My uncle, who is a carpenter, gave me a most excellent christmas present, a gaming table for 40k:

If you're wondering why there's a giant hole in the center, that's where my Realm of Battle gameboard tiles fit. An extra support in the middle of the length of the table was added after this picture was taken, so each tile is supported by all borders. And because you don't have a large tabletop, you can easily take it apart if you want to move it. Especially since it is placed my attic, which is on the 3rd floor.

A demo shot with my yet to be painted terrain, some of my 'Nids and my WIP Grey Knights army. And of course, the Fortress of Redemption; I had to get it as it literally had my name written all over it. As you can see, the Realm of Battle tiles fit in flush with the table, so they don't move around while you play but you don't need to use the clips the board comes with. If you want to change the board set up, you can easily push a tile out from the bottom. The edge of the table kan be used to place your rule books, dice, drinks, reserves, casualties, etc.

And two more random photo's to finish the post:

Now I need to decide which theme to paint my Realm of Battle board in. And most importantly, find the time to paint the board, paint the Fortress of Redemption, finish the Imperial Strongpoint, build and paint the Imperial Sector which is still in the box and finish my Grey Knight army... *sigh* I really need to learn to paint more before I buy more plastic crack.

Personally, I built my own game table and 2X2 tiles. I would die for something as professional as that.

Beautiful table, can't wait to see more!

Can you get some dimensions and cuts of wood descriptions? I'm designing my own game table and trying to get an idea of size and scope.

I know the game surface should be 4' x 6' so the dimensions of the table could be 5' x 7'

Still working out the details and any info would help.

Well, I supplied the napkin 'blueprints' to my uncle with some rough dimensions and he basically took it from there. The inner size is indeed 4' x 6', and it has an edge of ~8cm on the long table edges and ~33cm on the short table edges, which makes for a total of about 250 cm in length and 140 cm in width. The height is about 90cm, which is kitchen counter top height. That makes the models easier to reach than with dining table height (although you'll have to walk around the table to get models on the far end) and means determining line of sight requires less bending over.

The table legs are attached to each other and the short table edges with glue and screws to create two U shaped standards. The long table edges then hook into the table legs with 'ledikant haken' (bed hooks?) to create the main support structure. Some removable screws are added for stability. The table top is created in 4 sections: 2 long table edges and 2 short table edges. Each section is made by attaching two strokes of mdf wood to each other, with the top one being smaller than the bottom one. The wider bottom plate forms the outer rim that supports the realm of battle board, while the smaller top plate (the white boards in the pictures) has the same height as the ream of battle board, making the board nice and flush with the table.

You attach one long table edge to the top of the support frame. All 4 of the top sections have little blocks attached to them to guide them into positions on the support frame. Then both short table edges are inserted into the side of the long table edges with a lamella connection. The other long table edge then locks the side edges in place. The lattice in the middle are simply two strokes of wood attached with glue and screws to each other in a T to add strenght and prevent drooping of the wood. If required, the entire table can be put together/taken apart by removing about 20 screws, takes 10 minutes.

If you need more information or pictures of a specific joint or something I'm more than happy to provide.

Well it's been long enough, time to get this project up and running again. A friend and myself have been asked to do some 40k demos at a Dutch scale modeling event held mid September, and we can't turn up with heaps of unpainted scenery now, can't we?

And I have lots of unpainted scenery to go:
- Realm of Battle Board
- Fortress of Redemption (awesome kit, and quite literally had my name written on it )
- Skyshield Landing Pad (duos as a display stand for flyer models)
- Imperial Strongpoint (two bastions and a load of Aegis Defence Lines, although 2 Quad-guns were already scavanged for my GK Dreads)
- Imperial Sector (to 'ruin' somebody's day )
- Blastscape and Citadel Woods (to get my area terrain on)
- Various objective markers (need something to fight over, don't we? )

Don't know if I can finish everything up before the event, but I'll give it my best shot.

So, starting from the ground up, first up: the Realm of Battle board. I went with a bit of an earthy desolate plains look, with a warm deep brown earth in contrast with cold grey rock. I picked this scheme because it goes well with the colours of most armies and doesn't draw too much attention to itself.

Basecoated the earth with burnt umber, then drybrushed my way through medium grey up to beige in various mixtures and patches to create a natural look. I intend to airbrush various patches of a dark maroon red to create more colour differentiation and to make the slopes of the hills pop out a bit more, once I pick up a new bottle of paint.

A close up of the rocks. Airbrushed them in a dark grey, then drybrushed them up to a light steely grey.

And to do: skulls, and lots of them. A few drybrush passes with various shades of grey and beige should work fine I reckon.

Away from home for work now, so I hope to continue on Wednesday.

Does they paint chip from playing on it? That's why I have not bought one yet...I'm afraid I'd mess the paint up.

You need to seal the paint with either varnish or a PVA mixture to create a scratch resistant surface.

Once I'm happy with the paint I intend to seal it with Woodland Scenic's Scenic Cement, just need to test it on something first to see how it dries up; I obviously want a clear and matt finish that doesn't mess up the paint job.

A small update:

Drybrushed the skull pits from medium grey up to a beige to keep them somewhat muted. Wanted them to stand out a little bit, but not be too much of an eyesore.

Made the hills 'pop' a bit more by airbrushing a dark maroon red around the edges. And also, moar skulls.

A top view. I also airbrushed patches of the maroon red in various places, breaking up the monotone brown somewhat. Did I mention the skulls?

And my models feel right at home! I like how the brown turned out, I think it goes very well with the silver/white/red/blue of my Grey Knights and the beige/black/purple of my 'Nids. There's some skulls in the bottom right in case you didn't notice.

And I'm going to leave the board like this, at least for the moment. I'm quite happy with the result, but you never know when you get an idea to improve something.
Up next, the Fortress of Redemption. And, yep, you've seen that right, more skulls! Khorne would be so proud of me.

A little update on the Fortress of Redemption:

First bunker annex is complete!

A skull doing his Kiss impression.

Also did some attempts at some OSLish effect from the various light sources on the bunker.

And the top deck with the missile silo closed.

And opened.

Now for the other 3 parts.

Man, looking fantastic there mate. So jealous of that gaming table, it's really awesome with the way it works with the RoB board. And the paint work on the terrain is top notch too.

Also liking where the Fortress is heading.

This is looking real good, so many skulls on the realm of battle board though, GW sure like their skulls.

But other than that the board is nice and realistic, and the fortress is coming along nicely, hope it all gets down by the date needed. Plus your armies look great on there.

Almost 300 drybrushed skulls later, the main angel tower is finished!

Here with the completed bunker annex.

And the front side.

I think I'll have the other 2 parts finished by the end of the week.

Great table concept, and a great finish on the terrain so far mate, I am really jealous of anyone that can have a full time gaming table, let alone one of this build quality. Well done.

A small update:

Almost finished! Need to do the lighting effects on the left bunker annex, but it was close to midnight when I finished all the gold details (painted enough golden Gothic arches for a while ), and I didn't think powering up an airbrush compressor late on a Sunday evening would have been appreciated.

After that I only need to paint a couple of the optional heavy bolters and searchlight to round it up.

Sadly I can't finish it until I get back from a business trip next Wednesday.

And it's finally done! Airbrushed the lights on the left bunker annex, and finished the heavy bolters and searchlights. These are magnatized so that they can be placed on the main tower's corners and the crenels of the bunker annexes.

Top view.

Full frontal of the main tower.

One of the searchlights.

Skulls for the skull tower!

Rear stage entrance.

And the twin-linked Icarus lascannon turret!

The modelling convention is next week, so as I seriously doubt I can finish any other terrain before that due to the time this thing took up (I think it used up 40-50 hours of my spare time), I going to try to finish some of the GK models I have half-finished to take to the convention. I'll continue with the rest of terrain after that.

Just came back from the Dutch modelling convention 'ModelBrouwers' (brouwersdag.nl, Dutch site), where me and a friend demonstrated 40k to the uninitiated masses. Had a lot of fun: lots of positive reactions and interested people and even met some other 40k players from the area. Here some shots from the boards:

My Fortress of Redemption, where the stalwart Ultramarines held fast against an onslaught of Xenos.

And another piece to add to the terrain collection:

Assembled and painted the Skyshield Landing Pad today, shown here in the unfurled configuration.

As it's already dark outside and there's only a single light bulb in the attic, I had to use my trusty Land Raider as an extra illumination source.

Top view. I intend to add pigments to show scorch marks from the serviced flyer's engines at a later date, as it's currently a little to clean looking, but it'll do for now.

And it's a nice display base for flyer models.

Does your uncle do commission work on tables?
If so, I would really like to have a table like that :O

I don't think he has the time or interest in doing commission work, especially as he already has a full time job and recently got 2 grand children to keep him busy. Heck, this table already took him close to a year to finish. But hey, next time I see him, I'll check; never hurts to ask.
