@Ghosty - You're right. But my flatmate actually had the kit for a bionic eye in his gang stash, and chose explicitly to save it for a "better ganger". Since I had the kit as well, and Scat now had a very explicit reason to hate his old gang, we figured it would fit the narrative pretty well if my gang came across him before he faded out. They also had a good reason to be searching the area, but more of that in the fluff post Thanks for your compliment - underhanded is kinda the way of the world in the underhive anyway

@Scrazza - You're right, it was only one arm. If a ganger loses both eyes though, the rulebook explicitly states they should be retired. Since necromunda's way more story-based than 40k, though, we figured we could let it slide! And dead on on the head choice - good eye!

@Captain Roderick - Thanks! The fist is slightly modified from one of the metal cadian sergeants; I just switched the thumb over to make it a left hand instead of a right one. I'm glad you like the stance, it went through a fair few changes - trying to get a natural running pose with a forearm bigger than your head is surprisingly difficult! I haven't decided whether he'll get full arbite kit yet - he's only supposed to have flak on my gang list, so I feel like he's kinda pushing it already. He'll definitely have more electronicy gubbins before I'm done though
And that's 100% what I was going for with the poster, I just didn't realise at the time! The Underhive players had recently found an ancient offworld film script about a fantasy world called "Pearl Harbour" and decided to put on a play about it. It didn't do too well :(

@neil101 - Thanks so much, man! Scrazza is dead on, it's from the space wolf set. Be warned though - as it's an SM head, it's pretty massive, has no neck, and this weird metal collar thing. Worth the carving though IMO!

Thanks for all the comments everyone! MIght be quiet for a few days now - it's exam season in earnest! :(

Thanks to the GW redesign of the Cadian models, that style of armour - supposedly flak - can easily pass for Carapace, and vice versa. So as long as it's not as complete as http://kofler.dot.at/40k/units/Arbites_Necromunda_Enforcer_Patrol_Squad.gif you should be fine with a bit of artistic licence.
how many bionics is he going to have in the end? always found those hassle, although a very-shaved-down bolt pistol muzzle makes an ok bionic eye, if you find the right one.
And I can understand Pearl Harbor not working as a play in the 40K universe. They'd never be able to get the necessary celebs and pointless hype needed to make people actually go and see it

Hey all! Bit of a rubbish fluff update, something I wrote in 15 minutes as a revision break! It's the start of a campaign I'm planning, and also a bit of character development for Farrell. The structure before the story starts is ripped off directly from some of Migsula's fluff, so I'm really hoping he won't mind

Hope you like it! And if it's a bit crap, eh, it was 15 minutes

Malaena,

heavy breathing

it’s me.

I’m sorry I haven’t sent word in a few weeks now – I wasn’t sure anything was getting through. It’s been tough.

I’m not –
I’m not going to be coming home, Malaena.

It’s all gone to hell. Everything down here, just – I don’t know what happened to the others. Eli, Pirren, Clara. I think they might be dead. I took her with me, the girl. It was stupid. Throne, it was stupid.
But she was so desperate...

pause, heavy breathing

I’ve been missing you, Malaena. I wanted to come back to you. I tried to tell them we should go, that we should have left when the guards did, when he moved in – but... Crucien wouldn’t let us. He said it was humanitarian, but it – it wasn’t humanitarian anymore.

I don’t know how far I can –

Rustling. Subject grunts with pain

I’m going to keep moving. If I leave her here, she’ll die. If she dies, it was for nothing. I’m leaving the transmitter, I- I won’t contact you again. Crucien will look for you. Play him this. He’ll know.

I love you, Malaena. Always will. I’m sorry.

Stay safe.

Scarper, this log is one of the reasons I finally got around to registering on this site. Been following it for ages and I love how its developed - your personalising of every miniature has been impressive and very cool. Especially for Guard - no wonder you shifted towards Necromunda

Twitch - I love this guy, he looks cool and just a little crazy with that petrol bomb.

Coop - flamethrower equals WIN. Looks fine - if anything I would lengthen the nozzle a little but otherwise leave it at that. His pose is sweet by the way, good luck with the water effects.

Riffraff = Shizzle- the chop job there is sweet and I love the hat.

Farrell - this guy is very cool and the base has evolved splendidly - I love the graffiti, especially the l'il red dragon thing. He really does look like a kinda father figure. Tho that may be cos your fluff has corrupted my mind.

Sweet fluff by the way, and loving your recent adoption of a blind ganger. Thanks for all your hard work and I hope that your recent health issues aren't too serious.

Hey again Dakkadians! Thanks for the replies

@neil101 - Thank you! Funny you should say that - originally, it was going to be a pict-feed, but I couldn't find a way to cover his movements without looking like either a script or breaking the dialogue. Maybe next time!

@Jihad_Ragsta - Thank you so much, I really mean it. The idea that others might be enjoying what I'm doing really helps keep me going when I'm having a slow patch. Thanks for all the input and the compliments too. I'm glad you like Twitch - your comment slapped me into actually finishing him today, so hopefully you'll like

@ghosty - It would! Would be pretty expensive though, considering he could still have a 1 in 6 chance of taking all his gear with him to the grave every time someone takes him down...
(Also, I don't think I've mentioned it, but your avatar is ace! I really like all the little changes you make to it - are they for any events in particular, or just whatever you feel like changing at the time? )

Exam's done now, but I have a research project to write up for Friday, so hobby time is still a little slim :( Here's a few things I've been working on this weekend in spare moments though, just to show you I'm still ticking slowly over:

The parts for Coop's base turned up, so he's finally getting a lick of paint! I was really really proud of this head, right up until Dakka zoomed in on it, at which point I vomited. No viewing in the gallery allowed!

I've also based up Twitch, and had a bash at making his molotov a bit more interesting. I'm not really happy with it - anyone happen to have any good techniques for sculpting or painting fire?

As always, all input is majorly valued, good or bad. So be as harsh as you like!

Hopefully a bigger update soon - free time would be lovely!

Great log! For fire I suggest you basecoat sunburst yellow and then add 2 layers of the baal red wash. You can then re-highlighrt with yellow. Again great minis!

Sup scarps,
I think the thing that makes the molotov a bit odd is that it seems to have fire coming out of it - if the flame had got in that far, twitch's day would get considerably shorter!

Possibly, if you can be bothered, remodel it so there is a rag coming out of it, with flames rising from that?

Other than that, I enjoyed the fluff and keep your chin up lad!

@ Scarper - H'why, the picture changes whenever I am inspired to do so. For example, in the last week I had a major Metal Gear Solid nerdy moment with someone on Dakka, and thus was inspired to snake the ghost up. So whenever the mood hits me, it gets changed.

Incidently, Twitch is looking good, and Coops mug seems good as well.

@konst80hummel - Thanks so much, that's really nice of you! I'll be sure to try out your flame recipe when I get a chance,

@Cpt. Roderick - Good point! I've snapped off the flame and added a lil green stuff rag in - I'll post a new pic once I've got it painted up. Thanks for the tip! And I'm glad you like the fluff as well
Any luck with that sniper you were looking for?

@ghosty - I just really like the little changes. I'll see if I can guess what's going on next time you switch him up! Thanks for the compliments, too.

@neil101 - Hey! It's only been... bugger, a little longer than I thought it was. If only I didn't have work to do, I'd have more time for painting! The copplestone casts are ace - every model in their scavenger line has a character of its own. Glad you like his base - I've been hunting the net for ideas!

Speaking of which, here is a bonus rubbish update for anyone who happens to be looking at the thread again - Coop's base! Had a lot of fun playing round with weathering powders and inks. Hope you like!

ah ya caught me , up till the wee hours , taking a sneak peak ;-) the base is cool , funnily enough iam looking into weathering powders , i noticed forgeworld does some and i saw some on mad, art's city of death blog , that look pretty good , although i have loads of pastels etc that i was thinking of grinding down ... can i ask where you got yours mate, i really like the effect.

Thanks neil! Late night blog viewings are fine in my book - I won't tell anyone if you don't At the mo I'm using the FW weathering powders - mainly their orange rust and fresh mud, though black soot and a few others are pretty handy too. They're a little tough to use - I'm still learning how to do it right, tbh. I'd love to see what you do with them though (Can't believe how quickly you're getting through stuff on your blog!)

Today's update is Coop, painted up. I had some fun with water effects, and tried really hard to get his jeans to look like he'd just waded in them. There are a few bits I'm happy with, and several that I'm not, but I'm waaaay too tired to go into it. Bonus points for anyone who identifies which are which! Sorry if the angles in the pictures are a little strange - I really am dead on my feet, and can't be arsed to retake em. Enjoy, anyway!

UPDATED PICS BELOW

Please let me know if you like / dislike, I'm pretty ambivalent about this one. Constructive comments would be ace too, so please criticize away!
Thanks for all your input so far,
Scarp

Right, lemme chuck some CC your way!

Whilst I like Coop, I'm not a fan of the posing of the head. At all. I previously liked the idea of him facing the way his hand is, helping someone out of the water, y'know? Now his head seems at a bit of an odd angle, and kinda changes the aesthetic of the imagery somewhat.

Now, I like his jacket, but I feel the fur trimming (great work there) seems to be lost when set against his whit t-shirt.

Water effects look ace, as does his hair. Very unruly, and very cool.

Hope my moan hasn't dissuaded you at all

Hi Scarper

Have to agree with Ghosty about the head.
Again this is intended as constructive criticism and something to hopefully help with future conversions.

It is a common fault imho with miniature figures because unlike flesh and bone, plastic is inflexible. So when the head is rotated the neck just goes with it and is unconvincing.
If you gently place a hand around your throat- GENTLY- don't want you throttling yourself! and turn your head to look over a shoulder you can get a feel *ahem* for hoe the neck flexes.

If the ganger is looking up whilst turned then the gap at the back of his head and shoulder would narrow.
Again place your hand at the back of your neck and copy his pose. (Would advise not doing so in public )

Hope that helps
Otherwise I think he is grand and the watery base is good too.
Might be worth really matting down some of the corrugated iron at the top to really emphasise the wet parts. It is hard to tell if the top part is matt, may be the photo/flash that is homogenising the finish?

@ghosty - Not at all! I really appreciate the pointers. You did manage to hit on my biggest problem first of all - the frigging head. I tried and tried to get him to work looking the other way, but because I'd painted his head before the body, his gaze was in the wrong place. Looking at someone behind you, you'd turn most of the way, then gaze right. It sounds insignificant, but without it, the pose just looked wrong. I was in a rotten mood last night - long day, don't ask - and didn't want to risk messing up the whole head just to change the eyes. I will be doing it this lunchtime though when I'm on break from work, so I'll try to update this eve. Thanks for the tips on the lining and the jacket too - I'll throw a few more washes on the lining, and get some highlights on raised folds. It's all stuff I should have done before - should never paint in a "can't be arsed" mood!
Oooh, and thanks for the compliments! I was pretty pleased with how the base came out

@Briancj - Thanks a lot, that sounds like a really nice idea! I'll see if I can get hold of some ork heads next time I'm in the FLGS.

@Chibi Bodge-Battle - Thanks a lot for the tips! I do understand what you mean, and I'll try to keep it in mind when I switch up his posting later today Thanks for the compliment! It might just be the photo on the corrugated iron - it all got a matte spray, and I then reglossed the water.

UPDATES TO COME LATER TODAY

The head is much better now and the right hand makes more narrative sense, as it looks like Coop is offerilng help to a comrade.

I would lose the gloss on the jeans tbh
Wet denim darkens but soaks the water so tends not to gloss up.

Maybe also tone down the whites of the eyes with a blue grey wash. IMHO at the scale the whites would not be so prominant. If you consider it, can you see the whites of someones eyes if they are so far away they appear to be the same size of a mini. That is a personal thing though.

What an awesome blog! Loving the fluff behind the models, something I really want to work on, your stuff is really inspirational. I can't believe I didn't find this earlier. Just spent the afternoon reading the entire thing. I'm doing medicine too, in 4th year at Dundee. And your blog was a very welcome change from hernias!

Did you choose a name for the vulture dude?

I think the shine on the jeans makes it look like its not just water he's been in, maybe fire some green-brown stains on it too?

Keep up the fantastic work!

@ Chibi - Thanks! I tried to follow your advice, so hopefully the neck looked a lot more believable I'll bear the tip with the jeans in mind, but might not be able to correct it on Coop himself, as the only matte I've got is a spray. In terms of eyes, I've always thought that it's kind of a personal choice thing. I realise the eyes wouldn't be as visible as they are at 28mm scale, but I feel like they add a lot of character to a model, and let you empathise more. Might just be me though! Thanks so much for all your input though, it's really helpful and always appreciated

@ghosty - Thanks! I'm glad you like him!

@Perkustin - I actually loved that game, but any resemblance is completely unintentional. Had to look up a 'half-tuck', but damn, I should have added one!

@Mohaniker - Hey, I'm fourth year too! Hope you didn't land a surgical attachment for GI - staring into body cavities gets pretty old pretty quickly
Thanks so much for the compliments, it's really nice of you to say so! I think a lot of the praise is undeserved with so much of the awesome stuff to see on Dakka though Thanks for the suggestion with Coop's jeans, too - I'll see if I can dirty them up a little more. I love writing the fluff parts, even if I never feel they're particularly well done - with necromunda especially, it seems so much easier to put time into a model if you've got a real character fleshed out in your head ! Do you play yourself? The vulture guy is still currently unnamed - I never really finished the guard when I started with necro. Still open to suggestions though...

TODAY'S RUBBISH UPDATE - More changes on Coop! The excitement! The head I used might be getting a break for a bit, and here's a possible, WIP replacement - what do you reckon?

It's a little hard to see in the pic, but the catachan head has had some (minor!) facial surgery. I was going for a playful, mocking half smile. She's stuck, and his hand's just out of reach. I'm halfway through some fluff for the pair of them, but they're supposed to be really close, so as a friend on another forum suggested, the other head didn't really fit. Still, working on!

Hey up Scarp,
No further luck on the sniper front unfortunately, I've kinda sidelined that plan in exchange for writing plot for now. I might look into it again when the game's up and running - hopefully next week.

As far as the changes to coop are concerned, I think the swaps are a good idea, and I'll be really interested in how that new head works out. Do you reckon you could post another pic of him from a different angle, maybe as if he's looking at us?

Also, I think the wooly hat is cool, but maybe needs some more texture - like the horizontal structure in the example you posted.

Good luck!
