Basic back story on me...started playing 40k as Imperial Guard with a friend back in middleschool (7th-8th grade? It's been a while...9 or 10 years now). Unfortunately, I moved after that, and couldn't find anyone in my new town to play with, so I fell out of interest.

Stumbled onto Dakka somehow, and now my interest has been renewed. I'm planning on getting back into 40k, initially with Space Marines, mainly because I don't have any of my old paints or brushes, and, as opposed to IG, it looks like I could put together a 500-1,000 point list for a lot less upfront investment. Plus, an army of 50-75 tops is a LOT easier to paint than 3x 30-man squads of Catachans. Plus tanks. Yup, that's when I played last

That said, I know 40k is an investment, and best done as an organic process, slowly adding as you can and when you notice tactical deficiencies. I've seen a bunch of GORGEOUS armies here, and while I'm not expecting to paint like Michaelangelo...with a smaller number of models, I think I can push myself to pay more attention, and paint better.

I'm planning on re-acquainting myself with painting with one or two squads of space marines (5-10 man squads)...as well as the vanilla SM codex, to start.

I figure by the time I have kinda have re-learned the basics of painting, and can paint better than a 5-year old, I should have some money saved up to expand into something else new.

I've been lurking on Dakka for about 2 weeks, and what I've seen from my small sample, (FINGERS CROSSED), I might be able to pick up a bit from the painting forums (shooting for painting skills > 12 year old level ) as well as tactics to hopefully help me narrow down the options between the specialist SM armies.

That's my spiel...any and all advice regarding SM would be greatly appreciated. As I said, I'm planning on starting off with a squad or two of Space Marines...if there are any specific paint colors/brands that I'll inevitably end up using (boltgun metal, I'm assuming, for example), I'd greatly appreciate the input.

I too had a major break from middle school to adulthood. I kept up the playing, but I didn't touch a paintbrush or buy a new model for close to a decade. It's actually much easier to do a decent paintjob than you'd think. Take your time, read some advice, watch some how-to videos and you'll shock yourself with the end result.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. As of now, I have one 5-man squad, one 10-man squad, and a pair of landspeeders (maybe not tiptop shape, but 2x for 20 bucks shipped, I figured I could learn to love 'em). All from ebay. Next stage is getting the codex, and doing some reading, to decide on which flavor or SM to go with. Figure I'll do that before I buy any paints
