I've been reading up the Lion's Coup and Vinter. First, outside of NQ #7 and the rules found within---is there any other coup dense source material I should read?
Second--is it me or would Cygnar be in a better position if Vinter was still in charge? Leto is a pretty weak ruler--and while Vinter was somewhat ruthless, at least he was decisive. In the current fluff, Leto is running Cygnar into the ground--and they seem to be the 'who gets to beat up on his next' plot element in the books.

This is all based upon my reading of what little fluff I have access to and my studies of military history.
Honestly Cygnar could have been ran into the ground by either leader, Vinter is the decisive leader of Cygnar, but the popular opinion of the kingdom seems to put him into a negative perspective, if not Leto who would have aken control after a bloodier Civil War.

The true answer is neither. The true king is Julius, an once Magnus trains him up him a bit more, the rest of Cygnar shall come to see that.

@Ages
the Cygnar fluff from the MKI book has a good chunk of it dedicated to the coup if I'm not mistaken

It won't matter who is in charge of Cygnar. Cygnar has the unfortunate luck of being the least evil of the WM factions and therefore is seen as the "good guys" who are fighting on all fronts. It doesn't matter whose leading them or who they are/aren't at war with somebody will be attacking them.

There is a great pre coup story in the 10th anniversary NQ. Kind of illustrates how ruthless Vinter can be and also Magnus' begining to rise in rank.

Thanks for the references, both were good reads. I think pre-coup Vinter force here I come.

I have long had plans of using the Iron Kingdoms Vinter model as eStryker for a pre-Coup force.
But with the progress of the story, with the loyalty of the 4th army in question, it could even be a current force.

I actually found the Lion's Coup rules for Vinter--only issue with using him as a caster was that he wasn't (From my reading so far anyways). The rules I have just make him a (very) nasty solo beat stick.

Yeah, I knew about those rules, but they were put together in MkI.
There were also rules from the Press Ganger invitational where they had alternate timeline rules, such as Mercenary Stryker.
I believe they had a Vinter Caster for that, also.
But all Press Gangers have been forbidden to share that info with us. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, it just doesn't feel right that the King of a nation would not be the leader of his own army.
Maybe change it up so that he is the auto-win condition rather than the caster he is with.

Arggh, I would love to see the rules from the Invitational.
I agree about the auto-win condition--and honestly outside of my group I'll never get to use him (It will just be a plan mercenary army--I can't even find a counts as rule for him in that) Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok, looking at building now--this is what I have for a Pre-Lion Coup Cygnar force;
Magnus
---Mule
---Nomad
---2 x Renegade
10 x Long Gunners
6 BoomHowler and Company
6 Steelheads (Will be Cygnar City Guard)
10 Steelheads (Will be Cygnar City Guard)
Gorman
Orin Midwinter, Inquisitor
Vinter will be using his rules and an associated point cost just as an in house/non tournament---and that's a T4 Magnus list. From reading it looks like all my Jacks were Cygnar pre-Lions Coup. Gunners are Vinter loyalist, Boomhowler and Trolls were still around--Cygnar City Guard = Loyalist, Midwinter is an Inquisitor.....don't know if Gorman belongs though.
I would like to base it on the actual siege--which was held in the palace/castle. So what bases?
