One Punch Man a d My Hero Academia are a couple of recent stand outs with more than one season under their belt. Otherwise anime is no different than any other medium. There’s tons and tons of tv and movies constantly coming out. I only find a fraction of it appealing. But everyone finds a different segment of the whole appealing, so they just make what they can.
Hero academia is alright. I like the action animation style.
One Punch man is also good fun. A solid delivery by madhouse.
It seems their output has somewhat slumped. Black Lagoon/hajime no ippo was a masterpiece. But It seems for every decent anime produced we get 20 garbage tier cutsey fairy school girl/ Mobile phone game advertisment.
Ohh well hope the future has some awesome stuff in store.

I tend to take a 1-2 year hiatus from watching anime once Ive cought up on one piece and watched whatever else Ive missed.
Now, is it me or has the quality taken a nose dive down a sewer??? There seems to be 100's of some mobile game based adaptaion chinese knock of anime flooding in and they are all absolute trash fire tier garbage posing as anime..
I d have a pretty old school(one could say conservative) taste.
Apart fromt the classic Bleach & co. I love anything mad house gets involved in and hajime no ippo has to be one of my Favourites. But lately it seems half the stuff getting pumped out isint even drawn, its some sort of cell shaded rendering.
Are the years of Darker than black and FMA just gone now?
Does anyone have any recomendations and I've missed something?
To be blunt you've got Rose Tinted Glasses the size of the moon on. Most anime has always been crap. Most of ANYTHING has always been crap. You simply remember the gems more strongly. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturgeon%27s_law

I Have to disagree. I went back through the website history on the site i use to stream today back to about 2012, and the quality of the subject matter on the whole has slumped significantly since then. Obviously this is my opinion and maybe I dont see the forest through the trees through the moon sized rose tinted glasses indeed..

For anyone who wants, GundamInfo (Gundam's official YouTube channel) is currently hosting all 6 episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam: the Origin, a prequel series to Gundam 0079 that focuses on Char Aznable and the Zabi family. It's a pretty good series, if super slow for the first two episodes (things pick up in episode 3).

This is part of the reason I've stuck to films as of late, leaving long run shows behind.
Not counting Jojo, I can only think of one or two shows I enjoyed watching over the past few seasons. But in terms of the feature length stuff, there has been a lot of good gems.
Beh, you whippersnappers. Anime hasn't been the same since the 80's and 90's. Bubblegum Crisis (the original, not that 2028 remake thing), Gunbuster, Patlabor, Slayers, Trigun... THOSE are good anime.
GENERATION 8: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

Man I wish I could get into Jojo.. I tried but could not get behind it. Maybe its a classic case of if you go 5 episodes deep you get it
Recently found: Kimetsu no Yaiba
Its 7 episodes in at the time of writing but I think its really good. It reminds me a little bit of the original FMA.. The right dose of seriosuness and dark.

Youngling, please. The original Astroboy, Gegege no Kitaro and Dororo are the best anime.

If you want a good 60's anime check out Ribon no Kishi. Still holds up imho.
Maybe I'm an anime noob, but I'm at about episode 45 of Black Clover now and I'm absolutely loving it! Asta has gone from annoying to inspirational and I like how they are developing the whole of the Black Bulls not just having the main character do everything (looking at you Dragon Ball Z...)
I feel like the series has really found its groove right now. At the beginning it felt like they were rushing things with events happening at a breakneck pace, now they have slowed things down and we're getting some proper character development.

It's good you like it, but the only reason you like it is because, as you admit, you're new to anime and haven't actually seen the good stuff. Everyone thinks the first anime they watch is the best anime ever because there is no context.
Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter and My Hero Academia all do the shounen tropes better. Even Naruto does it better once you cut out all the filler.
Then there are shows like Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Kill la Kill, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Steins;Gate, Bakemonogatari and the various good Gundams that really show you the best of the medium.

To be fair there’s nothing really bad in Black Clover. It’s competently written and well drawn/animated with flashy characters and okay fights. Really the only flaw is how derivative it is. For me watching BC is like, Naruto when did you end up in Fairy Tail and why does everyone have spell book Zanpaktos?!
Black Clover is incredibly derivative even more so than the derivative series it derives itself from. But if you’ve never seen any of those, there’s nothing else really wrong with it. It’s a good series and came out right as all of the others were ending.
BC Iisnt bad. But i dont think its particulary good either. Its a bit run of the mill mediocre but I still watch it.
If you like the shounen type there are plenty things that will rock your world. Im sort of jelous because ive seen pretty much everything and I wont get that first time experiance back. Now someone needs to invent mind wipe so i can watch bleach over and over again.
Like do you guys remmeber Goku going super sayian for the first time? (I think it took about 4 epsiodes ) do you remember that sheeeeeeet!?
My journey started with DB/DBZ when I was 10/11 which is abbout 20 years ago.
I intiialy wrote off bleach after first 3 minutes because the first episeode starts with rukia and I was like "pfff I dont want to watch an anime about some same ass saylor moon type chick stuff" Obviously watched it all since and how wrong was I .
Have definitely learned to set my expectations low when going into new series which meant ive watched some great stuff I would not have.
Heres a question: Which FMA did you guys like more? The original pre shambala movie? Or brotherhood?
I remmeber the original having a lot more sinister undertones and being more tragic.

Kroem wrote: Haha well it looks like I chose to watch them in the right order, I wouldn't have enjoyed Black Clover if I watched the other ones first!
TBH I remember Bleach and Naruto being popular back in school, but even after watching a few episodes I could never get into them.
I wouldn't say that you would not enjoy Black Clover, I am saying the enjoyment would be tempered by the context of other series that set the standards Black Clover is derivative of. It's why a lot of 70's and 80's anime "hasn't aged well", because people watch it and see nothing "new", when they WERE the new that everything else splintered off from.
Netflix is currently hosting Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as its compilation film, and the "ending" movie End of Evangelion. It's old stuff (and super duper maximum angsty), but it is an anime classic so, if you're an enthusiast and have never seen it before it's currently available nice and easy for anyone with a Netflix account.

An unfortunate problem of being a niche genre back when the medium was having those new types of shows but now being mainstream and having new shows just ripoff the old ones.
Older Anime tend to have much stiffer dialogue, though all animated shows at the time tended to have fairly stiff corny dialogue too, and when you have that plus translation hiccups its a recipe for something thats going to feel very dated. Though at this point thats all part of the charm.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines
Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

HOLD UP. They did what?! Man I would have put money on changes in the dub being about making it more accurate since the old dub would have had a more Americanized localization than the dubbing houses do today. They actually took it further away?
Dang, now I may have to consider showing it subbed to my friends instead. Although they've all seen the rebuilds so the gay scenes will be familiar enough not have any changes matter...

Honestly even the subs aren't super great cause the series indulges so much in heavy abstractions and purposefully confusing (and meaningless) esoteric rambling.
As time has gone on I look back at Eva less and less fondly. The series and story are an utter mess, purposeful drivel thrown together by a creator who at the time utterly hated his work and seemed hellbent on taking it on on others. He still seems that way from time to time.
Really the only thing I can recommend about the franchise is that the fight scenes are even to this day, top notch, the memes are still hilarious, and Auska vs the Mass Production Evas in End of Evangelion might be one of the most epic anime battles ever put on screen and is worth watching even if it has a gakky ending.

This thread has managed to make me feel old and young at the same time. I saw my first anime in the uk when channel 4 showed Akira at 2 in the morning shortly after it was released.
After that they showed a couple more random titles then I saw nothing else until we got satellite tv and the original SciFi channel used to play anime movies on a Sunday night for 4-5 hours.
One of the first few I saw on there were Ninja Scrolls and Venus Wars which still remain guilty pleasures.
Your last point is especially laughable and comical, because not only the 7th ed Valkyrie shown dumber things (like being able to throw the troopers without parachutes out of its hatches, no harm done) - Irbis
