I'll just buy used when I upgrade my console later this year. I'll miss out obviously on alot of the multiplayer hype but there are just too many wrinkles both in game and with bioware as a corporation to ignore. It'll still be an ok to good game 6 months from now.

From that review:

It wasn’t there on your magic quantum telescopes when you left, but (and I’m not being facetious here, this genuinely is the plot) no one thought that things might change on planets over the course of six bloody centuries.

It seems he is having trouble grasping astronomical timescales. For example, the Ancient Egyptian empire began around 5,000 years ago. In the time from then to now the Earth is pretty much the same. 600 years is not a long enough timescale for any really major astronomical event to occur, at least any kind which can be predicted and accounted for.

No rewards. The Pathfinder crates I was supposed to get as a reward weren't there.

My guess is that Bioware has decided that unless YOU host the match, it doesn't count for your APEX Strike mission. There's nothing to indicate that, but it's the only thing that makes sense. With this in mind, I went back to the Strike mission selection screen, picked the same APEX mission again (it was still there), and selected Host. And then I waited. And waited.

It seems to be a 50% chance of the mission actually completing, it has registered with me when I have joined someone elses game and it hasn't registered when I have been hosting. Hopefully it get's fixed as extremely annoying!

Yeah.

Comments regarding stuff revealed in the early game follows -

Spoiler:
Planets don't go from "uninhabited habitable world" to "devastated and nearly uninhabitable" in just six centuries without outside intervention or a massive catastrophe. Having that happen with one planet would be possible, but extremely unlikely. Having that happen on two would be seen as pretty close to impossible. Best guess, though, is that it's going to apply to pretty much every single target habitable world in the cluster.

So there would be plans for one of the initial survey targets not panning out for some reason (perhaps Ark Hyperion reached Habitat 7 and discovered that there'd been a comet impact which devastated the planet). In that case, presumably they'd do what Ark Hyperion does in the game - move to the Nexus and plan the next move there. But there would still be multiple other habitable worlds to use as targets (remember - only four arks plus the Nexus, and yet the Hyperion target was Habitat 7, indicating that there were extra target worlds), and Hyperion's Pathfinder could have found another suitable target world to colonize. But that's not an option right now because the two known Habitat worlds can't be colonized without work, and the other three arks are missing - presumably their target worlds were just as bad as 1 and 7. The problem facing the Andromeda Initiative right now is something that just flat out doesn't happen under ordinary circumstances - at least in the Milky Way of Mass Effect. Something very strange is going on.

The Scourge seems to fit the needed definition of strangeness. It's not directly detectable on sensors (Hyperion effectively blunders into it). And there's mention that the buildings on Habitat 7 seem to be connected to it. I'm wondering if Bioware decided to use the dark matter plot points in ME2 that were dropped and ignored for ME3.

If that's the case, then it's pretty bad. The point behind APEX missions is to persuade (in a friendly fashion) people who don't care for MP to play MP so that they can get boosts for the SP game. If the reward system for playing MP is bugged so that the rewards are only handed out erratically, then fewer people are going to play the MP missions. The missions are rough enough as it is (of the three Bronze missions I ran yesterday, I only completed *1* - and iirc all three missions ran for about half an hour). Telling people that they might not get the rewards even if they complete the mission is going to hurt.

How did you do generally in ME3 mp? Did the difficulty go up as Kan was hoping? If so, did the rewards increase proportionally?

Can't comment on that myself. I only played it for a short bit, and didn't even get my first MP character (one of the Asari classes) to 20. It was probably a combination of my disgust with the ME3 ending, and the fact that the class I was playing did a lot of biotic charging... which was suicidal against the already very difficult banshees (there was a way to avoid that by ending the charge early so that you'd do the damage without giving the banshee the opportunity to one-hit melee kill you, but I don't think I ever really tried it).

The company that makes denuvo got hacked a while back after leaving parts of their website insecure and open to just random url searches. The thieves got in and stole tons of correspondence including years of technical back and forth between the company and various game makers about making denuvo work Which gave them insight into cracking it in general.

I don't play but have watched a bunch of normal play through videos this weekend. In just normal walkthroughs on missions, the blank stares/silly walks/unacceptable texture pop in is quite frequent. Actual glitches as opposed to poor optimization/effort are much less common. The most I saw was an npc who appeared mid sentence one during the second dialog fork.

I've had issues with getting the right distance/facing/direction from NPCs in order to be able to talk to them. It often takes me several seconds of trying to position my character before the onscreen prompt to talk appears. That's been the only real problem I've noticed so far.

The weird thing is that I barely noticed that issue during the preview.

I DO play, and in my experience it is in no way "quite frequent". I have about 17 hours in and those 3 examples I posted are what I've seen so far.

ymmv I guess but it's definitely not the bug-filled catastrophe a few reviews are making it out to be in any way.

Definitely some pretty bad dialogue now and then, though.

Spent a few hours with it yesterday and I've noticed a few things:

- The comparison many are making to Mass Effect 1 seems oddly correct. I didn't expect this. Not that it's a complaint but I can see where others might disagree.

- Conversation are...varying in quality. Some are full of emotion and great dialogue. Others...aren't. And there are some odd issues; I was sprinting around and bumped into someone I needed to talk to, he proceeded to run away, but I had activated the 'talk to' option. He was on the other side of the room, outside my field of vision for the entire conversation.

- Had some REAL issues with multiplayer; rubber banding, being thrown THROUGH buildings/solid objects, and I've seen player models frozen in a stance and then 'hover' around still fighting. Additionally, and this is mostly me I imagine, but MP is HARD.

- As far as characterization goes I don't see all the issues the reviewers whined about. True, some of the dialogue is bad, but otherwise the characters themselves are all pretty different from anyone else I've interacted with throughout the previous games.

I think it needs a patch or two, which is sad given it's a AAA title with the support of one of the biggest producers in gaming. Then again, I suppose that's a thing now too - releasing a game before it's ready with Day 1 DLC/Micro transactions and then when people bitch about it simply tell them it's 'art'. All that said, I'm going to play the gak out of this game.

I found this review which seems pretty legit and about where I fall (now about 19ish hours in). A good, but not truly great, game.

I haven't beaten it yet though so my opinion is still fluid.

I played the living hell out of the ME3 mp and I would say it had its strong suits and drawbacks. First things first, it spawned those demons known as "Microtransactions." Secondly, getting loot and characters is RNG based and the game is crammed with useless gak to inflate the items you can get. In terms of good things about it, holy character options. You had at least 40~ different characters with different abilities that synergized with each other in different ways. The difficulty was quite noticeable when switched to the point that if you didn't have a good team, you would get stomped. All in all, it was better than most horde based mp's I've played to date.

On the topic of ME: Andromeda, I saw one gif on Facebook where the Asari with the black mark over her eyes pulls out a Carnifex pistol to shoot some tentacle looking robot and the pistol was backwards in her hand.

Most reviews are simply reporting the issues yet still giving the game ok to good final scores so don't base your opinion on the outliers. In my case, I've watched at least 4 hours of gameplay footage and I've seen bad facial animation, stilted walking animations, and texture pop in dozens of times especially with transitions to and from cutscenes. Perhaps I'm more attentive to it than you but I find it distracting and unacceptable from bioware in 2017 on modern hardware with a massive budget and 5 years of development (unlike in 2007 with ME1 on the 360). I will admit though that passive viewing (along with rewinding to confirm they happened) unlike actually playing brings those issues more to the forefront. The stressing of you playing in no way strengthens your view relative to mine as I'm not referring to anything that requires or is completely dependent upon player interaction; the issues I referred to all happen passively and are the same regardless of whether you have a controller or remote control in your hand. Please note that I am NOT including the videos that purposely highlight the issues but rather normal recorded playthroughs. Would that ruin the game for me? No, absolutely not... but I do think it is a disheartening sign and a step down from the trilogy (especially after the phoned in ending it got).

On the trial the only option when making your character about previous games was whether Shepard was a man or woman. No option to import savegames or anything. So any mention of Shepard or the events of previous games (obviously excluding ME3 as the arks left before the Reaper invasion, possibly with the exception of the planned quarian ark) will be quite generic and not taking into account player choices.

I hadn't considered that there are massive issues with the game I'm playing and maybe I'm just too stupid to have noticed, thanks for that.

I saw a tiny bit (one example of each, specifically) of the first 2 issues, but I haven't seen any texture pop. I wonder if people playing the game are doing so with below spec hardware, so LOD is being limited. I'm playing on a GTX 1080 and a i7-4770K, and the game is installed on a Samsung 850 Pro SSD, so it's been pretty smooth.

Well, I wasn't going to suggest that you came in with an axe to grind, but implying that the 4 times as long as I've spent playing a game is the same as you watching it on youtube and I'm probably too stupid to have noticed it certainly makes me wonder it.

Anyway, you don't like the game, terrific, you saved like $60.

You apparently aren't particularly attentive because I specifically said it absolutely doesn't ruin the game for me (in addition to missing the other relatively more subtle points both in my post and in the game). Even if that wasn't the case, it's simple biology that someone just passively watching who isn't focused on actively playing can devote more attention to other things like the issues I mentioned. No matter. I still plan on getting the game (albeit used/discounted) when I upgrade to a system that can run it later this year.

Since you're played for 16 hours (and like to stress your playing with CAPTIALIZATIONS), what's you're favorite mission so far?

I'm not sure that I can say that I have a favorite so far, yet.

I'm spending a lot of time wandering around, not burning through it - so I haven't yet gotten super far in the main quest line (I assume, I haven't yet started loyalty quests although I just got one). I probably spent about 70 or so hours on ME3, and I'm the guy who scanned every planet in ME1. I'm not in a rush.

This has been my favorite moment so far, though (spoilers obv).

I played through the first level tonight. Seems pretty good. - As usual though, I screwed up the character face design. Super high forehead, hoooo.

Story seems intriguing and interesting enough for me, I like a lot of the exploring aspects and how they feed back into the dialogue.

I will say, I'm kinda concerned the main plotline might end up being a bit too Halo-ey. If the badguys end up unleashing an out of control zombie plague, I'm going to end up being very upset...

I've had that happen too many times in too many games, this time I went with default female Ryder. I don't think she looks too bad. In certain lighting she does, but then so does everyone else in the game. Plus the male Ryder sounds like Nathan Drake in space or something, not into that at all. It's definitely not a bad game, it just isn't great. I think after all this time between ME3 and this people expected more. Plus this game does have a different vibe and feel than the trilogy, in terms of look and style and music. However with the mixed reception we might not see a sequel to this one, and a next Mass Effect game may have an even smaller budget.

Just look at Alien Isolation, it's regarded the best Alien game ever made...and is a better companion to the original movie than the James Cameron sequel IMO...and yet it is not getting a second game. Like it or not I think Mass Effect may be in a tight spot right now.

I'm not sure that everyone expected "more" than the trilogy but I'd definitely agree that they didn't expect less. There are plenty of improvements but then there are also IMO some notable inexplicable letdowns like inability to command or customize squadmates, less options on the Ryder customizer, worse animations, etc. There are some steps back that I can only assume are indicative of a rush job despite them having 5 years to make this. YMMV. It's still a good game seemingly overall according to reviews and a good bioware game (even if their worst in 15 years) is still better than most other company's efforts. That applies to sales as well. What worries me is that Bioware didn't seem to learn much from the ME3 ending fiasco and didn't really take to heart the criticism months ago about largely the same things. Comments about stilted facial animation were brought up last year and they said they were working on it. Eh.

No comment on the spoilers but I'd warn you to stay away from youtube videos to not reveal the plot. As for Beldar Ryder, I'd have to see him to judge. There are some truly hideous Ryders out there as it was apparently a thing on youtube to make them for playthrough videos. One version I dubbed Disco Ronald McDonald.

It should. I've been watching playthroughs and even the low setting options look pretty good overall visually. Now expand that to ultrawide and crank up to high and it should be a treat. The low and medium settings look pretty similar to me personally (except for the lighting and shadows...definitely don't do low there) as do the high and ultra. The biggest jump when I was watching comparison videos was between med to high... that was the most jarring single step IMO.

I doubt it's your fault. The character creator is legit garbage and it's probably my biggest disappointment with the game. I didn't get the Ryder I wanted, I got the least hideous Ryder I could make. I should have just kept the stock character.

Right now Mass Effect Andromeda sits slightly above Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare on Metacritic, ranking-wise. Do you think anyone reasonably believes that the Call of Duty franchise is in trouble?

I think once a franchise gets big enough, they can absorb a less-than-stellar release... look at Final Fantasy 13, or Battlefield Hardline, or Dragon Age 2. I think the idea of the Mass Effect franchise being in trouble is pretty premature, but of course we don't have any sales numbers yet. My gut feeling is they'll be fine.

I've only been playing for a day, but In finished the first big mission on that desert planet so far.. and I haven't seen anything really bad. I think game reviewers are just too critical these days. Some of the animations and facial expressions are stiff sometimes, but almost all games are like that. Story seems fine to me so far too. No issues with any characters really either.

But one thing that I was confused about... did they leave after the events of ME3? Or was it earlier so all of the stuff that happened in ME3 didn't matter? I know it took 600 years to get there, so technically it's after, but do the Andromeda folks even know what happened?

They do not. They left as the events of ME2 were starting to unfold.

One of the Mass Effect devs was kind enough to retweet a fan-created graphic of the timeline for Mass Effect.
