Ok then, Here we go: I am starting work on a Reaver titan I got second hand. The guy that I bought it from was a new father and since the baby and the titan were approximately the same size, it seemed reasonable to take the titan out of the stroller, and put the baby in. it came to me in the original bags, shipped inside a diaper box. It had never been painted or assembled, so I really got a steal on the price. Especially since it came with the Titan close combat arm, missile launcher, and melta gun.

Now, how to paint it?

After looking online, I decided that the standard blue/yellow that everyone seems to paint theirs was definately not for me. I don't know enough about titans to recognize the history behind the colour scheme (I generally play tau in apocalypse games, as railguns come in handy) so I came up with a colour scheme to suit my tastes. I decided on a dark green armor (British Green from Tamiya Color), with bleached bone or similar highlights and dwarf bronze trim. My girlfriend laughingly told me it would look like a leprechaun (obviously she believes her eldar are superior), and the name stuck. Leprechaunis Rex has been commissioned for the emperors service, and I could definately use any insight on how to get this project done.

Question #1: Detailed work I have noticed that most titans have large amounts of "blank" space on them. Specifically, their shin guards, torso and shoulder plates seem to be painted a flat colour, with no inspiring paintjobs. Is this because it will make the model look too "busy", or just because it is easier not to spend the time?

Question #2: Pinning and Painting I have been thinking that it might be better if i painted the entire model piece by piece, and then assembled and pinned once everything was done. this way I could be sure to get the entire model painted, instead of fiddling with a brush in nooks and hard to reach areas. Does this sound reasonable? I found an amazing looking website on assembling, <ref=http://www.theinnergeek.net/2008/08/reaver-titan-pt-1.html</a> but I don't know any articles on painting techniques or pinning.

Anyway, I am trying to paint a single piece every day (prime, paint, and finish), although it is proving difficult do restrain myself to doing just one.

Please leave any and all comments you have: any ideas are welcome!

This will be the most GLORIOUS leprechaun of all.

Should make a giant shamrock that you can attach/detach for those important battles.

For Question 2, if you're going to paint the inside, maybe make some way of the roof being detachable, so people can see inside it and admire it better.

Those feet are looking great!

I would suggest highlighting the edges with Dark Angels green or another lighter shade of green for that extra detail.

Thanks for the responses! It has really helped me make a push on some of the pieces I have been painting. Without further ado, here is my progress

My other models are just realizing how truely massive this titan will be, and seem to be giving it a wide bearth. The girlfriends eldar seem to be quite nervous: there is talk of them bringing in a reverant titan sometime in the near future to compete. I also found out that the local games shop (which I have never actually played at) doesn't allow Reavers due to them being "impossible to kill" except by other reavers. Oh well, It is still going to be awesome!

[Thumb - lepfeet (2).jpg]
Got both feet done. I still havn't highlighted them as per Iranna's note (great idea, just no time to do so yet)

[Thumb - IMAG0029.jpg]
And a shin is done. Again, heavy badab black and gryphonne sephia washes over dark angels green, boltgun metal and dwarf bronze.

[Thumb - leplegs2.jpg]
But wait, whats better than having one shin done? Two shins!

Ok, its been a few days, and I did a lot of painting to avoid prepping for my exams this week. Since I can't seem to figure out how to post pictures in my blog (just at the end with captions), you lovely folks will have to skim my speal before you get to the juicy pictures .
I am hopefully going to do one more post this week, although I doubt I will be able to since I have exams Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Saturday morning I am off on a quick vacation to the East Coast of Canada, to visit relitives and relax for a bit. Obviously I will be doing some painting there, but I sincerely doubt I will post my Reaver progress until around the last weekend of August.
That being said, there may be another juicy tidbit for anyone who notices: the majority of my space marines are on the East Coast, and I just might have access to a nice camera

Without further ado, the pics, and enjoy!!!!

This is looking really good and the green and gold works really well. I certainly agree with 40K Ninja - use magnets, especially for the weapons, that way, if you ever get any more they will be easy to swap round, although I guess you'll need quite big magnets (8-10mm diameter?) I've used the 3mm diameter ones on my latest dreadnought to great effect. Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing it complete.

Thanks for all the encouragement! I will definately be using magnets. I saw a utube video of a reaver magnetized, and the idea is to pin the torso to the legs and the head to the body. Ideally I will use bolts to hold the upper arms to the shoulders, and magnetize the arms at the elbows. This is because all the arms are interchangable up to the elbows, with the exception of the titan fist. Id like to magnetize the carapace onto the back, and the top of the head to the bottom, but im not sure how that will work. I will also magnetize the 4 void shields on its back, so i can take them off as they are destroyed.
Still trying to figure out how I am going to be carrying this sucker

I know its not the weekend yet, but I think I have hit a rut, and im not sure how to go about the next few steps
In nearly every titan picture I have seen, they are all standing upright on equally spaced, level feet. Not wanting to follow trends, I have decided to have Leprechanus Rex "squashing" either a tank or a defiler. This will lead to a nice scenic base. I like the idea of a defiler for the "defiling my gold" and "squashed like a bug" aspects, but a tank with a couple of corrupted gardsmen or chaos marines being squeezed out like toothpaste would also be cool.
Anyway, my problem is that I obviously dont have the base built yet, so the legs cant be assembled. this leads to complications all the way from the ankle joints to the waistline, where tubes and cables must be connected into holes and sockets.
Do I build a rough base out of plasticard, cardboard and styrofoam to sit the legs on, and connect all but the toes together, and then build a scenic base after the piece is done? I could start on the scenic base right away, which would allow me to figure out the toe joints, but would obviously be more complicated and take more time. I plan on magnetizing the feet to the base, allowing me to change between a scenic base and one for tournament play.

on a seperate note, here is some progress: I got in last night, and painted while playing my weekly game of Deathwatch over the internet.

If you're magnetising everything so you can change the position of the legs/feet for display/gaming purposes I'd start from the bottom and work my way up. Whilst the idea of crushing something like a defiler is good, I would think crushing a tank would be easier to build and would probably enable you to give the titan more stability when displayed.

I was going to magnetize the base of the feet to the stand. It makes sense to work my way up, but I was hoping there would be a better way

Not sure - I've never built anything this big before! Not sure either how much the model weighs, but just make sure the magnets are big and man enough to do the job. As mentioned before, I would guess you'll need ones about 8-10mm diameter. Those little neodymium/rare earth magnets you can get are pretty strong.

Hi all! Somethings a foot in my reaver blog. Well, two feet actually. I still have to do some fine detail work on the pistons on the knees, toes, and hips, but other then that, it looks pretty good.
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS put the toes together before putting on the armor plates on the shins. As I found out, having the armor plates in place makes it impossible to glue the top of the toe pistons into place. Also, as I found out there are actually 4 different pieces of shin armor: two with big gaps in the side and two for the small gaps. the big gaps go on the inside, so if you get it mixed up (again, as I did) things get messy

I am looking at a defilier (which i can get second hand), although the block underfoot is the size of a rhino. I feel like using a defilier would be cool, but a crushed rhino with smooshed khorne bezerkers would be entertaining.
