None too happy with gravity.

By the way, do you have trouble with stuff flaking off those CDs?
The shrine looks great.

I bet that that is a fun game.
Given your schedule, when are you gonna play it?

I'll probably never play it, though I've gotten my son into playing a few other games, so maybe....

As for the CDs, I haven't had any problems yet, but only been doing them 6 months or so, I guess we will see together. The primer I use is really good and the super glue has held well.

Dr H wrote:Nice work on the CD terrain, Theo'.
Good job on Chobei, doesn't look like someone that'd take a "moob" joke well.

Jeff, Something I do when using CD's as bases is to cover them, top and bottom, wrapped around, with tissue / PVA. Once dry the CD is captive and works fine to lend stiffness to the base.
I've even joined bits of CD's together (butted up against each other) in one piece of tissue/PVA to make larger bases.
Had no problems with anything flaking, peeling or otherwise falling off.

Yeah, when he's not Robbin the rich he is probably stopping at all the all you can eat sushi stands.

I have that clump foliage as well, Woodland Scenics can be pricey, but it's great quality and a really extensive range (railway modellers are spoilt for choice)

They don't deserve all the cool stuff , but I've been watching videos on how to make my own, and maybe one day....

JoshInJapan wrote:I really like your Test of Honor stuff. That fat samurai reminds me of an old (90's) comic called Fat Ninja...

the CD-based terrain is a nifty idea which I will have to steal.

Steal away, I saw it on a bolt action battle report and thought it was a good idea. We did one of the league contests years ago where everything had to fit on a CD. I made a terribad johnny on the spot.

Well not much right now, maybe more later, but browsing the web and vids I saw some CD fields similar to the pics dave showed earlier where they used door mats, but this guy just glued corrugated cardboard to a CD, wet it a bit with PVA glue to seal the cardboard, painted it to look like tilled soil and added some flock for growing plants. Thought I'd give it a go.

No just waiting for the glue to dry....

The guy made a few of them for Kensei (another samurai skirmish game), and then labeled each field with the Kanji symbol for the type of crop. I'm not going that far, but if this works out well we will have different plant types in different fields.

Well just a quick stop by, off to work after watching my sons volleyball team having their first game of the year. They won 2 of the three matches . Best part is he seamed to have fun which he normally won't show. He is on a team called the Eagles so of course I started rooting from the side lines "Ka-Ka-Kawesome!" He was well and truly embarressed. His older sister started making hand gestures with wings flapping too , he is never going to live it down. The other parents joined in for some fun with it.

On a modeling note, I saw that warlord had sarissa-precision craft some wooden katana to use a sword rulers. Such an awesome idea that I looked for my Shogun board game Samurai swords from ages ago.

Sadly they are not the right size . The regular movement is 6", and mounted troops are 9" and cautious moves are 3". So the saris said-precision ones have a 6" blade and 3" handle for 9" total. These look better, but not practical. I want to use them somehow.

Well I wasn't feeling crafty today. One of the sites I found from years ago showed a guy making feudal Japanese houses, so I'm imitating his builds with a bit of my own design to it.

"Git of my rice paddy you stinking kids"

I did not know that they used to put rocks on the roof because of wind. It keeps the roof slats from blowing away.

Insides of buildings are not used in Test of Honor, so I might just paint the door open, but black inside. I might also do a couple window frames the same way.

I also need to fill the walls up to the roof. Maybe using the brush tips like thatching. Any suggestions. The smaller building will just be a poorer persons house.

I have seen his blog and have forgotten it too. Thanks for the reminder. I also found a blog where they used actual wash cloth cut into strips and then PVA'd to make roofing that I might give a try.

I'm afraid I've been painting only a few figs, mainly characters, but I will do a group shot in about a week to update the monthly painting contest.

shasolenzabi wrote:Theo has been busy! dragons and beasts, terrain, and samurai and support troops oh my!

Yeah I've been squeezing a few projects out, nothing to rival your Klingon force though.

Well, cormadepanda mentioned using paper and I remembered having some really heavy stock (110-140lb) paper that has a linen texture to it, so I decided to try that on the walls here. I also put the front door on this place too. After that I just washed the wood with agrax earthshade to get a nice tone.

I have to trim all the side boards roughly even.

And then paint the walls a soft sand color too.

Close up of the linen texture. What do you think of it?

I think at the scale it really helps with breaking up straight flat surfaces.

Well I finished a smaller poor mans shack to fit in with the larger hut.

Now just waiting on painting the little roof hold em down rocks.

Should I hit the walls with a wash? If so do I use the same agrax earthshade that I did on the wood or go different?

More progress. Made a Torii gate yesterday.

It got its first coat of paint last night, along with the columns I got from Massive Darkness.

Also built the base for a third building in the village. It's larger and has an actual raised platform off the ground, so it must be someone special's home. Maybe a samurai . Also chopped some scrubber pads into the shape of the fence pieces from Test of Honour. They have been primed brown just now though instead of the multi green.

Also, what could these spare paint pots be sacrificed for? Wait and see I guess....

The hinges have been roughly cut too.

Fantastic Theo! LOVE the houses! That craft wood is fairly cheap! I bought a stash of it years ago for a 15mm Wild West game I never got around to. The CD shape would work well for a rice paddy, just hide the edge of the CD with an elevated lip of dirt and grasses the farmers walk on! That lip will work to hold in any sort of water effect or clear gloss you wanted to pour in after planting the rice stalks

Also earlier, you were talking about green bushes....this would be an easy way to utilize your airbrush spraying some green or yellow inks/washes to sort of dye the brown bristles. Really soak em, then let them dry, should have a nice translucent green glaze over the neutral brown/tans once it's dry. Just like wheat, or corn, or soybeans that we are used to seeing in the Midwest, rice gets brown when its time to harvest too.

Thanks Dave , I tried to find the same craft sticks at Walmart yesterday, but of course they changed it again . Oh well I'll need to try some new stuff anyway. As for rice paddies, those will come soon, maybe not on a CD, but they will come and I'll mess with some water effects at the same time.

Well the paint pots were going to be the core of haystacks....they still might become those, but for right now I don't have any more spray adhesive, so they go to the box of shame(one of them )
I had undercoated them with GW XV-88 paint and then I need the spray adhesive to hold on tiny cut pieces of coco moss liner. I bought a 24" diameter coco liner from Home Depot for $4.88. It's just taking a long time to cut it all down to size. Some of the rougher sized pieces I rolled together to make some hay bales.

The upright ones are the beginning of haystacks without the pot. I need to still build them out further.

Took the idea from terrain tutor, but not using the air dry clay. That's what I was going to use the pots for.

Wow.
You are building a world of cd rice fields and houses with gates and columns for a game that you won't play?
Where do you keep all of this terrain?
Oh, right - you live in Missouri - big land there.
I miss that...
We live in the city here.
I would come home and the wife would have it all in a box at the door on Wednesday night with the recycling and a scowl.

BTW that haystack idea is great.
Those hay bails look great, too.
Great idea.

Seeing those pots brown, they look like the only idea that I could come up with - big pots for kimchi and I guess in Japan miso (?) (fermented soybean?).

I'll play Test of Honour eventually. Even if it's just against myself. But it WILL be my first complete board of terrain (barring my 5 sets of Necromunda). As for space I pretty much have the entire basement to myself except when others are doing their laundry. I made a tv and WIi area for the kids and a area for my wife's sewing machine, but no one utilizes it.

I was actually wanting to make archery targets out of the coco moss, kind of like the hay bales I have their, but I'll have to slice them into thin patties. A project for another day as I'm about to leave for work.

P.S. No one wants to know but while I was making these the cat was under my chair engaging in chemical warfare. He tried to gas me out

Don't look at my desk then. Plenty of other projects that haven't been shown and would boggle the mind to no end. It's why I'm the way I am .

Well as Jeff had pointed out eventually I'll need to play this game, so I'll need some adversaries since it's unlikely that I'll find someone with their own samurai just chilling and sippin sake. So I dug in the box of clan war doom and pulled out random crab clan berserker dude, who has become a dishonorable crane clan pansy . I figure the blues and whites will work nice against my lion clan yellows and browns. He can be a samurai or a sword master I guess.

I went with an aged looking hair coloring as he can be an old master or retired samurai.

Aged or not he still likes showing off his badonkadonk

And why would anyone show off the hip like this . Good thing he still has nice muscle tone or I'd drop him off at Walmart so he could fit in better.
