As I've been looking to expand my army I regularly look at the swap shop and ebay. I'm a bit shocked by the prices people ask for used models! So a couple of things: I don't want to get into a debate about supporting the FLGS. Assuming you are buying from the swap shop, then you're cool with buying second hand and that doesn't support your FLGS, so you might as well consider all of the other options including online discounters.

I regularly see people selling used models for 30% off MSRP on swap shop. Sometimes they give a bigger discount but only if you buy a large bulk of models that probably contains some that you don't really need, and therefore a lot of the extra discount is lost to needless waste. Considering you can get new models for 25% off online, I don't think 30% off for used is really a good deal. Personally, I'd pay that extra 5% and get new ones.

I guess I'm wondering two things:
1) Do people really have success reselling models at 30% off? It seems like most of those swap shop threads just get bumped over and over which leads me to think that they never sell.

2) Do you think that 30% off retail for used models (assembled and painted to a low standard that you will probably want to strip and repaint) is a good deal?

No, not when you can buy it new, for 20-25% off retail from some online shops.

Some people have very odd ideas of what is and is not a fair price for a mini that they've thoroughly abused with their so called skills in the painting department and then decided to flog on.

I've wondered this myself. I'd NEVER pay more than 50% for MSRP for a pre-painted model... and even then I probably wouldn't bother, because the $10-15 I'd save would just be spent in my time stripping and re-painting the model.

I work full time, I consider my time valuable.... $10 savings for 3-4 hours of work making a model ready to prime isn't worth it.

I've sold models on ebay, and generally they only got 50% of what they were worth... sold 2 guard armored companies, only got like $450 for it (3 baneblades, 6 russes, 6 chimeras). Still, it was poorly painted, so I didn't expect much more. Most of these sellers don't understand that, and charge stupid high prices.

Through the looking glass

This is how I've always bought and sold.

Metal models fetch 75%+ or msrp. I mean come on, it takes an hour in acetone and a swift brushing to make it brand new again (unless the model is damaged)

Plastic starts off at 50%
Damaged/missing pieces models can take off and additional 5-20%
I'll never pay more than 30% msrp for models with plastic glue.

Unless I wanted to by a whole army at once, I don't care about the paintjob. It's all getting stripped anyways so I can put my paintjob on em.

What online shops? Surely not the bs "discount" that amazon gives?

I'm curious abnout how to price stuff myself. I have a ton of orks I want to get rid of but theyre all still on the sprues.

out of all my stuff I only completed a Big Mek and almost completed 2 killa kans and a deffdred.

I still have:

Warboss
2x Mega Nobs
5x Noz
12x AoBR Nobz
3x boxes of lookta/burnas
2x trukks
Battlewagon
Chimera
6x AoBR Deffkoptas
Box of Ork Boyz
40x AoBR Orks
Box of Gretchin
Stompa
And a whole cigar box packed full of bitz.

All together, using the prices of GW and the Warstore it comes out to about $700.
After cutting 20% it's like $560.

Selling it all as one would be great but I think it'd be tough waiting aund for someone who wants an ork army.
If I sold it all individually it would take forever. I want Necrons NOW!!!

Those two are great, along with miniaturemarket

I'm confused because you said you used prices from GW and Warstore, but Warstore is 20% cheaper than GW. Is the 20% that your reduced it by off of GW prices or warstore prices?

Do I sense a little attitude? I believe Maelstrom games caters to the UK customers, but I have not done any research on that myself, as I primarily order from stores in my country.

Availability and prices are going to differ around the globe. I've written my posts and developed my opinions as a consumer in the USA and they should be taken as such. I'm not claiming Aussie consumers can get GW at 50% off MSRP easily. Lets move on.

It depends on the paint job.

If its really crummy, I won't pay more then 50% of retail.

If its a good paint job or unpainted, I may be willing to pay closer to the original price. Like unpainted, but assembled models, I would pay 70-80% of the original. its a case by case basis mostly.

If you get something thats NiB or opened, but still on the sprue and its complete I would be willing to pay up to 70% of the original.

Oh sorry, the costs I went with were the GW prices on all the "normal stuff" and Warstore for the AoBR stuff.

I figured I'd try to get rid of it all at one for like $500 but I can't yet as per the Swap Shop rules.
I have to get pictures and everything ready first. I also want to get rid of dark elves but they're painted.
Pretty well but people may not like the theme.

I tend to sell my armies for 3x-5x MSRP actually, with no effort. But they are nicely painted, which goes to show what some effort can gain you

Discount sites for the UK are Wayland Games and Maelstrom.
I have used both, and they're fine. Price them against each other before buying, though.
There's also Dark Sphere (?) in London, but I've not bought from there yet.

30% off may work if the models are still on sprues. If they are metal, that price point may also be acceptable, as long as they are not too torn up. I personally would just pay the 5% extra and buy new. 60% of MSRP is the highest I'll ever consider from a private seller, and they'd have to be basically NIB.

Hey DeffDred,

I'm probably not a potential buyer, and I'm a bit of a bargain hunter also, so take that for what it is worth. You might get someone who thinks your offer is a great deal, but imo if you are including items like 5x Nobz (regular nobz box I'm assuming?), 3x boxes of lookta/burnas, 2x trukks, Battlewagon, Chimera, Box of Ork Boyz, Box of Gretchin, Stompa and you are only going 20% less than GW prices, then you are pricing too high. I can get all of that stuff at 25% off brand new in box with free shipping. That's just my .02 and I hope that didn't come across harsh. I'm just trying to give you a little feedback since it seemed like you were looking for opinions. Good luck!

Edit: considering they are still on sprues, you might find someone to jump on a 20% off deal if they don't know about the discount online retailers we mentioned earlier, or maybe an international buyer that can't find a source of low prices like we have in the USA

I think so. Though it would be nice to get -30%rrp in the UK. I think Maelstrom is more like 10% on GW stuff.

Yeah prices for badly painted GW models can be a bit silly on ebay.

Well, considering that Aussies pay something like 200% MSRP locally, they would gladly jump on 20% off US MSRP.

And the best part about badly painted GW models on eBay is that they are all listed as "pro painted".

Well, lets be fair to GW. the high Australian prices are because of Tarrifs and aren't caused by GW.

That's bogus. I'm sure Australian tariffs are plenty high, but they are not 100%. And it doesn't explain why they charge the same overage on things like EBOOKS. So what, Aussies charge tariffs on the internet, too?

In regards to the thread topic, I think that the important thing to get from the Australia discussion is that you might be able to resell used models at a higher price if you are willing to ship internationally. I also note that decently painted (true decent painted, not a 3 year old's paint job marked as pro, but a true decent table top quality) models may fetch higher prices from some buyers. I prefer to try to paint my own, but someone might find the painted models worth a higher price. Otherwise I think that from a USA buyers standpoint, I'd never pay over 40% off GW Price for used models.
