Well I figure doing a blog will help me get some feedback, which in turn helps me get more mini's done.

First up is a WIP shot of an Inquisition Stormtrooper with a sculpted cobblestone base.

The next is the first finished Triarch Praetorian. I know most people say these guys suck on the table but I usually have great luck with these kind of units. I spent a lot of time on him and learned a lot, hopefully the rest will be just as good but take less time.

The last is a WIP of the first of my monoliths. It's almost done.

Any Q&C are welcome, and constructive criticism is always appreciated, I am always looking to improve.

A few nights ago I discovered a use for some oil paints that have been sitting in my paint drawer ever since I first started.

The magical paint in question is Kustom Kolor Chrome. Sadly, it's out of production and finding a bottle is a nuisance but not impossible.

Here you can see the effect on the green armor areas as well as the blue shoulder socket to your left. It really highlights the model in a metallic way and the chrome sort of blends into the green naturally, unless I apply it too thickly.

I have a total of 100 warriors to paint and because of this little discovery I am genuinely excited about seeing them all done and on the table.

Work done on a squad of warriors yesterday. Got the bases, Gauss rods to finish as well as the eyes.

Two different light hues on two different shots here. Will try to finish these guys today and get to another squad of either the same or something else.

An Immortal I am working on. He's one of the old metal ones, and they still hold up very well in terms of looks. The new plastic ones are a tad better IMO but these guys I already had, so will use them.

I have ten of them. I am going to do something other than red for the painted grilles/power lines as I prefer something a tad simpler for basic troops. I think the red rods are there to stay thouygh, but might go with blue for the warriors above.

On these guys the green shoulders are highlighted with oil paints and the head is done in pure oil paint. Still working out certain parts of his scheme but looking good so far I think.

Some small tweaks to these guys is all they need. Decided on the blue rods after some advice from fellow painters.

Some cleanup left on the immortal then mass painting on the rest of them.

Don't know if those looking at this thread have noticed that a few of my bases are custom. Been playing with that, throwing bits and bobs on some and sculpting others.

Some sculpted bases to look at as well. Very fun to do

Today I received:
One Converted Dreadknight
1 Hector Rex
31 Dark Elf Assassins (used for Death Cult Assassins)
60+ Necron Warriors
2 Lords
1 Destroyer Lord
1 Celexus Assassin
1 Callidus Assassin
Various number of scarabs
4 Necron Pariahs (may use them as lychguard)

I have been working on my scarabs lately. I don't like how they don't look like a swarm so I bunched a lot of them up together on one base. Looks really good I think, though we will see once they are all painted. They have the old metal ones on them as well as the plastic, but don't have any forgeworld ones yet. Will get those at some point.

Got some fluff in my head for my necrons and Inquisition, more on that later.

Hey man I like your base sculpting, looks sweet.

I agree with your friends too the blue looks a lot better than the red IMO. It lets the red eyes standout more.

Thanks! The bases are rather simple and are helping me learn to sculpt a bit. They will all be used at some point until I find some that I think are worthy to sell.

This Dark Elf Assassin will be used as a death cult assassin. He's not done, I got to mute down the cloak highlights and finish his blades and other details, but so far so good. What you see here was done in an hour, base and all so very happy with him so far.

Extremely happy with how this guy is turning out, especially the cartoon black cloak and the flesh on the head.

Got 30 more of him to do, he didn't take more than an hour and a half thus far.

1 scarab swarm is done as well, but don't have any pics of that yet.

Holy smokes, I love the cloak on that Death Cult Assassin! I have never seen earth-and-sky chrome non-metallic-metal done on a cloak before, and I have to say it looks really good!

That's not NMM, It's just Cartoon based coloring. Take a look at a marvel black cloak in a color comic and you'll notice it's very nearly the same as this. I appreciate it though, it's rather simple to achieve if you want the knowledge. Just PM me and I will tell you exactly how it is done.

Actually, i'll just post it here, heck with it.

  • Basecoat Black

  • Highlight raised edges in a mid-blue

  • Highlight areas where the light will hit most in a very watered down light skin tone (in this case elf flesh)

  • Wash rased areas asureman blue

  • Wash halfway up blue areas in badab black

  • Wash halfway up previous wash in Badab Black

  • Repeat previous step until satisfied (I only needed one since I know how to feather with a brush)

  • Thin down a red until it is very near wash consistency, apply just below the blue areas but not in the deepest recesses. Using a wash doesn't seem to work very well for this step, btw.

  • The entire process can take 10 minutes to an hour depending on skill level.

Got quite a bit done today, the assassin and the immortal are completely finished. Gotta do something with the base of the scarabs and perhaps highlight the red and blue lights better.

Despite having done a bit I haven't really updated this much.

I have kitted out two additional Crypteks by using many bits. No pics yet, those are forthcoming.

I undertook a speed painting challenge at WAMP, didn't place to well on that challenge but the pic for my results are below. I am going to sharpen him up, finish his gems and other details, muddy up his base a tad and then put him up to his ankles in water effects.

finally, I have 80 necron warriors on the table which I am slowly getting done squad by squad. Each squad will have a different colored rod and other minor details painted on so that when I play my oppononet can tell which squad is which.

Need to play around with the NMM on the inquisitor a bit. The Warp Spider has been an ongoing project for a while now and I like how he's turning out, complex process though. Obviously my true metals are far better than my NMM technique thus far but I have a few tricks left to try to make the Inquisitor really stand out.

Now Dakka won't let me upload anything ATM so you'll have to settle for possibly a smaller image.

Small update on the inquisitor orki made for me:

Not happy with how chalky that yellow looks at all, but the ruddy red I will keep playing with some more.

Some progress on the inquisitor. I wanted to see what I needed to fix at this early stage and it looks like I have an overall problem with my paint being chalky. I think I can fix this by adding more pigment to my extremely thinned out paint and just putting less paint on the brush and use the new layering technique I have been working on with this model. Kind of a zenithal highlight technique except it's used during the painting stage. Instead of using a red to make a red highlight I first use an orange and then cover it with red, ect. I then later go over that with orange again and then yellow for what I am hoping is a rich bronzy look. The whole process makes me hopeful and as I figure out how to accomplish what I want I think we will all be pleased with the results.

In order to make this a true bronze the entire highlighting process is going to have to be glazed with brown again. I am hoping that the chalky effect of the highlights become a benefit at that point and not the eyesore it currently is.

Going to be thinking about freehand on the cloak. Might pencil it in first as that has worked super well in the past.

Due to the minimal feedback updates may occur quite a bit less.

Keep in mind - WAMP doesn't allow hot linking from their site. Unless people have seen your images over there (and they are stored in their cache) all they will see are little red 'x's over here (or whichever icon their browser uses for unloaded images).

Anywho - Like what is here though (and there...but like I said, a good portion of people haven't been there - so they won't see it here).

One comment though (and it goes back aways) is that you might want to consider doing something about your assassins ears. Little nip-tuck and they would look more human and less elven.

That comic book shading on the assassin looks really great, bit of a flash back to 90s Batman, it is certainly very striking. I really like the colours on the storm trooper too.

Your inquisitor - have you undercoated him? That grey looks like bare plastic

I really like your scarab base with the Spider on it! Very nicely done!

I second Bruticus' comment, neither your Necron Harbringer or Inquisitor look undercoated but none the less nice work.

They are indeed undercoated, I am using Vallejo Model Air Gray Primer, which changes the color slightly but in the pics makes it look like it's not undercoated.

Thanks for letting me know about hot linking from WAMP Sean, I have been having trouble getting pics up on Dakka the last several times but will try again so everyone else can enjoy the work I am doing.

Because of the rules of the WAMP contest I can't put up a finished pic of Lord Terminus, whom I will finish this weekend hopefully.

After organizing my hobby area quite a bit I was reminded of a few projects I started and never finished. I also have no way to transport half my models so must purchase a way to store these guys.

A rather incomplete list of things you might see in the future:

    Necrons:
    I have 80 warriors, 12 are done
    Trazyn is partially finished.
lots of destroyers and 2 custom heavy destroyers.
    1 regular monolith
    2 heavily converted monoliths
    1 FW pylon
    5 praetorians
    10 metal immortals
    10 scarab bases
catacomb command barge which someone owes me
Plus many future purchases as I love the new kits.

    Inquisition:
    Will redo the assassins scheme
will redo the stormtrooper theme a bit
    1 hector Rex
    2 servitors
1 S. heavy IG tank (can't remember which this is)
    Future purchases

    Eldar:
    6 striking scorpions
    Farseer
    Warlock
    10 Warp Spiders
    Plethora of Dire Avengers
    Wave Serpent
    10 Fire dragons
    1 Wraithlord
    Future purchases

    Daemons
    lots of bloodletters
    3 bloodcrushers
    soul grinder

    custom dreadnight

    Marines: (Salamanders)
    dread
    around 40 tactical
    converted veterans
    2 captains
    5 or so assualt marines
2 Land Raiders someone owes me.
    A few future purchases

    Reaper Death Spectre
    AoW Thunderlord

    Chaos:
    Rhino
    Predator
    24 berzerkers
    chaos lord
    5 terminators
    5 possessed

There are a lot more but that's all I can come up with off the top of my head.
