I dunno, Sisters would come first if you ask me. Unless those Tau have an Etheral or something.

Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it.

Clearly trolling. 2 of the top 3, 2 of the bottom 3 and one from the middle looks like.

IG and SW are doing great because they have good units cheap units.

Totally. Vehicles are just so weak right now. And, transports are basically all unplayable.

IMO, the best army at the moment is the all Penal Legion army for IG. Nothing can stop an entire army that scouts.

Tau is insane when played well, I assure you. Check out Stelek or Kirby, and you will be enlightened. They just have a steep learning curve.

Orks are also quite competitive, but they're extremely luck based (more so than any other army) so I didn't include them.

Why? Looking to buy a new army? or just trying to troll? The reason I ask is that it seems everyone who ever asks this has one thing on their mind: competetiveness. And almost every discussion you have started is about just that.

Best army in imo if you wanna have fun is this:(I do bring this to local tourneys...at least ones that no one knows who i am for the lulz)

Company command; bareboned 50

Platoon command with chenkov 80

X5 fully loaded conscripts(250 models in 50 man groups) with "Send in the next wave" 1375

total 1505pts of annoying wave after wave....I win from players not being able to kill enuff of them. In CC these can be still nasty. plus with chenvok I can bring back 100 fully healed groups...If you have the models try this list for pure fun.

Dude, Tau are definitely the top tier army at the moment. By being so poor at close combat, they actually have a pretty significant edge, which is their inability to be locked in multi-turn assaults. Trying to keep a tau unit in assault is like trying to eat soup with a fork. Also, you never have to worry about assaulting enemy units because it's never a good idea, really letting you focus on trying to make the most of the only unit in the codex that can contribute to a victory.

Also, what's incredible about the tau is how many different versatile units they have. Vespids really come in handy as a speed bump. Kroot are really good at being speed bumps. Drone squads are really amazing at being speed bumps. Fire Warriors are fantastic at drawing fire by merit of their being so easy to kill, and in a pinch, they make a great speed bump.

Really though, it's the HQ choices that make the codex so competitive, the etheral is just a powerhouse, so remarkably effective that he actually improves your army by dying, maybe.

Soon to add

On a boat, Trying not to die.

It doesn't matter what army you play, it matters how you play it. No army in 40k is "Point and Click".

I've crushed opponents with 3rd Edition pure GK, and with Thunderwolves. All that matters is how well you can play them.

I do understand that about 40k, but i just got back it to it about a month or 2 ago and trying to get a better understanding of how the meta game is right now and be able to compare my performance to what you guys are saying. i play a standered mech guard army(http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/405013.page) any just trying to get better. i played a grey knights army the other night and had a draw and was just trying to figure out what was up with the different armys competativness

I'm not sure on the order, but I am not disputing the army choices for top tier armies.

GK, SW, BA, IG and DE would be quite murderous with proper lists (2k) and in the hands of a skilled opponent.

You would definitely want to have one of those armies to face off vs one of these armies.

Honorable mention would be vanilla marines, DA and BT.

I actually started to agree with this post, for the most part....
....until it brought up ethereals.

Kroot are pretty good at what they do for what they cost. And the Tau do rely on their HQs/Elites. I agree that aren't bad...they're just hard to use.

We don't really have statistics or a system to properly measure tiers (like in arena wow, or street fighter 4), but this is what I think:

Top tier:
SW Top 3
BA
GK
.
.
.
IG Bit of a drop but still top

Everybody else 2nd tier.

Generally speaking, you can win any tournament with a 2nd tier army if you get good matchups. I only really reserve bottom tier for absolute crap.

So why not DE? Because they lose to IG pretty bad, but right now IG doesn't really lose to anybody. I also feel that DE don't dominate against any of the top armies, so I place them in the 2nd tier.

What's sad is all 4 armies are imperial armies. If you really must have an advantage in 40k, pick an imperial army.

This post is all opinion, and I strongly suggest that you do your own analysis and form your own opinion about what works and what doesn't

"There is no limit to the human spirit, but sometimes I wish there was."
Customers ask me what army I play in 40k. Wrong Question. The only army I've never played is orks.

Knowing is half the battle. But it is only half. Execution...application...performance...now that is the other half.
