Next squad is basecoated and shaded. Gonna add some Yriel Yellow, then start on details. This squad consists of the 10 marines from the Battle for Macragge boxed set that I bought new. That's how long they've been unpainted.

I hate painting red.

Also, any advice on how to paint my drop pods in the future? Specifically, those vanes, where I've seen them painted a different color to offset them, such as dark grey or black or even red for the 3rd company. I'm not sure they look good painted red.

If anything I might go with the dark grey, or just leave them yellow . Any suggestions welcomed.

I'm nearing completion of my third tac squad. I've never been this productive.

Spoiler:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I have now 'Ardcoated another squad of tac marines. This evening, I'll be applying decals and then dullcoting them. I've had these minis for ages. It feels real good to out paint to them and get them finally ready for action.

Now... do I finally do that Devastator squad, which has been the star of several games, or keep the tac squad goodness rolling and start on 4th squad? Dilemmas, dilemmas.

So far, all of my tactical marines use black tactical arrow transfers. Since there are only twenty on the FW transfer sheet that are black, and the GW space marine transfer sheet doesn't have any at all, I've run out. I don't want to spend $25 for another FW sheet.

So this is my plan, there are some on the FW sheet that ate white, but outlined in black. I was going to paint them in, and hope I'm steady enough not to screw it up.

However, looking at them, as they are now, they don't look bad. The only reason to paint them black is maintain uniformity with the first two squads. What do you think?

Spoiler:

And just like that, 3rd squad is done. I think I'm going to keep this Tac squad train going. At this rate, it won't be long before I finish them all. Oh, the flamer I finished in the last batch belongs with this squad. And he's ultimately why I decided to paint the tac arrows black.

It's been a long two days, but during it, I managed to find time to strip four 3rd edition tac marines, rebuild them slightly where shoulder pads came off and an arm and bolter were missing, and convert one into holding a missile launcher, so I can round out my Tac squads.

Then I primed them today, broke out the airbrush and basecoated them and ten Mk III marines, 3 Centurions and an ironclad dreadnought. Then took a brush and shaded them to within an inch of their life in Nuln Oil.

Over the next few weekends, I'll paint two more tactical squads (giving me a total of 5,) and the centurions and the dread.

I still need to purchase a dread or two, and some Rhinos, to round out my company. Turns out I have plenty of assault marines and devastators.

I would say GW has slightly changed their brushes. My medium drybrush has seen better days, and when I went to replace it, this flattened thing is what I got.

Spoiler:

My original one here had a conical shape to the bristles. This may work better. Who knows.

I was in the shower today planning what I wanted to do for tonight when it occurred to me that I missed a portion on the last squad I painted. Looked at the pic, and yep, I completely forgot to paint the grips under the bolter barrels black.

My fourth squad is finally done. As of now, I am almost back up to what I had painted before I decided to strip everything and repaint them as IF. I'm ten scouts short of that. I do have some thing I didn't have before, like the terminators and the one bike.

I tried something new on this squad. I tried to add some areas where it looked liked shells might have bounced off, knocking paint off. I kinda like it, and I don't really want them to look really weathered, so I think this is enough for me. Oh, and I also used some Bolter and Chainsword transfers for my black tactical arrows. They worked okay, not as good as the FW decals, but definitely better than buying another $25 sheet.

Next up is my ironclad dreadnought. I need a good name for him.

I just recently completed three librarians. Well, almodt completed. I sill need to add a decal and dullcote the third one. And of course I left the correct decals at home. I did assemble (partially - I left part of the plasma cannon at home too. Blergh) a heavy weapon tactical, for the last person in my company. I need to redo some bases, and paint a crapload of marines, but I have the 3rd Company of the IF.

Spoiler:

Still in the box, I have a Land Raider Crusader, a stormtalon, a rhino, three drop pods, and a Sternguard squad. Assembled and partially painted, I have a Land Raider and a Predator which has a broken sponson.

I'm gonna make this old Sternguard vet my first, non-Primaris lieutenant. So far, I've pinned him to a 32 mm base and glued my last Imperial Fist upgrade kit backpack to him. Once everything is dry, I'll need to prime him, but it's raining and the temp is dropping.

Spoiler:

After him, the only things I'll need to add to my company are Primaris models.

I've decided to forego the shiny things I need to paint to play my army list, and have settled on painting more tacticals. In this case, the Mk. III marines i purchased a while back.

I'm not sure if I like the red on the shoulder pads. I think Mk. III looks really good with black or dark steel trim on the shoulder pads.

I'm also painting an old metal Sternguard vet as a lieutenant.

I mentioned to someone once how I paint my IF, with a Nuln Oil wash over the basecoat, and they were aghast that I would do that. Here is a before and after pic. On the right is a primed, basecoated model washed in Nuln Oil and on the left is one I've done that with, then gone over it carefully with Averland Sunset again. Hopefully, it shows the contrast where the armor plates show up better with the darker lines between them.

Working on my last tactical squad. This will be 60 line troopers completed, along with captain, chaplain, 3 librarians, dread, and one bike. Not sure what I'll do next, but probably devastators. They've been waiting a long time.

Spoiler:

I tried a checker pattern on the sergeants sword. Not sure how I feel about it.

I've done quite a bit, but realized when I switched to Imgur that it wasn't resizing my photos like Photobucket used to. So these last couple of pages are probably awful, with gigantic pictures. I stopped posting pictures until I could figure it out.

I just realized I could use Dakka, especially since I already have a gallery. So here are a couple of things I've done in the last few weeks, and I'll post more later.

My non-Primaris lieutenant...

My company champion...

Grrrrr..... Finecast.

Just opened Lysander, began snipping stuff off the sprue carefully, and banner pole broke while snipping a gate next to it.

Edit: I drilled thru the center of a pole.

It's a very short pole, but still... I drilled thru a pole. Somehow, I repaired this banner pole and pinned it to Lysander's top. And pinned him to the base.

So I spent a while not painting. I did manage to get my home area set up again with all the paints I use most arranged in order in the nail polish rack.

Unfortunately, at home, I have to spend a lot of time keeping my mother company. She still doesn't do well alone since my dad died three and a half years ago. But last week, I tried to get started on Lysander and finish the three characters I had been working on. I put transfers on them, glossed and applied dullcote to them. I'm almost done with their bases. Just grass tufts to go.

I also received my Sotar 20/20 in the mail a few weeks ago from Badger and practised a little bit on Lysander with it and was able to get base coats of yellow and red on the model without too much overspray That is pretty cool.

Pics on the champion, lieutenant and Imperial Space Marine to follow when they're complete, but here is a couple shots of the progress on Lysander.
