Everything you have been told is a lie!

With that one sentence everything changed hobby wise. I felt liberated, inspired and energized. The Inquisitor rulebook changed the entire hobby for me. Dan Abnett's Eisenhorn trilogy followed - there was no escape anymore. Finally between the noble heros and darkest horros there was utter grey, humanity and total warhammer gothic. An intense labor of love was initiated and many warbands and inquisitors followed, culminating with Rosethorn Now, my own take on Eisenhorns status quo.

After trying the demons and deciding that it really wasn't for me. Or at least I don't need another one, I felt another wave of liberation. I could basically do what I please and study the subject matter and techniques in a manner that please me. I for example decided, that I like art where I sense feel and texture and vision more than the pursuit of technical perfection. More of this you can read of in my "Legion blog": http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/233990.page

A thought occurred, a three part study to that greyness and it's extents and extremes, and hopefully surprising results and selections. =I=munda, a game merging =I=nquisitorial narratives, roleplaying and Necromunda mechanics, was born and much much gaming fun was had. At Dakka a whole movement was born from our adventures after the Jade Vessel fame. Following those has been the best reward of any hobby project I've been involved with.

So started the trilogy. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

I started with the Ugly, represented here as part one of the trilogy. Called "Shaddes offe Greye" as nod of respect to Grand Master Blanche.

Twist Time

As the day before, and those before it, a deep, mustard hued mist hung around the endless rusty hacks of the east end. A huge bulky twist galloped towards the epicenter of this excuse of a Hive Sector. After him came two others, inhumanely thin, twisted even for twists sort of twists. And a Twist with a long pointy hat and no left arm. Then a group of four, or rather three carrying something that looked like a fourth.

Fething feth - where are they all going? He knew of course, but why? Gevlan cursed his deformed back that ached after the long stalk, and then slipped into the night, moving with stealth and swiftness totally unexpected of his appearance.

The old Theatrum was a huge, rotting carcass of armaplas and steel gridwork, punctured by a massive support structure of the hive above. There was something organic about the place, something that reminded Gevlan of Magidor Gamma, and the Endoskel Forests. What a campaign that had been.

He could see the dribble of twists feed the mammoth building through the gateways that appeared well guarded. He didn’t need them of course, he knew all the ways in and out, like he did everywhere within day march of the old barracks that he still considered his home, post... home.

Inside the sense of scale was disorienting. Particularly when surveyed from the western audit balcorium, full 70 yards higher than the floor beneath. The place was packed with twist. Gevlan made a passing snorting sound, that made for laughter, a place packed full of twists always made for twisted viewing. He started walking down the memory lane again, the Hubberian Twist wars ... a quick hush in the crowd brought him back to present with a pause a lone, skeletal figure appeared on stage, moving with other worldly grace. He was glad in gleaming black metallic armor and a long dark grey cape of nothingness hung from his gaunt shoulder guards to form a stark contrast to his pallid white, skull of a face. Teal pipes and tubes fluttered where his chin and ears should have been. Gevlan decided the skull face was the most twisted of the twists, even if he wasn’t really a twist.

A tiny twist with a head three times too big appeared behind the shadowy cape, seemingly adamant to gain certain distance from mr. Master Twist . Then Skullface spoke. Or Gevlan heard him speak, for there was no way to tell if his mouth was moving. Or if he had a mouth. It occurred to him he shouldn’t hear him anyway from the distance.

He was a master orator, as the total silence of the twist audience underlined. Gevlan could feel his heart beating as the message started to sink in. His beardy mouth started to form a smile, but that smile died on his lips and his heart missed a beat. A cold metal ring was pressed dead centre against his spine - dozens of simultanious thoughts jarred his brain - a Thor, or Mars Pattern assault shotgun, or possibly a compact boltgun; how did someone, something ambush the scout chief like this, who had a piece like that in the twist lands... After what felt like all of his utterly dull last week, with his nightmares imposed on, he could feel the pressure lighten, then detach. Gevlan turned slowly, keeping his lascarbin pointed on the floor. The twist looked bad. Tall with sinewy muscularity, grey skin with pointy metal dispensers poking out and a crudely painted white face - Gevlan couldn’t tell in the loom, but it looked like the feth had stiched his mouth shut with something thick and caked in crimson. And the Thrice Damned Feth wore yellow rain boots. This was death incarnate. In yellow boots.

A Second figure peeked from the door of the shadowy balcorium, she was a goddes - and announced matter of factly that the boss wants a word. Gevlanhad a pretty good idea who that Boss might be. He slowly made for the door, somewhat comforted by the presence of the young lady and the fact they let him keep all of his weapons. Passing the door he dared a quick glance at the lady again, but to his horror this side of her face was a lump of burned scar tissue, and a sickly yellow lidless eye that emitted light and made the scar tissue glow horridly in a mustard hue.

Since I've started toying with

The Good / a beati like being of pure light and painting techniques derived from Orthodox Catholic Icons. A henchmen church of Not sanely devoted followers of utter resolution.

and

The bad / a witch too powerful, the dark of terra. Just and magnificient, the mightiest about to fall the most. Iconically inquisitorial, with the weapons of the warp.

and alas, all three Inquisitors sworn enemies of dogma, motivation and process, of each others and the imperium the others represent.

Around these retinues, individual models will be created. Tangents, offsprings, allies, enemies... Rogue Traders, Mechanicum Priests...

A few WIP shots exist, of what might or might not be the beginnings of these two parts to the trilogy.

Beautiful modelling brilliant story. Can't wait to see where they go from here....

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Quoted for truth.

There is an attitude that not having an insanely optimized, one shot, six stage, omnidirectional, inevitable, mousetrap of an assassin list army somehow means that you have foolishly wasted your life building 500 points of pure, 24 karat, hand rolled, fine, cuban fail. That attitude has been shown, under laboratory conditions, to cause cancer of the fun gland.

Migs, as an... innovator of =I=, I'm looking forward to this like the birth of my own child. (*ahem*... none yet, and none on the way, to be clear)

I sat and read through 40+ pages of your Legions thread to find the =I= stuff, and as a second continuation... this is almost as good, if not better, than Black Library's Eisenhorn/Ravenor continuations.

P.S. This contest has spurred my comrades again. We're resurrecting our Promethean Hammer. And I've already got the second chapter (with a new Inq for me, either Batman or Full Metal Alchemist-styled) set in motion.

Red Storm Rising

I traveled in the rotten carcass of a long dead elevatorum engine. All 244 floors of the derelict hab block flashing through where the doors of it once were. Glorious wave of sparks shot down after the engine like an afterburner. I like to make an entrance, that is why. Slight psy frost begun to cover the engine, a side effect of my telekinesis.

I knew what awaited me at the top. Because I was there as I am here. I willed the murdermake, or rather directed the absolute onslaught. I tasted the blood and watched every single one of them die.

A beautiful mechanical chime announced my arrival and I walked in to the main hall. The smell of blood was quite intoxicating through two separate noses. The cohort of witches surrounded my price, tightly packed behind a wall of vortex brought alive through their dark sorcery. My Alter-Daemon paced around the warp barrier. Such brilliant tool, such a cost to acquire it.

He cost me, it cost me. It cost me in resources and in the trust of much of the Ordos, narrow minded as they were, are, in the face of new, groundbreaking weaponry. Ignorantly labeled as a Daemon Host. They do not understand the forging of an Alter, of the genetic link and chain of control I project on the beast. It cost me much of my war-band, great warriors all of them. Oh yes, it also cost some dozens of collateral lives before I full mastered it. It cost me most of all.

But such a daemon. A bargain.

I burned through the feeble wall. They were powerful psykers, but not close to what power I posses, not close to the training they gave me, and I made their hearts explode. Not taking any chances, too eager to start.

I entered his mind, he and I blinked.

And I saw through his eyes. Through his eye to be exact. Into my eyes. I felt his terror, but it was overpowered by intellectual thirst. It was sublime. Such a clear and purposeful mind. The Mirrormaster, Lord Seer, Hereticus Diabolicus, sector threat three. There was I, cowled in ethereal alien robe. Cream in color, projecting the symbols of my trade on its surface. Encased in crimson carapace, wrought by master artificers to protect from harm and to provoke dread in equal measure; and to integrate the incredible psychic hood from Titan. A compact seismic hammer in hand and the vampire blade sleeping its endless nightmares in its protective alloy scarab. Another special piece made in the forgeries of Titan when such places would still cater for me.

I felt them before hearing them, before seeing them through his one eye.

Nevvie & Chaide set down besides me. Their huge, impossibly complex, synthetic wings a whirl that ultimately suspended them a few feet from ground. I was to make a job offer. Chaide carried the reward I would promise. Nevvie the tools for signing.

I blinked back with an understanding.

Lets begin.

Very interesting write-up migs. I'm not too familiar with the inquisitors so there's a lot of mental piecing together that I've got to do to stay with the story... but I can keep up with no problems. Onward!

Painting the =I=, designing the retinue...

I've finished painting the red armor, and face. Red is a total daemon to photograph though I'm very happy how it came out though. Used Jakob's yellow base color method for a very strong, noble red, but will take it more to my style with careful chipping and gore stains, and exaggerated shadows when all the other colors are in place and I can sense the overall tone of light and shadow.

I gave him piercing red eyes, with red base coat, dark "eyeliner and a glowing tiny droplet of white in the middle - courtesy of a 20 0 brush I got from Northen who is studying in Kyoto.

Now on to metals and the robes. I can't wait to get everything up to when weathering starts. That's when the plastic man comes to life for me!!

Lets see if I can finish him on time. The painting is becoming a testing ground and I feel I can push him somewhere un expected.

Very nice band of misfits you have there my friend. Golum at the front is a little out of place but I really like the Inquisitor and 'Ghost'.

The inquisitor has given me a little big of inspiration for a command unit for my pipe-dream traitor army and I've saved him in to my 'inspirational' images folder.

Ghost has a really nice feel. Makes me think of a cross between Ezrah from the Ghosts novels and some of the more tribal bandits in borderlands.

Looks like your second group is comming along very nicely aswell.

Keep it up mate, brilliant work.

Here's a PIP of him - don't know why, but it was impossible to get pics of the red that I am so pleased about (its deep and has simiar range to legion blue, without looking orange, now it looks orange and screaming bright) . Hence I'll ignore everyone's disliking it . Treat this as proof of me painting and better pics later when I have more to show.
