I have gone for a fluffy, yet (hopefully) competative-ish Salamander army. It is mainly Infantry based, designed to get within 24" and blast away.

Traits:

Advantages:
Cleanse and Purify
Never Despair

Drawbacks:
Eye to Eye

HQ

Commander: Master w/ Terminator Armour, Dual Lightning Claws & Adamantine Mantle.
                165

Terminator Command Squad: Sergeant w/ Storm Bolter & Thunder Hammer. 4 Terminators w/ 2 Heavy Flamers & Power Fists, 2 Storm Bolters & Power Fists.
                250

Elites

Dreadnought: Assault Cannon, Dreadnought Close Combat Weapon & Heavy Flamer.
                115

Dreadnought: Assault Cannon, Dreadnought Close Combat Weapon & Heavy Flamer.
                115

Troops

Tactical Squad 1: Sergeant w/ Terminator Honours, Thunder Hammer & Bolt Pistol. 7 Marines w/ 2 Flamers. Rhino w/ Smoke Launchers & Extra Armour.
                239

Tactical Squad 2: Sergeant w/ Bolter. 5 Marines w/ Multi Melta & Plasma Gun.
                110

Tactical Squad 3: Sergeant w/ Bolter. 5 Marines w/ Multi Melta & Plasma Gun.
                110

Fast Attack

Assault Squad: Sergeant w/ Bolt Pistol, Close Combat Weapon & frag Grenades. 7 Marines w/ 5 Bolt Pistols, 5 Close Combat Weapons, 2 Flamers & Frag Grenades.
                196

Heavy Support

Devastator Squad: Sergeant w/ Bolter. 7 Marines w/ 4 Missile Launchers.
                200

42 Marines            1500
1 Rhino
2 Dreads

Well, what do you think? I know that assault Cannons on Termies are "uber", but I hate them. The rhino I know is going to die. Hopefully, I can get within 12" of the enemy (turn 1, 24" deployment) before it dies. I can then rapid-fire away the next turn. Termis deepstrike (I really should get Teleport Homers, but dunno where to get the points from). Assault Marines, Tac 1 and the 2 Dreads charge one flank, and I shoot up the other. Devastators are there for multi-role, and to aid in either Armour Busting, or anti-Horde duty.

I have taken Thunder Hammers over Power Fists as they are fluffy. Multi Meltas are for scare factor, and should be quite useful against armour.

So, your thoughts (this isn't really for tournamnet play, so I don't want a TOTALLY uber list, just something fun, whilst being able to actually do something)?

Ps, if this realy does suck, I have another army with same Troops choiuce. 1 Vindi, same Termies, Razorback chappie and Command, 3 Speeders (MM & HF). No assualt marines, no Devastators. Only 1 Dread Would that be better - will post if you think this list blows?

-drop the mantle, i know its for fluff but its 35 points and if your captain w/lc cant kill your in trouble anyway

-the hammer on the squad leader(term) is costing a lot of points, i would just call it a power maul(weapon), to save the points as you dont need that many fist(type) attacks

-i'm getting different points on the assault squad(188)

-drop the dev's, one big squad is to easy to avoid

with the points left over (273), try to add 2 speeders(just mm is best) and the vindi, then give dreads and vindi extra armor and vindi smoke launchers

its not as good with out POMS but with smokes it should be ok for a turn this drastically raises vehicle count to keep rhino alive and keeps your anti-tank around so something like this:

Master w/ Terminator Armour, Dual Lightning Claws
Terminator Command Squad: Sergeant, 4 Terminators w/ 2 Heavy Flamers

Dreadnought: Assault Cannon, Dreadnought Close Combat Weapon & Heavy Flamer, Extra armor

Dreadnought: Assault Cannon, Dreadnought Close Combat Weapon & Heavy Flamer, Extra armor

Tactical Squad 1: Sergeant w/ Terminator Honours, Thunder Hammer & Bolt Pistol. 7 Marines w/ 2 Flamers. Rhino w/ Smoke Launchers & Extra Armour.

Tactical Squad 2: Sergeant w/ Bolter. 5 Marines w/ Multi Melta & Plasma Gun.

Tactical Squad 3: Sergeant w/ Bolter. 5 Marines w/ Multi Melta & Plasma Gun.

Assault Squad: Sergeant w/ Bolt Pistol, Close Combat Weapon & frag Grenades. 7 Marines w/ 5 Bolt Pistols, 5 Close Combat Weapons, 2 Flamers & Frag Grenades.

Land Speeder w/multi-melta

Land Speeder w/multi-melta

Vindicator w/extra armor, smoke launchers

-this makes a pretty good list, your core is good and shaving off any excess points can round out your force well.

My ORIGINAL army list: (same traits)

HQ

Chapter Chaplain: Reclusiarch w/ Rosarius, Crozius Arcanum & Bolt Pistol.
                86

Command Squad: Sergeant w/ Terminator Honours, Bolt Pistol, Power Weapon & Teleport Homer. 4 Marines w/ 2 Meltaguns, 2 BP & CCWs. Razorback w/ Twin-Linked Heavy Bolters & Extra Armour.
                200

Elites

Dreadnought: Assault Cannon, Dreadnought CCW & Heavy Flamer.
                115

Terminator Squad: Sergeant w/ Storm Bolter & Thunder Hammer. 4 Terminators w/ 2 Heavy Flamers & Power Fists, 2 Storm Bolters & Power Fists.
                250

Troops

Tactical Squad 1: Sergeant w/ Terminator Honours, Thunder Hammer & Bolt Pistol. 7 Marines w/ 2 Flamera. Rhino w/ Smoke Launchers & Extra Armour.
                239

Tactical Squad 2: Sergeant w/ Bolter. 5 Marines w/ Multi Melta & Plasma Gun.
                110

Tactical Squad 3: Sergeant w/ Bolter. 5 Marines    w/ Multi Melta & Plasma Gun.
                110

Fast Attack

Land Speeder Squadron: 3 Land Speeder Tornados w/ 3 Multi Meltas & 3 Heavy Flamers.
                225

Heavy Support

Vindicator: Demolisher Cannon, Storm Bolter & Power of the Machine Spirit.
                155

                1490    10 left over.

What I was thinking of doing was tropping the Thunder Hammer on the Termie Sergeant, using the points to bolster the Squad 1 with 2 more Marines, then give the Dread a Multi Mleta, for fluff and to have 0 assault cannons (fairly unusual for Marines).

Same as before: Should I give the Dread a Multi Melta? This time, I have the Scouts to call in the Termie Command ACCURATELY. I have a habit of having expensive squads hitting things and dieing.

So, overall, which list do you rekon is better, and what improvements would you make (with keeping reasonably within Salamander fluff)

I like the latest list the most. Some suggestions:
-Drop the mantle. If you don't want to do this for fluff reasons, that's fine, fluff SHOULD override usefulness anways :-)
-Give the Dread extra armor so he can keep walking to the enemy when stunned
-Ditch the krak grenades on the scouts. They're hard to do much with. Instead use those points to beef up the Sergeant's power weapon to a Thunder Hammer ;-)... then you can really deal with vehicles (and fluff!)
-If you can, spilt the landspeeders into three separate squads (if not, I'm guessing Eye to Eye allows you to only have one fast attack...)
-Ditch the Heavy flamers on the speeders, or go with some other weapon combo; you'll hardly ever shoot both the multi-melta and the flamer at the same target to any effectiveness.
-Big fan of Vindicators. I'd give it smoke launchers b/c most of the time you need to use that first turn move to get into range.

I personally love to see thunderhammers on the tabletop; the look so nice on the leaders of squads and do a great job at striking fear into the hearts of enemies :-D

And God said unto Abraham, "Take this mighty bolter, my son, and smite thy enemies from afar. Fear not, Emperor protects..er, I mean, well, youknowwhatImean."

Well, the Kraks are ONLY on the Sergeant, as I had 2 points kicking over. So not enough for a hammer.

Yup, only 1 squad of Speeders. I took MM and HF so I can hit EITHER Tanks OR Infnatry HARD. These guys should be VERY anti-Marine - templates and meltas galore. And they can take the 2 fluffiest weapons...

Mantle - I took it as EVERYONE seems to carry a Power Fist these days. May drop it to get the Thunder Hammer.

Smokes - will see if I can get them. Probably a few points free if I get rid of that Mantle.

Well, I like your list it seems very fluffy and I really pity any Altaioc army you play, thats alot of flamers. . .

I think I am going to try out a couple multi-melta speeders next time I play a friend of mines, IG army. . .

Well, I think I have a fairly competative, non-cheesey army. I mean, how can ANYONE claim cheese when I have 1 elite, 1 Heavy Support and 1 Fast Attack? Not to mention NO assault cannons whatsoever?

cheers for all your help - if you have any more ideas, please stick them in here as well!
