So... who actually wants a 6th edition at this time?

With the rumours about it coming next year, I wonder who here is actually looking forward to it? With so many armies stuck one or more editions behind, how could it possibly benefit the game to introduce another edition at this point? This thread is just a general question as to whether there are any gamers out there who are looking forward to the new edition, and why?

I personally think its a terrible idea. I love the fact that Flames is still only on its second edition and remains intent on covering all its bases theatre-wise. Im not pretending that 40k could be as balanced or competitive as that system, other historicals, or from what I hear even the PP systems, but surely having a level playing field would make the game closer to an unbroken one. I hate wound allocation too, but I'd rather that than have such a staggered codex lineup.

Thoughts?

Only thing I'd bother changing is trying to less incentivize Rhino rush by actually giving a bonus to foot troops. I still want my Mechdar, though.

I only want it if:

They make vehicles less advantageous to take.

The way things have been going.... its been a steady progression from soldier focus to vehcile focus.... next edition will probably penalize for NOT having vehicles.

Everything is "tank only" these days. Where are the days of foot troops? Also, the rumors of 6th make it look to be more involved and strategic. Modifications on shooting? Yes please. Multiple save options for characters? This was SORELY needed. Parking lots not being as good? Thank God, IG lots are boring and easy to beat. Maybe I'll actually start USING flamers in this edition. I say bring it on-if it's like 8th edition fantasy, I'll be largely happy. I know not everybody was happy about that, but I was. Maybe it'll bring balanced codexes for 6th, like 8th edition fantasy has. O&G, TK and OK are all balanced, and I'm sure the next book will be too.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I don't really have a say in the matter, so I figure I might as well enjoy it. I'm a Highlander fan, and we tend to be good at enjoying the positive aspects of our geekery while turning a stupefyingly blind eye to the bad parts. Once you've mentally supressed the planet Zeist, a few bad rules no longer present a challenge.

In all seriousness, I'm excited. Each new edition brings it's own new challenges and opportunities. And since I primarily play Space Marines, I'm pretty much guaranteed to get my Codex first (or near to it.)

Stick with the current rules and only adapt major flaws.

Update the Codexes so they're all even only changing things that won't make things redundant I think the Orks are very balanced as are the Nids mabye give them a few more options. DE are balanced. BA can be nasty. GK need to be more points in some cases IE Purifiers.

All the non 5th Dexs should be updated then we just stay like that and get more Battle missions to always change things around and just add models in.

Thats in an Ideal world.

Thats what I mean, the game is only really "broken" because the dexes are so far behind. Fix that and the game would be far more balanced.

Though, some of the things timetowaste85 are saying sound pretty tasty. I still believe everything should be bought up to speed first.

I have yet to have a game with 5th, not really a gamer. I prefer to paint and build stuff. However if they fix the crap defensive ST4 nonsence on tanks that would help, Bring it back so HB are defensive.

Plus tanks have become stationary boxes in 5th. I want them to be able to zip around shooting at stuff with everything, maybe with a -1 to BS skill for moving etc.

I have no desire for a 6th edition until Tau are updated and Necrons are released. If it does come out in 2012... I hope its Dec 31 2012.

Of all the editions so far, I really do feel that 5th edition is the best.

As someone who’s been around since third edition, 5th edition has definitely been the least enjoyable for me. The insane power creep (thanks to Mr Ward) and the mech nature has made list building too restrictive. Anyway here are my two cents:

• Vehicle damage table altered to make vehicles more fragile (essentially changing transports from an auto take to a risk vs reward upgrade).
• Complete overhaul of assault phase rules (including fixing wound allocation).
• Tweaking of VP/KP system.
• Inclusion small scale/kill team/skirmish rules in the rule book.
• Extensive errata for newer and older codices to level the playing field (i.e. restore balance).
• Tweaking eternal warrior rules to compensate for the current abuse of “remove from table” rules.

I am ready for the 6th if that would mean less focus on vehicles. But I would sacrifice that if only the older codexes got updates first, or at the same time.

Less reliance on vehicles please! The only ones I like are the DE ones (which probably wouldn't go anywhere anyway. But I like those so that's good!)

I think the DMG chart for tanks should bring back vehicle wrecked on a 6 with a glancing hit. OR make it immobilized AND weapon destroyed. something to really hurt it.

that way mech gets a knock down.

Im more interested in the direction they are going to take 6th and 40k rather then actually wanting it per se.

GW wants to make money from another edition release so what angle of the game is it going to target?
5th was "vehicles are king" so they made a killing on that with every army getting a plethora of rather expensive vehicles. Sure you could run without them but most of us didnt (?)
I recall Nurglitch(?) saying ages ago they might go for a big scenery rules angle, where you could spend points on bunkers etc or specific pieces of scenery that gave bonues/threats (ala Fantasy 8th). With FW openly stating they are reworking their entire range this seems plausable. I also think (shockingly) at the moment the GW scenery kits are extremely good value, will they move to milk this even more?

Will they go F8th and make troops the king again? Where having 5-6 tactical squads is the norm. 100+ boys in an average army?
Will they change the FoC rules? Now you must have at least 1 heavy or at least 2 elites to start a game. That would certainly shift units like LRs, Trygons, Killakans etc.

Magic in 8th made a really huge comeback, will they go back down a psychic heavy route ala 2nd edition with a suppliment release for Psykers?

Whats their angle going to be both in terms of gameplay and shifting units?

Things that I'd like changed in 6th ed

1. Better Clarification on Saving rolls on vehicles.
2. Less chance of missing a vehicle at point blank range.
3. Wound allocation needs to be fairer cant think how though.
4. AP to modify saving rolls like in warhammer

A not too distant future, Somewhere in time and space...

All codices should be updated to 5th Edition first.

Some armies really, really, really need a boost. Really.
Necrons, Sisters of Battle, Tau...

Then 6th Edition could be made. I, for one, would be interested to see what they do.

Setting aside my earlier comments...

I'd like 6e soon if it offered either incentives to play my infantry on foot or drawbacks to just sticking things in transports and leaving them there for the whole game. I don't want vehicles to be useless, but I also don't want to feel like I'm not playing my army to the fullest if I'm not sticking all my MEQ in Rhinos or Razorbacks. I don't like feeling shoehorned into a particular playstyle by the meta-game. I know I play at home, and only friendly games, so I don't strictly have to mechanize my MEQ because I won't face random opponents with more optimized lists, but when I go on the Internet to look up tactical and strategic advice, a recurring theme is transports for every squad that can take them, and reasons that some particular units are recommended against taking, often include their lack of a transport option - Repentia, notably, though I'll admit they have other flaws. And of course, when taking playstyle into consideration, there's the army's way of fighting coming into consideration, which obviously restricts what can be done with them - so I wouldn't go about wanting to make a Tau force geared up for close combat.

But all I basically want out of it is more balance between infantry on foot and mechanized infantry, to the point where either is a viable option and which you choose comes down to a personal preference of playstyle. Maybe 40k isn't the best game for me if that's what I want, but meh, I like the game and it's already well-established in my home, so I'll just avoid mechanized infantry at home if possible. ^_^

No, this would be a poor idea. It would emphasize quantity of the vehicles vs quality. Armies which use small amount of expensive but capable vehicles would suffer.

What is needed is not a rule change, but codex design change. When 5th Edition started, GW dropped basic transport prices down big time. This was a mistake. Things like Razorbacks, Rhinos and Chimeras are just too damn cheap. You don't see too many Dark Angels Razorspam lists out there, do you?

For me this speaks volumes. 3rd ed was the one I despised most. ASM went out the window something I think reintroducing would begin to reassert balance, tanks became useless but transports were nifty and it seemed written with getting into CC asap. It was the edition which had me drop all my 40k armies by selling/giving them away.
You have some good points as this edition certainly isn't perfect. Wound allocation makes for bogging the game down and in many players eyes legal cheating, vehicle rules it would be nice to see a balance there.
The most important part though is the errata, as with a few updates now and then each army can be balanced over time and adjusted "on the fly" so to speak.

IMHO, each edition after 3rd has been a vast improvement over the previous edition, but 5th edition is by no means perfect.
