SO I heard a rumor today that GW is coming out with two new races. One for fantasy and one for 40k. Has anyone else heard of this?

Black Templars are NOT a new race, they are simply more space marines...

Actually, the rumor's not so crazy if you consider that the source may be talking about the Demiurge and another xenos species for the Tau and the fishmen/insectoid races being discussed for the new WHFB allies book. I'd find the appropriate links for those threads and post them here if I weren't posting from my phone.

Demiurg for Tau and a few surprises for an expansion for fantasy, kind of like dogs of war, wich will include a least 1 new race.
So yes, there are new races coming from GW, but no new army book or codex for said race.
Unless you heard something more specific?

I know what black templars are. (garbage)lol. He wasnt clear on what the races would be, but he said he had heard that there are hints to them in the fluff of the new codexs that have come out. He told me to read the dark elf codex and pay attention to the part about them discovering a tunnel that lead them past the high elves.

YOU DARE CALL THE EMPEROR'S FINEST GARBAGE?! REPENT!
And about the topic, the Tau are going to get the Demiurgs. Other than that, unlikely. I don't know about WHFB.
Besides, a rumor like that does not neccessarily mean anything. In the Codex: Imperial Guard there is a mention of a race known as L'Huraxi. There are a lot of other minor races in the warhammers which occasionally appear in the fluff.

What you refer to (in the Dark Elf book) is most likely Fishmen, GW has been hinting at them for years, and in 40k GW has been hinting at (amongst other thing) Barghesi (sp?). Its just GW trying to fluff out the universes a bit more (in the past there was little serious mention of anything beyond the main powers that be), I wouldn't look to much into it.

This may be something to do with something mentioned at one of the Seminars at this year's UK Gamesday.
In discussion with the design team it was said that as an exercise they were asked to write an army book or codex for an entirely new, unreleased army.
The exercise was to see what the writers could come up with from scratch, meaning that they had to create something from nothing and not rely on previous army books.
For the exercise they wrote a Warhammer armies book for Fishmen, something unique.
It was purely a design exercise to flex the muscles of the codex writers and there were never any plans to release it.
However it is possible that as there are rules for them they may be included in the new WFB allies expansion.
It is also possible that the same exercise was extended to 40K, but this wasn't mentioned.
I suspect it is possible that this information then developed into a rumour of a new WFB race, or it may even be that as the book was written they thought what the hell, but the guys in the seminar said there were no plans to release it.

It was a Codex Hrud AFAIK.
But these general rumours come up once a year and only lead to: "I want Chaos Dwarfs/Cathai/Ind/Arabia/Fimir/Fishmen" or "I want Hrud/AdMech/ LatD/Enslaver" and "we already have more fractions than GW can handle" posts.

The fishmen rear their ugly head again. Does nobody remember how that story started?
There never have been fishmen. There never will be fishmen.
Whilst I can see the Tau getting a new race as a unit or two, but no new armies, for either 40k or WFB.

I thought the fishmen thing started with Mantic Warpath as the 'mysterious 8th race', only as far as the head of Mantic saying the only thing that he could confirm about them is that "they will not be fishmen"?!
Unless it is just a joke on either GW or Mantic's part (remembering that a few of the Mantic guys are ex-GW developers).

Fishmen is a stupid idea and little to no one in the WFB world wants another new army. We have 3 armies that are still 6 or more years old ffs.
There won't be a new army book out for WFB this next year, as iirc it's VC, Empire then Dwarves for 2012 with the Allies "expansion" out at some point as well. Perhaps the stupid fishmen will be squeezed into that book.

Just to clarify that the Fishmen Army book was written purely as a design exercise and there are no plans to release it. It does exist but it was literally just to test the creative skills of the design team.

Actually it is a very old GW-internal running gag, being the standard answer to nerds demanding information about the next army. I guess it originated in the 80s. With the Mantic crew being made up of ex- GW personnel, this inside joke wandered to that company as well. Some ultra-nerds answered by converting fishmen armies and writing rules for them. So if any rumour contains a presumed fishmen release, you can consider that rumour fishy

There were rumors like this when I worked at GW back in 2006 about a brand new 40k race and fantasy. If they do it will be a few years down the road but I highly doubt it honestly. With that I say BRING BACK DA SQUATS!!!!!

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

It depends if you class a race as a playable army with its own codex or a genetically separate species. By the first token, in 40K, each SM codex is a new race and GW could go on producing them nearly forever. By the second token, all the Imperial codexes and most of Chaos are the same race, including Codex Squats if it still existed. I suspect what most people mean is a new alien (non-human) species with its own book to create a playable army with proper models. From that angle I would agree that while it might be fun, I would prefer GW to keep the current variety up to date and competitive before they go off and create new stuff to ignore for 10 years (I'm looking at you, Necrons). Actually I would like them to reduce the number of different Space Marine books in order to achieve more timely updates of other armies.

This pretty much sums up my feelings.
I'd say the "New Race" is likely the playable Demiurge rumored to be in the upcoming Tau Codex.
Fantasy has enough races already, I'd say they really don't another one at this point. They have a ton of Army books way way behind at this point.
