Titan's of any size don't ignore crew shaken. so why should the Golgotha?

Also, The deathstrike missiles don't suffer weapon destroyed, so for me it makes sense that would carry over to the Golgotha.

I was browsing eBay, and that auction showed up. I just couldn't resist. Really, anything from what I consider to be the "Golden Era" of GW (Pre 3rd edition) gives me goosebumps. If I was rich, I'd set out to amass a full collection.

As for my IG... Well, I've got an idea forming in my head... A bad, bad idea. But i means ditching all of my infantry. I think I can keep the vehicles, but I may need to strip and repaint 'em. We'll see.

--B.

NOTE: "Golden Era" is, basically, my late teens to early 20's. Not based on any ruleset or whatever. It was when I first encountered GW, and was smitten for life.

@dave: I accept all gak. And you're right. Most Marines *ARE* boring. Adepticon was full of marines, marines, marines.

Thankfully, My team plays ultracool Badab-War era Marines, with spiffy paint schemes and cool fluff.

@Childe: I played my first game of 40K and Epic (Adeptus Titanicus) in 1988. I bought my first Citadel minis in 1987. I didn't know what the minis were for, only that they were unlike anything I'd ever seen. In 88, I was taught by a group of visiting BRITS how to play the games. They had brought some of their stuff!

So, I am a total fool for Nostalgia. And I have fond, fond memories of "the old days" (tm). Well, except for close combat in 2nd edition. OMFG.

Anyways! I wanted an old-skool Leman Russ for my Golden Demon project, and I was lucky to find one Mint In Box from a seller on eBay, who wasn't asking for an insane amount of cash. Join me, now, as I unbox this treasure, and explain why I think the new kits suck. For some of you, this will be something you've never seen, having grown up or interacted only with the new Computer-Designed kits. I hope to show you what you missed.

All images are WAY-ZOOMABLE!

Sherman, set the WAYBAC machine to 1994...

Here's the box. Bright, shiny. GW wasn't quite into that whole GRIMDARK thing as they are, now. If you look back at RT/2nd Edition paint schemes, they were all pretty darn bright. Banners and flags ruled the battlefield, and there was, I feel, more of a 'joie de vie' than there is now. We were all part of one big happy family. Remember, this is really pre-internet, so your FLGS (and GW Store) was where you went to find friends, other players, and buy almost all of your product. Things make look 'primitive' to you, if you're one of my younger readers. And, yes, that's certainly true. The "great paintjob" of the day was drybrush-and-a-wash, and decals were tricky affairs, sometimes requiring three layers of decal to achieve a multi-color effect.

On the back, information in the usual GW languages. English, French, Spanish, and German. PROTIP: Note the fact that Space Marines are posed with the Leman Russ. This was a-ok back then. Also, the background scenery was used in almost every battle report and product shot EVER.

Crack the box open, and you were greeted with...SPRUES! Oh, yes. Five beautiful sprues. The box felt heavy, was full, and gave you that satisfying "I got good value for my hard-earned money' feeling.

Pulling the sprues out, I'm pleased that they are intact. A few parts have fallen off (as expected), but they're in the box. Five sprues made up the kit, two of which (tracks and wheels) were shared between the Leman Russ and Chimera kits. Note that, back then, the track sprue was cast in black plastic. If you zoom in, you can see the phenominal level of STUFF packed into the sprues. The sponsons, back then, were not optional. All Leman Russ had them. You could replace ONE Heavy Bolter with a Heavy Flamer, which was amusing as all get out, given how vehicle damage worked.

Additionally, because there were all these pieces parts, it encouraged kitbashing. GW also encouraged this. In those days, it was normal to take stuff from other tank kits, and spruce up your tank, or use the targeter box for some other project. The Accessories sprue, standard with all Imperial Guard vehicles, gave plenty more fodder for modelling ideas and fun. You had extra doors, tracks, and wheels, no problem.

At the bottom of the box is the paper materials. All kits came with their own decal sheets and flags/banners, matched to the vehicle. There was not a 'one size fits all' sheet stuck into every kit. Chimeras had their own decals and banners, same with Space Marine Bikes, Eldar and Ork kits. These decals and flags pop up on eBay, you should take a look for them if you've never seen 'em before. I guess what I'm trying to get at is that I feel the value for your money was much, much higher than it is today. Some might say, "Well, these decals just made people less creative, everyone did the same thing", which I will refute. They were inspirational to people, and folks happily made up their own bright and colourful paint schemes, mixed and matched decals, and made their own flags and banners.

Here's the "Hobby Flyer" in the kit, suggesting you buy more stuff, selling White Dwarf, etc. On the back is a stripped down version for each Language.

Note the 'special offer', here. One Terminator, one Lizardman, four pots (the best pots Citadel ever made) of paint, a brush, and a how-to booklet and hobby booklet.. $9.95 USD, 5 Pounds Sterling. I still have the booklet. PROTIP: Back in 1994, Australians paid the same for their stuff as people in the US!

The instruction BOOKLETS were way, way, way (one more time) WAY superior to what you get now. All hand-drafted, each piece was numbered, labelled, and explained. You understood that you were attaching a storage locker, or gluing on a maintenance hatch! The 'exploded views' were very clear, and the instructions were step by step. There was no confusion. Today's kits are certainly simpler. Everything is 'keyed' so they only fit one way, and the CAD images are certainly detailed...but they really skip steps in today's instructions, and you just don't get the same feeling of understanding. But, maybe that's not really needed for a 13 year old.

Finally, in the back of each booklet, you got some painting instructions, and a Datafax in each language. You were encourgaed to photocopy ( ) the 'fax and/or cut out the one from the booklet, and glue it to cardboard from a cereal packet. GW eventually offered full-colour versions of these, but you didn't have to buy them.

That's right. Buy the kit, get the rules. How's THEM apples for you?

Thanks for taking this trip back in time with me. Please step clear of the time vehicle. The gift shop is down the hall and to the left.
