League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Mutant Chronicles, the latest 3 Musketeers movie, 9 (although this is more Stitchpunk), both Hellboy films to a certain extent.

Apart from the latter two, why can they not make a good Steampunk film?

I thought Treasure Planet was pretty good steampunk movie

(I'm assuming that qualifies as steampunk?)

well i sure had my fun with the Leaque, the musketeer movie was a mixture of feelings... so^^
the hellboy movies only the first really i liked...the second i kind of felt it was too tried and not hit what was aimed for...

the "recent" sherlock holmes is for me also along those lines a steampunk movie... victorian times and all that brassy action in the style in the movie...

but as you said apart fom that...what else are there movies that one interrested in the genre might have to watch out for?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
the treasure planet for my opinion was a steampunk/ dieselpunk movie...

and City of Lost Children...i have to look into that one...

also mutant chronicles??? is it based on the table toop game? cool...i have to look into that one too...

Mutant Chronicles is a spectacularly entertaining HORRIBLE movie. It's a guilty pleasure, to be sure.

If you don't mind animated movies/anime, Steamboy was done by the same guy who created Akira, although I haven't seen it so I can't honestly vouch for its quality.

Golden Compass is set in "another dimension", but the technology level there is sufficiently steampunk-ish I would think. Plus, Sam Elliot, so bonus points there even if the movie is only so-so.

for forgetting golden compass... seen that movie!

and steamboy , yeah i head about that one... is now on my list of to be watched movies...
and i have no dislikes against anime... it can be pretty entertaining...

For Steampunk Sherlock Holmes:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_Holmes_%282010_film%29

Steam armor, steam carriage, steam dragon.

It doesn't fit canonical Holmes, but it's a damn fun movie.

That said, I'd stay away from any other movies The Asylum does, they're horrendous. While most of their movies(including this one) are derivatives meant to cash in on more legitimate movies(Transmorphers, Paranormal Entity), none of the others are done as well or have casts half as decent.

I have to add the Sherlock Holmes movie (not the last one, the one with Robert Downey Jr.).

It is not super obvious and shoves Steampunk down your throat, but you have the whole Victorian England thing going on, which granted is the time period of the setting.

But you also have some nice science, and the whole plot to kill everyone by using this crazy machine that transmits a signal through the air just screams steampunk.

well that movie for my opinion is more of the dieselpunk theme...the whole period is pre world war two... so not really steam tech anymore... but i like that movie still for the mix of fantastic tech and cool characters

'Sky Captain' is an amazing film but it comes under the 'Pulp' genre. Watch 'Steamboy' and if you like it check out the 'Last Exiles' series. '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' is an original steampunk film as well as 'Island at the Top of the World', 'At the Earths Core' and 'Warlords of Atlantis'.
