I went and bought a can of Army Painter White matte primer from my FLGS. I sprayed some models in my basement, (70 degreesF) and when I came back an hour later, It had craked, and melted the details of my Space Wolves. The plastic was very soft and malubale. Have any of you guys had this problem before?

Bad part is, Im down four Space wolves.

I had this problem with a can of the Dragon Red. Since then I have been worried to use it which is a shame as I have many of their colour sprays.

Now I just undercoat with GW undercoat then airbrush the colour I need over the top

Did you shake the can first? I'm guessing you got propellant instead of paint.

I'd contact the manufacturer and find out what's up, see if they'll help you out.

Yeah I shook it for 1:30 seconds like they said on the can. Im going to ask my FLGS if they will refund my money, and maby replace my models. I know it sounds rude to do so, but I have never experianced this with Army Painter Primers before.

I have gone through 4 cans of army painter.

The only problem I have had was when I used it first I applied it too thick and it filled some detail.

That would would be the only bad experience I had but ya no cracks ever.

I have heard of some friends had problems with primer cracking but that was when it was extremely humid.

Wow, I've never heard of that before!

Bit worrying given that their products are tailor made for minis and gw minis in particular!

Think army painter themselves would want to hear about this, maybe theres a bad batch out there?

Same here. I've used their sprays for 2-3 years and I used their pure red a lot. I've probably used a dozen cans of various colours. Pics would be interesting. Did you just put the models together will polysterene cement and spray, same as you would any other figure or did you wash the sprues first or...?

They were painted in something else first? That's probably your problem, the paints have reacted with each other. You need to strip the figures or know the base coat is safe with the next layer of paint.

Yes, that seems the most likely explanation!

Only one was primered with AP dragon red. the rest got red on them from me handeling them after they dried. I had spay on my hands so it showed up on the models.

My vote is that the primer was put over an already painted surface....In my 20 years of model building experience I have never seen this happen. That does not mean that it could happen, it just seems to me that there is an element missing from the story here.

You should definitely contact Army Painter directly and be prepared to provide any code numbers from the can. I've done investigations into customer complaints at a high-tech company (not paint but consumables for laboratories), and from that perspective, something this unusual reeks of customer shenanigans. (Please note, I'm not saying you did anything. Just remember- extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. If they get multiple reports from independent sources this all corroborates your experience, but the reporting of something this weird, the first question is did the customer do something or is it the product?).

Even if you spray straight accelerant it should be neutral/nonreactive (have done it myself when the bottom of can was reached mid-spray). If there was something that degrades plastic as a normal ingredient, this would be really counterproductive for use on highly detailed plastic minis.

So, what jumps out at me is that there is a possibility of a misformulation in the paint, i.e. something is in there that should not be. There is stuff that melts minis, of course, most notably acetone (you can see examples in stripping threads here). I know there are any number of other chemicals that will do so... there are glove compatibility charts for a reason when in a lab! Their supplier may have messed up when batching the paint.

Please note, this means that Army Painter would need to investigate on their end. You need to let them know EXACTLY what these models have been subjected to. If you have purchased second hand, stripped, etc the minis then this info is very necessary for the investigation.

Do you have any sacrificial, New on Sprue minis you could spray and film before/after video for? Or just use sprue? This would be interesting to see... and would likely be interesting for Army Painter, as well.

Anyway, sorry to hear about your minis, that totally stinks! Please do let us know what you find out!

(Edit, sorry, forgot to mention but it is really hard to see from the photos if this is just a really thick spray job that gunked up the details or if this is a thin spray job that melted it. As a neutral observer, the most likely explanation is that too much paint was used. This simply means the situation you've described is not coming across in the photos! ).

That is very big problem you got there.
Ask Army Painter for money.
However, truth is that a Squad from GW Special Forces stormed inside your house and ruined them.

The blue is the color of the plastic.

The blue is the color of the plastic.

Can't be, GW never cast these in blue plastic. Something just isn't right about this. The only plastic marines made in blue of that colour were in the Space Crusade box, and that ain't them.

That cracking in the paint, I've seen the same thing when we used a Plastikote gloss paint on top of some other undercoat. That or conditions were very cold/damp.

Weren't they also a darker blue?

Not to mention that looks like the missile launcher Blood Angel from the second edition starter box. Should be grey.

Edit: Though actual research reveals this.
