***New stuff after pic of Plate Armour! about half way down!

That stands for 'Warhammer Ancients Battles' (which is an experimental game system designed with no Space Marines or Necrosphinx at ALL, this explains why it is almost unheard of..) and 'Hundred Years War' (which was a series of wars against France {lasting about 116 years obviously} where one group of Normans beat up another for the right to rule France)..

I started building this army by getting lots of cheapo boxes of 1:72 Zvezda kits and creating a basic army to play games with. I also got a box of the beautiful Perry miniatures WoTR (War the ROSES, not Ring) which are pretty much the right era (as they started 2 years after the 116 years of conflict of the HYW, say what you like about the Medieval English but they liked a scrap or two).

I have finally started to paint these guys and wanted to start a blog to see what people think..

I already have an IG Blog, (clink in sig) which you may or may not have strayed across, I will return to it at some point..

I wanted this army to be painted to nice standard and less speed painted than the IG, more like my Marines (which I will do a BLOG for, probably nearer the release of 6th/new SM Codex).

This is my standard bearer I did quite a while ago now..no transfers were used in the production of this model..

For £15 (now £18) I got 20 Billmen (halbardiers) and 20 Archers, the quality is excellent too. I assembled them as 17 Bills with a Hero in Full Plate, an ASB above and 20 Longbowmen, the English superweapon (and one spare full plate guy).

I wanted the troops to be in retinues, and looked about for nice colour schemes/heraldry, I ended up taking inspiration from Medieval Total War II! with its red/yellow colour scheme. So my first minor lord got these colours..

More rankers..

All the rankers

Unit champion, Earl of somewhere or other...not decided yet..

Billman, Herald (musician), and minor hero in full plate and poleaxe.

Standard bearer, will have banner of minor lord above..

I have done more and pics are in the Gallery, I'll do commentries on them soon, I might do some pics of the cheapy place holder models too..

See what you think!! Maybe you'll fancy trying something a little bit different too!!

FOR THE EMPRAH!!!

Have to admit I keep on planning to grab some of these for an Empire army after seeingthese it's earmarked as my next big project.

I really recommend them, really nice detail. But, they are 'realistic' scale not 'heroic' so the weapons/heads etc aren't really compatible, I just got some cheapo Brettonian archers off eBay as a possible rank filler and I'll so some size comparison pics for you..

Further work on the Bills,

Beginning of heraldry on unit champs shield, I decided on a boar motif.

Any good tips on stubble? I want this guy to have a slight amount.

Beginning of unit standard, more boar..

Pretty much done..

Will post up some more soon..

Honest answer after finishing my Zulus I like realistic scale versus heroic oddly enough it makes them look more heroic to be squaring of against a giant beastman or a lurking brutish orc thats twice their size!

Thanks for the comments, I was reading somewhere that a mix of gray green and brown with the flesh tone is good? I'll have go later..

More stuff..

Nice boar penis, that was how the original I was copying did it..maybe it puts the fear into the enemy better..

Nearly done..

Banner done, the lettering is 'God and King' though it looks to me now like 'God and Republic of Ireland'......It's in french as most of the Aristocracy would still be speaking it, French was also the international language to an extent.

Pretty much finished, I drybrushed the Graveyard soil with a bit of BB and added some static grass, I'm thinking of picking up some of those tufts of grass thingys and maybe those little clumps of flowers to be more awesome..

I've pretty much finished my cannon too I'll do the pics for it soon..

Ah, dear old Michael Boarcock, great fantasy author!

The unit has very nice and subtle colour matchup (very realistic rather than 'Empire-like' which looks a bit circus). Also, the basing is very nice and feels battlefield-like.

I love the Michael Moorcock, especially the Eternal Boarampion series......

Thanks for the comments, I haven't had the time to update this for ages, I have still managed to fit in a bit of painting though..

Here is my shooter..

The kit from 1st Corps Kingmaker models and is for a wheeled model, I've left off the carriage as it makes it look like an earlier type of cannon.

I might make a wagon or something out of these..nice wheels..

The set is £15 and comes with 4 crew and this little trestle gun too, if I find I can fit it in I might make it up..

The crew, nice and characterful though slightly larger than 28mm. The Mrs says they are the 3 stooges..I like that they look a bit incomptetant as Guns of this era where pretty dangerous to the user. My cannon have often lived up to this, for 3 games in a row it miss fired on the first shot with various funny results.

Here are some finished shots..

Added mud and soot to the crew and gun, hard to not add so much as too obscure all the painting..

I'm quite pleased with it now, it seems to have improved it's performance too. I had a games last week where it managed to hit a stonethrower twice in a row and destroy it and then sqaurely hit the opposing BSB, passed his look out sir though :(, and then bounce through a unit of Pratorians killing 5!, not bad when cannon in WAB cannot pivot and fire, they only shoot staright ahead and any movement requires it to miss a turn of firing..

I'll post up some more stuff hopefully sooner, I've done about 10 of an archer unit and tweaked the banner from the halbardiers too as I wasn't happy with it...

See you later!

This is the banner now:

I added a border as it looked too plain..

Standard bearer got his stubble, I did a mix of Elf flesh, Scorched brown, Dark Angel green, Codex Grey, water in 4:1:1:1:1 approx. He also got some mud splats..

New shot of the unit as a whole, I think it looks a lot better, the previous banner looked a bit too dull..

Just a quick update to show progress on the Longbowmen. Nearly done now just the command strip of 5 to finish..

Rear rank

Front rank

These are nearly done now, they will have a simple St George Cross pennant.

Close ups

I've ordered another box of the Perry Bow and Bills which I plan to combine with the spare bows from this kit and make them all into bowmwn. This will give me 60 in 3 x 20 which is what I generally use at 2.5K. I'm also looking forward to seeing some more pics of the upcoming Fireforge mounted sergeants box as that might make some nice Hobilars (light cav) as I use 6 of them at the mo and have to proxy.

Love the work here. The static grass adds a lot to the models and your freehand work on the banner and shield are top notch.

I'm starting to look into WAB as a league is forming here in Texas, Looking at Saxons + Vikings at 2800pts and no later than 1200 A.D. so I'm going to be painting something like 300 models.

Do you have an online resource for models or army lists?

I'm using models from Wargames Factory:

Hmelrose: the place to be, such as it is, for wab resources is:

http://wabforum.co.uk/

They have lots of varient lists for all sorts of time periods but most of these have been superceded by the new AoA2. I don't see much of it but I think guys do post up lists for critique and ask about model companies etc. The rate of posts can be a bit 'glacial' but people are generally really helpful. Martin Gibbins posts on there too (the writer of most things WAB for any uninitiated) and he is pretty good at answering questions.

He recently posted a mini FAQ/Errata for AoA2 so check it out if you haven't already.

http://wabforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=120&t=10828

Those models look pretty ace I've forwarded a link to a friend who is considering starting a force for that period, def the best multiparts I've seen for Saxons/Vikings (possibly the only?!).

Good luck on the 300, post up the results, I'd like to see them painted..PM or notify me in here if you do..

Lego: Thanks!

Just finished the command strip and banner, will try to get some pics soon. I'm still waiting for the next box of Perry's so have undercoated a IG tank in the meantime! I may be going to Salute this year and if so might get a box of Fireforge mounted sargeants as they are supposed to be released there, still waiting on some more pics to see if they'll meet my standards...

Cheers..

Here's some finished pics of the Longbows..

Family shot..

I'll be getting a new box of Perry's soon but there will be a bit of a gap before I get round to painting them most likely..I intend to make all 40 guys into Bowmen, 20 in green and white with a pennant like above and a Heraldric banner of a lord (and the Lord himself in fullplate)..the other unit in heavier armour and the kings colours of red and blue quartered...I've been toying with the idea of rebuilding my ASB as well, he just looks a bit blah to me now...

See you soon!!

There will be some updates on the IG blog in the meantime, link in sig if you swing that way too, started on my Vanquisher..

*casts raise dead (thread)*

I've managed to complete (as much as any army is complete) my IG army (link in sig) and have carved a niche in my (now severely limited) modelling schedule (before the Space marine release) to do some more of these guys.

For my birthday (like 7 months ago) I got a goodly pile of Perry's miniatures to play with (loot pic to follow). I just love their Medieval range, the kits are interesting and well thought out with great historical accuracy. One thing that is annoying is that they are slightly the wrong era, too late, it doesn't matter much for the commoners but the posh guys armour is slightly too advanced. I really like the late stage full plate harness, especially the Gothic style so I'm willing to make allowances.

Who wouldn't love this?

For now I'll just show a few snaps of the 2 units of Longbowmen (yes more) I'm working on..

Command group unit A. This is primarily made of the 'Bows & Bills' kit with extra heads from the new 'Mounted Men at Arms' and 'Mercenaries' sets. The hammer on the standard bearer and axe on the musician are from the new MMaA set, finally more hand weapons! They are so tiny (as realistic scale) that you can't just use and Empire (etc) weapon. Note classic GW champion pose.

Remainder of front rank, all reloading.

Second rank with arms repositions with GS to be firing over the heads of the front rankers.

Blue tacked command strip of unit B, mostly from the Mercenaries kit, you can now buy the command sprues separately which means I can finally get different musicians etc.

More sometime soon, let me know what you think!

Here's my loot picture. Another box of Bows & Bills, I'll combine them with some spare bow arms from the original set I got and make this new one into 40 Longbowmen (it's supposed to make 20 bow and 20 bills which is what I made with the last set. The dead sexy new cavalry kit, Mounted Men at Arms. I'll make 8-10 heavy Cav out of these. The pile of metal models is 6 medium/light cavalry from the Perry Agincourt to Orleans range. There is one sprue which is the Command sprue from the Mercenaries set. Finally a pile of bases donated by Alex K as the supplied ones are a weird small size.

Here's a group shot I missed earlier.

Sounds great, are pics? What scale 15mm?

Started a bit of painting, I'm doing this unit as kings men so they'll have quartered red and blue jupons, maybe with the Lions and Flyrs de lys but I'm not sure how masochistic I'm felling. I'm trying to keep some areas consistant to link the units such as all minor clothing is in shades of brown, red as a main theme and several (about 1:5) guys with white jupons bearing the St George cross in all units.

See what you think.

Yeah 15mm; I have no pics at the moment, but I may start a thread for them when I've painted a few more...

I tried painting the King's (Edward IIIs to be specific) heraldry in 15mm... It was reasonably successful Took fething ages though!

I like the consistency you've managed so far. In mine, each individual is painted differently (maybe that's why they're taking so long )

I think you should at least attempt the proper heraldry, you did a great job with the boar!

Yes do I'd like to see them, not seen much at 15mm.

Did you like my crack at Edward III heraldry BSB above? I'm thinking of making my BSB into the unit standard bearer for my foot knights (whenever Perrys get round to finishing that kit), I'd like to tart it up a bit and re do the bearer a bit.

Painting each 15mm at a time?

I did attempt the heraldry on the troopers, there is a lot in the way so don't have to paint that much of it. I'll get these 5 mostly done and do some more shots....... mostly

I think they're coming out well, I'm glad I attempted the Edward III livery as I think it look nice. I'll need to finish the basing (I think I'll wash the Graveyard with some Scorched this time as the previous bases look a little 'sandy' then add some tufts, static grass and dinky flowers) and do a banner (Planning a standard St. George cross pennant and maybe a sub banner of the same or more Edward III).

The unit of Longbows is pretty much done now, I'll try to do some nice pics soon. I've started on my small unit of medium cavalry here:

These are Perry Miniatures 'Agincourt to Orleans' range mounted sergeants. I wanted them to have bucklers and I tried out the shield bosses that come with the ancient skeleton sprues but decided these were too small (seen above). The infantry box (Perry Miniatures 'Bows and Bills') comes with very few and I wanted the archers to be equipped with them and also only combined with a sheathed sword:

So to multiply them I decided to greenstuff cast it. I pressed the above (coated with a thin layer of sunflower oil) into a lump of GS..

Once it was cured I popped out the master ready to be used on a Longbowmen. Then I rolled a ball of GS and pressed it into the mold after coating it with a thin layer of oil.

When semi cured I popped it out and did another (ooooh errr), some were a bit warped (the top two were binned) but I was able to get 4 useable ones.

The unit champion had his spear replaced with a spear tip off the Perry 'Mercenaries' command sprue which makes a nice big sword. I like how the unit looks now and have started the painting...

More later..

Howdy

Sorry for the delay in posting I've had loads on. I did squeeze in some painting however. There are more pics in the gallery but I'll post them up here and annotate them as I get the chance.

Just a quickie today, some more horsemen..

The back 3 horsemen nearing completion. I'm doing them in red and white so they are similar to the other units but not the same. Red being the recurrant theme/linking colour. My next unit of bowmen will also be in red and white and will have the noble who owns the bowmen and these horsemen. I'm painting these units as retinues of various lords.

Front guys, only base coated, the unit champion has a heavy sword instead of a spear (in true unit leader style) which is a speartip glued into his hand. I think the GS cast bucklers are looking alright and will do some more for the next unit of bowmen.

More progress. Based now and the front rank has been base coated, I think I'll paint the guy front right's horse black as brown with the brown armour is too.....brown. It's odd painting cavalry again as it's been years (probably 13 or so since I last painted my now mothballed Wood Elves). I'll try to do some nice details such as the Greys being 'dappledy' and some 'blazes' more pics to follow. Any good horse painting resources?

Ta for now.
