So after seeing some really nice DE blogs on this forum, I finally bit the bullet. I've always loved the models, just tried to hold myself back until i finished my wood elves, which are now very nearly done. I was playing Guild Wars a bit recently and was looking at my Ranger in the character selection screen. I thought the colour scheme would look cool on the DE models, i gave it a try...

First, my Guild Wars Ranger -

And the Wych test model -

I need to pick a colour for the vials, and hair. And was having trouble picking the right colours on the pistol. So none of these areas are finished. I also think a paler skin tone would look better.

For basing, i was planning on red ochre pigment.

Do you think this could work for an army? Any suggestions would be great!

Nice! Very Nice. I agree with what you said about wanting to make the skin tone lighter, I think that'll look good but you got a good base color to do that with. Maybe another light washing in the hair but other wise this is perfect. An army like this would be quite a sight. Good job. Good luck.

That streaky pattern on the armor is brilliant! It makes the armor look like hard organic carapace. The scheme is pretty much a bang on recreation of your reference photo too. As for the pistol I might try painting the currently black parts bronze to help visually separate the handle from the hand and repainting the bronze "bulb" with the streaky pattern leaving the little bumps bronze.

I'm also not completely sold on the hair color yet. Blonde like the Ranger could be cool but might be hard to separate from the flesh. Or maybe just give it another wash like genom.cor suggested. The issue for me that the rest of the model is in strong colors which are overpowering the hair a bit.

Really interested in seeing where this goes. Subscribed.

Cheers guys =) I will be playing with the pistol now Xmas is over. The main thing i'm worried about atm is applying this scheme to vehicles. The Raiders and Venoms have some pretty large plates, so applying the carapace effect to them might be more difficult. I've been researching this tutorial for a way that could work, sustituting in greens ofc. (best tyranids i've ever seen btw)

I did do the base and washed the hair again. (not convinced on the hair yet either)

Do you guys and gals think the base fits?

Hey guys! Had a go at applying the green style carapace to vehicles, and it just didnt look right on larger area's without doing massive greenstuff work to scult scales all over the whole thing. Decided to go with a different colour for vehicles, and try to incorporate the green in the form of a load of tyranid trophies, and the crew ofc. I'm not 100% sure it will work. We'll have to see once it's all finished.

Here is the first raider WIP. I'm still learning with my airbrush, as i only got it recently. So still learning =)

Still have to do some washes, and a bit of streaking on the yellow, and then all the metals etc.

I'm also going to have to incorporate the yellow into the infantry somehow. But that should be easy enough.
Have a good one!

I like the base a lot, very realistic but still contrasts the model. The color for the raider is good. Epiphany! perhaps you can fix your gun problem by painting weapons and equipment to match the raiders. It would make sense, and look good.

Hi !

I find the color scheme of the Wych interesting. The green, the brown and the bronze work well together.
The purple on the hair is quite disturbing for me, it doesn't match with the rest of the scheme. Purple is a color that i really like, but in this case I think it's not the better choice.
The armor looks really nice, I hope it won't be too boring to paint a whole army this way. And the base is pretty nice too.

The base color of the raider is nice and quite original from my point of view. Keep going !

Hey guys, wip crew added, plus a couple of tyranid bits i had.

Tbh, i'm not convinced it will work. Might have to go back to the drawing board.

Still havent decided on a colour for the sails either.

Feeling pretty meh about it tbh. =(

Hey guys. Over at thedarkcity.net theres an army building section named The Archon's Challenge. Basically every 6 weeks a category is picked, and you have those 6 weeks to get it converted/painted etc. 6 weeks is a nice time period for me as it will allow me to slowly build my dark eldar whilst maintaining other projects.

So far, we are at the end of stage 2, which was a troops choice. I did a unit of wyches with their raider transport. The raider isnt quite finished due to me running out of time (opps).. it still needs runes and tyranid trophies, but its table worthy at least.

So expect slow updates on this one. But comments and critique are always welcome!

Have a good one guys =)

Brilliant!

Time to fire some comment grapeshot:

The blonde hair gives the spot of color needed to tie the troops in with the vehicles more. Looking forward to the runes and trophies on the Raider which should tie everything together perfectly!

Seeing a whole unit together makes me appreciate your basing much more as well. The rich, earthy orange sets off your scheme nicely. One detail is that the tufts of grass really complete the rocky desert scrub-land look and I'd like to see more (although this is likely also because you ran out of time to add them.)

Love the sail! How did you get that "mysterious energy" effect?

I get a slight deja-vu feeling from looking at that Shock-Prow since it looks just like one of mine. Are you going to weather the Dark Lance too?

Cheers Jon =) The grass will be added, though of a different shade once it arrives in the mail. I decided to try a lighter (yellower) tone tuft so that it contrasts more with the base.

You are right about the bronze! I shamelessly stole your recipe for ist simpleness across the whole army. I'm still trying to get the consistency of the turquoise wash right, which is probably why the lance doesnt look weathered... I'll take another look at it.

The sail was done with the AB. I made a template of small random curved edges out of a clear projector sheet. Then just played with it till it looked right =)

That Raider is amazing! I also love the carapace look you have on the wych armor. Could you give a quick tutorial on how you got that effect on the sails? I didn't quite follow everything you said above. I have red sails on my DE, and they are kind of boring at the moment...

Subbed btw

Hey Vyler =) The sail was done with the airbrush using a template i made out of a clear plastic sheet (from an overhead projector). I just cut random curves, then made a gradient from black to white, then sprayed really thin red (i think scab red, and maybe some blood red mixed in after) over it to give it colour. Forgot to write it down =( You can then go back over it with white and red again till you get the effect you want.

Heres the template i made....

Any thin plastic should do the trick.

Cheers! The basing is my first try with pigments. I just slapped them on, lol.

=) This type of weathering i wanted to represent general aging. I'm going to add fresh damage once i've got afew vehicles done to play with. I really want to try and represent a raider that has recently rammed something...

TH3FALL3N wrote:Love the raider, all your DE should be yellow

I really like the carapace though! =p Still need to perfect the technique a bit more...

Arachnid-X wrote:Love the raider man, the Nids on the side a nice touch as well.

I gotta work out how to place them to make the trophies look good =) Now that i have a ton of nid spare bits from scrounging around, it should be alot easier.. I'm thinking i may try to make Rune shapes out of certain nid bits, but thats just an idea.... not sure if it will work...

LostSoulCasey'sLaw wrote:Damn, those are awesome! Whats next?

Depends what stage 3 of the challenge over at thedarkcity.net will be. I'm eager! =p

Thanks for all the feedback. It's really encouraging =) I've had alot of good comments, especially about the raider.... Once my sisters are done, i'll be stepping up this project, along with some Beastmen.

Great progress on the vehicles. The paint scheme and weathering are very well done and really fit the kits.

What really earned you a subscription though, the airbrush template trick for the sails. Very slick and useful for my own sails as I was really not liking my current method.

Can't wait to see your army come together.
