ok, so I was playing this game where this necron player told me since only 3 of the squad members can have LOS and the other 2 is blocked so that means the other 2 can't fire?

However, I always been playing the rule where one sees, the whole squad sees.

He tells me that is 4th edition so can someone point this out in the 5th edition book please.

Thanks

They get cover. Don't have my rulebook on me at the moment, but look under the section on shooting and cover.

Each model must be able to trace LOS to the target unit in order to fire its weapon.

Note that cover is determined only by counting the models firing. So if you have a 6 man unit where 3 have clear LOS, 2 have partial LOS and 1 has no LOS, you have 5 models firing, only 2 of which are firing through cover which is not enough for the target to claim a cover save for the unit.

Its also possible to have certain models to volunaritly not shoot in order to deny cover saves in this same way.

It wasn't true in 4th edition either.

Only those models that have LOS can shoot. However, you only need LOS to a single enemy model in order to shoot at the whole unit... which is probably where you were getting confused.

See page 16, under 'Which Models Can Fire?'

Line of sight for the firing unit is determined on a model-by-model basis. This is at the bottom of page 16 under the heading "Which Models can Fire?"

On the flip side, even if only one model of the target unit is visible, the entire unit can/must take casualties.

Only models which have LoS to a model in the target unit can join in the firing. P.16, bottom right hand corner, Which Models Can Fire?

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

As has been said, only models that can draw LoS can fire. But if only one unit can be seen they can shoot at the whole squad, provided they get an appropriate cover save for how many of them are hidden.

it says in the book that only one model in the unit needs line of sight of a model to see the whole unit. Basically if it has more than 3 shots to take it can take out 3 units potentially. Now if you shoot at that unit only the models with LOS can fire so if one model does not then it cant. For example i have 9 rangers and 3 have perfect LOS then I would get 3 shots and ONLY 3 unless for some reason they were possibly if they were 3 shots a peice then 9. Now lets get back to it if i shoot my 3 shots and all 3 hit, and its a squad of 9 he must take 3 saves on the SQUAD not one person. There you go!

I'm going to be utterly useless and agree with everyone.

Now go away, nagging message.

The only scenario where this can happen(that I know of) is with a Psyker Battle Squad for IG. They have 'psychic choir' so they all draw LOS from 1 model, allowing all 9 to shoot out the back of a chimera.

But for the vast, vast majority, only those with LOS can fire.
