So I was looking through the gallery one day and saw a guy had made a base for his Catachans, I think the tag is FoB Devil. The whole thing looked really cool so I figured I would try my hand at it.

So I am going on the idea that a Cadian army just defeated somebody and drove them into the hills. A ring of Patrol Bases were established along the enemy territory to keep tabs on them and quickly intercept any incursions. The patrol base has a small, heavily armed garrison and an elite strike force which tracks down the enemy and patrols the frontier.

In model/game terms the strike force is 3 veteran squads, a HQ squad, a Leman Russ Squadron, and a Manticore. The infantry will have Chimeras. A fourth veteran squad is going to be based on Catachans, they will be a recon/ambush unit. The vets will have the camo and extra field gear to emphasis they spend time outside the base.

The Garrison is a HQ squad and a big Infantry platoon. The platoon will have at least 3 squads, 2 heavy weapon squads, and a special weapon squad. Im trying to decide what kind of ordinance battery to use. Ill also throw in a couple Sentinels. These guys will have a different armor color to show they stay behind the walls.

The base is probably going to be the GW Strongpoint unless I can find something cooler.

Ooh, more guardsmen. I like. They have a nice color scheme to them. Consider me subscribed. I've also seen FoB Devil, and I was surprised at the sheer awesomeness, I hope you can pull something similar off.

Nice scheme on the Cadians. Good luck.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. Loving the paint scheme. The bases leave a little to be desired though, maybe a spot of grass or a lighter drybrush to add depth?

Thanks for the comments gents. I am looking at the bases. I have 3 different kinds of grass I am trying out. I may even repaint them.

Seconding all comments so far

Nice work, and looking forward to seeing the base come alive! (don't forget the sentry guns!)

Also, you don't happen to live in Basingstoke, do you? Additional kudos if the grunts' nickname for it is Pamber Green or Pamber End

Flinty I live in the great state of Texas. By the way your Terran thread is fantastic. These 2 guys are my Master's of Ordinance. I figure it would make sense for the base to have a couple guys to call in fire. The second guy is the color I am leaning towards for the garrison. Simple gray to match the walls. Ill see what a few look like together before deciding.

You're too kind

The paint job is nice. Where did you get the MOO optics from? The one criticism I have is that there are a lot of mould lines visible there. Its always worth scraping them down before assembing and painting.

The MOO head is from the Valkyrie door gunners. And you are totally right about the mold lines. I got these guys on ebay and didnt notice how bad they were until mostly done.

The heavy weapon teams have always rubbed me wrong, I just dont like those big bases. So I tried something new with the Mortar Squad. I figured a squad leader, 3 gunners, and 2 guys pulling security. Also have a little amo pile and the rifles stacked. I think it also gives the impression of a larger force. Im going to try something similar with the heavy bolters. Anyway....

Wow man, really interesting idea for the HWS. I quite like the big bases, but your way is very distinctive and realistic. If you play with them, I would establish some rules with your opponent, like only the mortar base and the loaders are really in the game for measuring, line of sight, hits etc. and the rest are just markers.

Also I like the use of valkyrie gunners as ordnance control, and I second the above comment - it really does help to trim mold lines.

Love the idea of a FoB for a guard army, now i want to build one!

I havent gotten much done lately. Baby had her first birthday and we are putting our house up for sale. Im sure that will be high adventure. I decided this project is going to do it for the year so I am going to give a shot at the narrative thing again. But not right now. Right now I have my 2 top HQ guys, a WIP Chimera, and a WIP Hvy Bolter. Im going with a bipod and no shield to give it a more mobile feel. Kinda running up, planting the weapon, and firing. Actually, what the hell.....

The Cadian 8th was sent to deal with a rebellion on an Imperial world. The rebels were quickly crushed and driven into a forested, mountainous region on the eastern portion of the largest and most populated continent. Creed was getting ready to shine some new medals when an Inquisitor arrived unannounced and began seconding IG units to search various ruins, libraries, and factories. Creed wasn't very concerned at first, the Inquisition does what they do, then his troops began vanishing. Those who returned possessed intelligence proving this was more than a minor, everyday, rebellion. The rebels were actually Chaos cultists who were trained in military tactics. As the 8th began more thorough searches of the bases and supply depots, Creed grudgingly admitted he did not crush the rebels. They had actually fought a tactical withdrawal. The rebel army was still largely intact and probably massing in the forest. Given this information and the unpleasant discoveries made by the Inquisitor, Creed sent for reinforcements and began fortifying his positions.

Creed created an "Alpha Line" of well armed and garrisoned patrol bases between the cities and the rebel positions. The Alpha Line was broken into 5 districts, each with 5 Patrol Bases. The Patrol bases are garrisoned by an Imperial Guard Company and a Mechanized Strike Force. All are close enough to support one another and deal with any rebels who try to breach the line. Patrol Base A340 is the 4th base in district 3. Once the lines were set, Creed began fortifying the city and waiting for reinforcements. He was also praying the Inquisitor didn't find anything else.

The tall slender guy with the Power Fist is the Base Commander. The Colonel is in overall command of the entire piece of real estate. He has been with the Cadian 8th since he was a cadet and it is said Creed himself has decorated the Colonel for bravery. The Colonel believes in firepower and insists his company is as heavily armed as possible. He has been known to maneuver his force for days, even avoiding contact, until he finds terrain which will allow his company to deploy and pound the enemy with heavy weapons as they approach. Obviously, he is an ideal officer for this assignment.

The guy with the beret is second in command and the leader of the Mechanized Assault force. The Major has been serving with the Base Commander for years and they have formed a solid bond. The Major is a master at striking hard and fast at the weakest point in the enemy line. A perfect compliment for a Colonel who knows how to pound an enemy with ranged weaponry. The Major leads his force on daily patrols in the district. He often engages small rebel units but has not come across anything too dangerous, yet.

Thanks Cain. The first Chimera is done. Painted in camo patterns matching the veterans. The entire Mechanized Strike Force will be painted like this. I am experimenting with weathering powders. Once I get it down all the tanks and the base will get the treatment.

Slow going on this one. Lots of things going on. I did manage to finish the medic and heavy flamer for the Majors command squad. Hopefully the Hvy Bolter teams will look less static than the big 60mm bases. I want the crews to look like they are carrying ammo and one of the guys be the squad leader. I posted a group shot. I am particularly happy with the fact all this has cost me about $140, God bless Ebay and my bits box. Still intend to weather the tanks, just havent gotten the process down.

Here is 1st Squad, attached to the Heavy Weapon Platoon and armed with the Heavy Bolter (I know there are no more Heavy Weapon Platoons, just doing it in my own little world here). The squad prides itself in mobility, even though it requires a great deal of amo hauling. The squad leader has an uncanny ability to predict the movements of light infantry. He will deploy his weapons directly on their axis of advance and decimate them as they approach. The squad leader has been known to taunt the enemy by gesturing for them to "come on".

That Squad Leader looks boss. Have you thought about drilling holes in the barrels of the HBs? It would add to their realism i think.

Thanks for the comment Scrazza, its slow going on this one.

Firstly, I am sure everyone out there is just as excited as I am for the Florida State victory yesterday. Now, my camera is really unreliable and I dont even know if I will be able to finish this project. What I do have is the first Chimera. I experimented wit weathering and damage. I think it looks pretty good for a first try. I got the 2nd Platoon missile squad done. Those 3 WIP guys are regimental advisors. The dude who looks like he is unrolling toilet paper will count as the astropath. I figure he is an intelligence guy who can give the CO real time dispositions of friendly and enemy forces. This allows the CO to place his reserves in the location where they can more easily and quickly respond. The auocannon squad turned out well, I think. I would love to say I came up with the mount idea, but I didn't. Guy named bigmek35 did on his guard blog, which looks promising. Thanks for looking, On to the pics.....

I like the one with the red beret, he looks like a gruff sort of commander, one who if he caught a soldier complaining of shell-shock or the like would probably summarily execute him for cowardice and heresy. That's the sort of discipline you need in the Imperial guard!
