Damn their Iranian eyes! 100 years ago, we would have sent in a Gunboat and quelled the situation, now what can we do? I can turn a blind eye to lots of things, but when people start attacking British institutions, I draw the line! Especially when my tax money pays for these buildings!

Apparently, students (who else) have retaliated due to the sanctions imposed last week. The walls have been stormed and paperwork destroyed. The irony is that all the destroyed paperwork will have to be replaced by more paperwork. Why do they always pick on us? The logical target would be the US embassy. And finally, why is it that these protestors always have an Israeli flag to hand? I've long suspected shrewed Arab buisnessmen making a fortune out of selling Israeli flags for burning!

Our embassy are guarded as we all know by the Corp. SO they're arm's room like a freaking mini FoB. I'm pretty sure they're determined not to have a repeat

I'm pretty sure that UK embassies are guarded, it's just that a UK serviceperson couldn't just cap what ostensibly is a civilian protester without causing a major international incident.

WE, unlike Iran, care about that sort of thing. That said, if I were Cameron I would announce that ANY further aggression towards the UK embassy in Iran will be viewed by the UK Gov't as an act of war.

It's pretty low key if there is one, judging by the UK and Norwegian embassies in Tokyo. I imagine embassies in unstable countries have more defences than those in safe countries.

Of course in the case of major civil unrest even a guard of US Marines is unlikely to be able to stop a serious attack. See Saigon 1969 and Tehran 1979.

The reason they attacked the Embassy is because the UK closed all bank accounts from Iran and we said we didn't want any more to do with them.

We did this because they still aren't co-operating with weapon inspectors and still appear to be developing ways to enrich uranium to weapons grade (nukes).

The embassy was guarded by the military but when it's civilians attacking what can you really do?

Not possible since if embassy guards would open fire they would be met by iranian military and things would spiral down into a black hole from there.

All countries are required by law to protect embassies with their internal police/military so it speaks volumes about the s****y regime over there that allow these things to happen.

Remember, you cannot protest in iran unless it is approved by the regime and pay attention to what kind of "students" the protesters actually were.

Iran and the UK have bad history between them. In Iranian culture the British are the embodiment of colonialism so when they have a problem with Western powers, the British appear at the top of their list of people not to like.

They could always attack the Swiss embassy, which is where the US diplomatic offices are.

Isn't our diplomatic relations with Iran something along the line of "hand a note to Switzerland, ask them to pass it along for us"? Or am I thinking about something else?

I think even if there was decent UK military security at the embassy, shooting at the civilians would probably cause some sort of "their soldiers attacked our civilians, this is war, we will bomb Israel" response. I would guess that the military that was present was in charge of making sure everybody got away safely.

Technically if I remember correctly embassies are considered sovereign soil so once the "protestors" crossed the fence they are no longer protesting in Iran but in British territory attacking British nationals.
