Awesome start, can't wait to see it completed! It's especially helpful for me because I recently became interested in FOW

Cheers, I am not claiming to be a Guru but I do want some of the other FOW players to rip this article apart and add to it. To make it a bit more objective, at the moment it's a bit too much of my opinion and we need to work together to dial it down a bit.

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest!

Excellent article. I would recommend more starter lists for the other nations. The German list is excellent. A fast build army which is alot of fun to play. I love seeing my opponents face when you set down 5 Tigers in front of him. I do hope this gets pinned.

Well if you guys can throw some suggestions for start lists into the ring i'll happily include them.

Great article mwnciboo - thanks so much. Just what I was looking for as I consider jumping in with two friends.

Much better than the Flames of War website, which I must say is terrible. Its indexing is bad and its impossible to find anything.

Anyway, I did come away with a few questions left unanswered. Here they are:

1) Are all the compilation books compatible with the new 3rd edition ruleset? If not, how can I tell which are and which are not?

2) It sounds like two friends and I are interested, but this creates a problem - two of us won't really be able to play against each other. Are there any forces which can represent both the Axis and the Allies? I'm thinking:

  • French - are there Vichy forces? (I play French in Axis Allies Naval Miniatures for this reasons - can play as Axis or Allies).

  • Late War Italian?

  • Early Polish - could fight both the Russians and the Germans?

  • 3) Axis and Allies Miniatures are 15mm - can they be used for armor? Is this cheaper? Is this frowned upon in tournaments?

    Thanks!

    Mez

    Great article.

One thing I would add is how to get started if there is no gaming store that plays FOW.

    step one- find a buddy
    step two- get Achtung
step three- play whats in achtung
Step four decide who is going to be German and who is going to be british/ american
Step five split open fire (now you have a rule book for each of you)
Step six- make a gaming table
    etc

    something like that.

Saw you mentioned Plastic Soldier Company for Russians, but they make tons of great tanks for Germans, British, and Americans too.

Zvezda would also be a good choice for "cheap" ways to get into the hobby.

Great artical, was a good read, just getting into FOW, and have the open fire set, along with some PSC tigers ( a bargin at £20). Also picked up a couple of Zvezda 251 half tracks for £2.75 each.
i plan to build up both armies in the OF box set, useing the 11th armoured div PDF from Battlefront, but not sure what list to use for the germans.

Zvezda, yes and no. You only get the Vehicle with Plastic Soldier you get lots of spares and extra's and can make other marks. Zvesda is extremely basic, and if you are on a Very tight budget the way to go. If you afford a little more you gain spares and upgrade parts which allow you to customise and add character to your platoon.

Use the Generic lists for now, get on EASYARMY start an account and then usthe free v3 books. Unlock any others for like $1 or $2 each is the best way. If you really want the Books then buy them but for the price you can get 20 - 30 Books unlocked from Easy army.

i know this is an old post and people will complain for necroing it, however, it is important to note that some detail given on forums, groups and youtube vids does change and does not get updated. for example open fire ox set contents have changed since the beasts of war video was made and the vid to this day still has not been updated nor a new video uploaded to youtube, second the dice tine sets are OOP and other than fleabay you wont find one and the harder it is to find the more expensive it will be and you can count on a purchase price between 50 and 550 per one set based on rarity, condition and if it is factory sealed, as an example the hitler jugend dice tin set complete but opened you can figure 30 to 50 ( factory sealed 30 to 80) depending on seller while the 505 schwere PzAbt, or the SS set ( the one with the ss in the shield on the dice and tokens) still factory sealed could be listed for anywhere between $350 US and $650 us.
