. Some might argue that GW has toned down the more brutal nature of the Warhammer IP over the years to be more appealling to the masses, but I still believe its more gruesome/dark then WoW, which needs to appeal to an even larger audience.
So my question to any Chinese GWers/others in the know, is GW subject to the same rules, or did those rules get abandoned or only apply to video games?

As far as I'm aware there were no restrictions. All of the stock is imported from the U.K so they go with whatever's on the cover over there.
And the Grand Opening was yesterday. Got to meet Ratboy and a few other new faces as well as a lot of locals. The location is actually really good. There's a large expat community flowing through this area and when they get off the subway to go into the mall you have to walk right past GW. Unfortunately I don't currently possess a camera so no pics but I was impressed. Nothing too grand, just a regular gaming store but with a bit more gaming space than we are used to over here.

So my question to any Chinese GWers/others in the know, is GW subject to the same rules, or did those rules get abandoned or only apply to video games?
GW is definitely subject to these rules, even more so than Blizzard since the army books are, well, books. All published works need to go through a review committee under the General Administration of Press and Publication department, which sits directly under the authority of the CCP Central Propaganda Department, which is under the CCP Politburo Standing Committee. The entire publishing industry in China is essentially state run. If GW wants to import their materials, they could be stuck with a lengthy bureaucratic review period.
Or, they might have to rely on imports via friends suitcases.
Side note:
Lukas, did you happen to get the phone number of the store? Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and all army books carried in the store will be in English for the next year or so.

About 12 years back Games Workshop had a number of stores in Hong Kong, I want to say 3-4...
Then they started to close them, but held on for years with only one on the island..
It became Fun Adleter and they are still open today

I was in HK when GW was open here, it's where I bought most of my stuff. Didn't really play much in store though since I had a gaming group with friends at home. Still remember when they had things like buy 2 get 1 free grand opening sales! Fun Atlier is now my local store, I think it's also the only place with a decent selection of GW product in HK now. I guess that even though we have 7 million people in the city it's only enough to support one store.
