Hey Dakka,

I’ve been lurking on these forums for a while now, and I’ve been so impressed by not only the quantity of outstanding hobbiests/projects but also the great community spirit, so thought I’d start my own P&M blog to record my 40k related nonsense.

A little bit about me to start with. I guess I’m an unashamed Imperial fanboy, my current project is my BA successor chapter of the Angels Encarmine where I’ve got about 50% of a 1500 point list painted but I’m probably going to end with up 2000 – 3000 points worth of models by the time I’ve finished as I’ve got a few lists penned that I want to be able to run. These guys are going to be the main thrust of the blog at first, but I will eventually be getting around to some terrain making/painting and possibly re-painting my SoB

I don’t know how long these meagre tasks will take me, as I can’t dedicated as much time as I’d like to the hobby since I work full time and study part time (what can I say, I’m a glutton for punishment). However, I’m hoping this blog will keep me motivated to get stuff done (although ironically the taking pictures and posting them will detract from time where I could be painting!). Oh, I’m also not a particularly fast painter and since this hobby isn’t particularly cheap I tend to squeeze as much ‘hobby’ out of it as possibly; hence why I magnetise pretty much every model that can have wargear options and paint the interiors of vehicles (like I said, I’m a glutton for punishment). – so updates may be infrequent, but I’ll try and post some pictures of progress at least once a month…

Okay, without further ado. Here’s my current WIP my BA Stormraven. I’ve pretty much got half of the interior painted to a standard I’m happy with, except I tried my first ever OSL technique (see pics) which isn’t that great. I basically mixed a bit of Ice Blue (don’t worry it’s meant to be a blue light!) with the green/red from the wall/door frames, but it isn’t that noticeable... I’m not sure if I should go with more of the same (blue with green/red mix) or just some watered down blue to help bring the colouring out. Advice or pointing to tutorials on the subject would be appreciated. At least since it’s the interior it won’t get seen (another reason why I paint the interiors is to practice new techniques). I am very happy with how the worn leather for the seats looks though.

Right, less rambling more picture:

Okay, I hope you enjoy my ramblings (I use the term ‘enjoy’ loosely) comments/crit would be good, but fellow lurkers are equally welcome.

Hello Dakka Folks,

Are you ready for post 2? I can’t hear you!

So I haven’t managed to tempt any posters, but I think we’ve got a couple of lurkers in our mists, which is cool. I know your style, you’re like genesteelers in Space Hulk lurking at the entrances aren’t you?!

Right, so bank holiday weekends, how about those eh? I actually managed to get a tad of painting done, which pleased me greatly. However I haven’t taken any pictures of what I’ve done.

So why are you posting you bumbling fool?

Wait! Let me explain; I finished the interior of the StormRaven(!), but unfortunately I masked it up already, ready for when new pots filled with red paint arrive, to replace my empty pots of red paint and then I will airbrush the exterior! - That was quite a long sentence eh? Sorry about that, just take a deep breath and we’ll continue. I also primed a Furioso Dread, which I won’t be posting pictures of, as no one needs to see my undercoated dread…

So whilst I’m waiting for paints to arrive and the exterior painting to begin I thought I would
(a) Post the list I’m building
(b) Post some pictures of the already painted miniatures.

You lucky devils you.

Since my cat is currently sat on the bag where my camera is I’ll post some details about the list I’m building, so here it is:

HQ:
Libby - 100 (Rage, Sanguine sword) Painted

Troops:
ASM 1 (No JPs) - 10 man, melta, melta, powerfist - 245 Models painted, just need to finish backpacks and sarge weapons
ASM 2 (With Jps) - 10 man, melta, melta, powerfist - 245 Painted
Tac 1 - 10 man; Flamer, Missile. Sarge w/ Combi-Flamer - melta bombs - 185 Models painted, just need to finish backpacks and sarge weapons
DT - Razorback with upgrade Assault cannons - 90 Interior painted - but need to get my dirty mits on an assault cannon

Elites
Furioso Dread - Blood Talons, H Flamer - 135 Undercoatedd
3 x Priest – 155 (1metla bombs) Painted

Heavy:
Storm Raven (TL MM, TL AC) Extra Armour - 215 Interior painted
Dev 1 - 5 man; 4 Missile - 130 Undercoatedd

1500 on the money!

So there’s the list, I was aiming for a semi-competitive but fun list. I rarely game, but once this list is fully painted I’m going to venture into the realms of gaming clubs and meet like-minded people and have them stomp on my army (metaphorically only – I hope).

Right, some picture. I won’t bore you with each individual marine that I’ve painted, but instead will do a little ‘Best of’:

HQ:

Here's my libby, I am pretty pleased with how he came out overall. I think I could improve the sword though, but if was my first attempt at the crazy sword lightening non-sense. Also the mask and sword hilt are meant to be NMM gold, but they look a bit crappy. Still, practice will eventually make adequate.

Another pic of the libby, just because he's the HQ and he deserves it

A couple of tac marines

Special weapons

Assault Marines

and finally a couple of priests.

So there we have it. Crit on the models and the list is welcome. Otherwise, well just keep lurking you geney-steeley-esque dakka-ites.

Hey hey

Thought I'd post a little update as the Storm Turkey is starting to take shape.

I've basecoated the exterior, and unwrapped the masking tap (which did take some paint with it, which didn't please me). Anyway. we have the cockpit (pretty pleased with how this turned out), the tech driver, the engines and some before and after shots of the exhaust (which isn't finished yet, but the exterior armour is...if that makes sense)...

All maked up pre base coat:

Engines (Finished)

Exhaust Pre-wash:

Exhaust Post-wash:

Tech Marine:

Cockpit:

Turkey top:

We're blessed with another bank-holiday next weekend, so perhaps another update next week, but we'll see...I have a feeling the exterior is going to be quite a slog to get done.

Until next time.

Hold on to your kites, cause EDC is going to drop another post.

BOOM!

Right, so excellent news. The Stormraven is nearly finished, all the main body work is done and all the detailing all that's left to do is get me some FW doors for it and it'll be there, more on all that later. First I want to tell you a little story (with pictures) about how I saved some painting that almost went horribly wrong.

So here's the tale, I though I'd put some hazard stripes on the front and read door of the SR, and to do this I though I'd painted it black (I saw a red door and wanted to paint it black) put some masking tape on it and then paint it orange and build up to yellow...well let me show you what happened:

Oh God!

Luckily I managed to save it, check out these what happened:

Rescue mission, step 1: Tidy up

Rescue mission, step 2: Add yellow:

Yellow CU:

Rescue Mission Step 3: SAFE!

Safe CU

So I managed to save the hazard stripe doors, I'm pretty p[leased with the final result: here's the back door with the interior, just to finish this little segment:

Other exciting news in the detailing of the SR: I did my second attempt of NNM, which actually turn out pretty well. I even took pics as I was going along so can detail how I did it. I'm still not sure the recipe is good enough to attempt doing a full figure in NMM, so any advice/crit etc would be appreciated:

Here we go:

Base coat: Dark Flesh

I Also did the wings but I won't spam you with the images unless you want them...
Spoiler:

1st highlight 1:1 Bestial Brown + Snakebite leather

Spoiler:

2nd Highlight 2:1 Snakebite Leather + Golden Yellow

Spoiler:

3rd Highlight 1:1 Golden Yellow + Bronzed Flesh

Spoiler:

Only 4 steps, which makes it seem far too easy, but I'm pretty pleased with the results, but like I said it's not good enough for my to try on Power Armour and get a good result I don't think.

I was also pretty pleased with how the missiles came out, so here's a little pic:

Next up was the 'Top Gun' - which I've also magnetised. Here are some WIPs of that going down:

Top Gun 1

Top Gun 2: Lost in New York

Top Gun 3: Revenge of the Servitor

Not sure how I feel about the skin tones, I was going for standard grey skin as it's not living flesh, but I think it looks a little too un-dead. What do you think?

Top Gun 4: Final Assault

I won't bore you much longer I promise...So here’s the Raven in its current state, as you can see it's basically finished, I certainly wouldn't hesitate getting it on the table.

I'm gonna get some FW doors for the side I reckon, as it will be a pretty central piece in my army.

So like I said the only thing left to do is it base it up,

I wanted to give the stand some extra stability, so drilled the bottom of the stand and then bent some paper clips through the base before green stuffing it down. TBH this probably wasn't necessary but once I get an idea in my head I get on a roll...

So this is what we started with, which is a bit dull for my centrepiece, so I got a bit of terrain to include. I plugged up that whole which you can see using bits of sprue (forgot to get a pic though (D'oh) I'll get one later. Which leaves me here...

Still a bit dull, no? It needs some debris!

Yeah now we're getting there, here it is undercoated and a pic to tease you of the unpainted debris AND the ruin.

So the SR should be finished fairly soon...which means I can get on with my Furioso Dread...I started working on him while I was waiting for the basecoat on the SR base to dry: here's some pics:

Right, that's your cracker for the moment.

Hope you've enjoyed!

Cheers for the comment Brian. If only I could paint the interior of my dread!

I know they'll be no painting for me this weekend, so I'll post a mini update of the SR base:

To be honest, I'm not that thrilled by how it's turned out...but I can't put my finger on what isn't working for me. I think the 'girder' things looks a bit too unifrom?...Not sure.

Anyway, it'll do!

I need to paint the edge of the base and glue the ruin down but then it's done. What's the general concenus on the edge of bases? Brown? Black? Somethng else? All my bases are pretty scruffy on the edges, so I should probably sort them out but I don't know what colour would be most suitable.

Anyway, Pics:

Until next time

Girders are fine, and I'd tend to paint my city bases grey around the edges, or black.

Ok folks, quick update.

The dread is coming along nicely, really pleased with how the wings on the front plate are looking.

I won’t waste anymore time getting to the pics as I want to get my paints out!

Briefly, in other news I pre-ordered my 6th Ed rulebook. Originally planned to wait for the starter kit, but I cracked. Needless to say I can't wait!

My brother is up this weekend, so we're going to roll some dice and test the new rules. So maybe an update next week with more pics of the dread and my thoughts on 6th.

Anyway, must dash, the paints are calling!

So Update time,

and it's about bloody time! Obviously my main excuse is that with the release of 6th a lot of the time I would’ve spent painting I've spent pouring over the rule book (Note: I'm not pouring paint over my new rule book). I've also played a handful of games of 6th, must say I'm loving it so far, I can't wait to play more games.

You my friend are far too kind. I mean let's be honest...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp_XZSNuwgs&feature=player_detailpage#t=117s
I think I'm getting better though!

I have made some progress and my dread is in fact finished now (YEY!) - well, the blood talon weapon load out is. Okay, unfortunately i didn't take many WIP pics, but I'll post what I've got.

First up - I did remember to take WIP pics of a talon as the first one came out quite well and thought I'd share the method:

It was base coated with Necron Abyss then...

Highlight 1
Regal Blue

Highlight 2
Enchangedted Blue

Highlight 3
Ice Blue

Highlight 4
1:1 Ice Blue & Skull White

As I said not many WIP pics, so we'll skip to the finished product:

Finished front

Finished LHS

Finished RHS

Finished Rear:

Finished top:

Finished on Base

Next up I'm going to do a Dev Squad, I'm going to try to be not so reliant on the old washes for these models and see how ti goes.

here's where I am with the first layer of highlights (Blood red)

Okay, that's it for today. See you all soon!

Loving the dread.

Could you do a tutorial for those lightning/energy effects for power swords and similar? I'd really appreciate it as it's something I'd love to try but have never attempted, and what you did seems like a very simple but effective way of doing it.

Yeah, I will try and whip something together when I do my DC as they'll have power weapons a go-go. I did give a brief break down of the colours used for the claws in my post, which to summarise was:

Base coat: Necron Abyss
Highlight 1: Regal Blue
Highlight 2: Enchanted Blue (which I spelt horribly wrong in my previous post )
Highlight 3: Ice Blue
Highlight 4: 1:1 Ice Blue & Skull White

I basically just tried to paint inside the previous layer, so thin brushes are required near the end. I'll try and give more detail when I do my DC though.

Cheer Proto, glad you found the NMM useful. As I said in the post I don't think I could use that recipe for a SMs armour, but it's good enough for the medium sized details. I've nearly got my Dev squad finished, so an update with pics should happen before the end of the month (he says).

Cheer Merlin. I wish I knew where the ruin that I used on my flyer base came from, as I got it in a large set of misc scenery from Ebay (which pretty much all still needs painting )

As mentioned I should be updating before the end of the month with my Dev Squad as I've got the last week of the month off, so if I fail to update after that, well frankly I need to be beaten with a large stick. Really pleased with how they've turned out so far, but I am facing a bit of a dilemma with them.

I'll leave it on that note of suspense.

Stealth update.

Only a little one because I promised something of an update for Aug (yes, I'm fully aware it's Sept 1st and I've failed the aug update completely)

First things first, Dev Squad are so very nearly finished, I was tempted to wait until it was before I updated but now I can also update when they're finished and I won't look so completely slack.

Here we go (again not many WIP pics, but there is a few at least), don't worry now, they're 'armless.

I took the pictures outside hoping the lighting might improve the quality of pictures and make my painting appear better, although it looks like I've failed on both counts! . The dilemma I was hinting at in my previous post was the fact the armour on these guys is a more vibrant red, rather than the darker maroon-ish colour of the rest of my army, I quite like how these have turned out, so I don't know if I should leave them as they are or darken them a little bit to give my army a more consistent look. What do you guys think? Here's a pic of one of my other Sgts to give you an idea about the different in colour

Although I've only got 5 Dev dues painted I've been quite busy in the hobby, I made a wet palette (pics and walkthrough provided on demand), it's only very basic but it does stop my paint drying so quickly, thus saving me money in the long term (bonus), also I think it's help my overall painting as the mixing is more consistent.

I've also been messing about trying to get some of my magnetised special weapons dudes to be a bit more solid, I keep finding the arms will fall off sometimes despite the magnets (just to mock me no doubt!) so I've been pinning them as well, which seems more sturdy.

Next up I've going to paint up the jump-packs from my other assault squad as they've had nothing for so long. After that I've got some attach bikes off ebay (one part metal part plastic, the other fully plastic) so I've got to strip those and they'll be painted next. I've ordered a copy of Dark Vengeance so I may convert some of the DA models to fit into my BA army, but I think I might wait and see what the codex is like as DA and BA are battle brothers in the allies table, so I might do some shenanigans with them. I've also got captain Tycho waiting to be painted up and my DC, so plenty to keep me going. As mentioned I think I will stick with painting up my BA until at least the DA Codex is released. Must resist the new shinies!

Another update when the Dev's are finished, please leave feedback on the armour situation (see above) and any general C&C about my painting is welcome.

Cheers

D

Edit: Also thank to
Lucarikx, troy_tempest, and Wh40kPicasso for the kind words. Glad to ahve you on board!

be careful when you magnetize things because you can make it look like the arms arent even attached. Paintjob 8/10, magnetizing job.. 4/10 for effort. just get them as flush as you can, dw his insides won't hurt... much!

Hello,

Yes, I'm fully aware that it's been over 8 billion years since I last updated properly, and yes I'm crap and slow...

Anyway, update? Yes, bring the noise...

So, the Dev squad is now FINISHED! WOOO! It's now even fully WYSIWYG for my list (4 ML)

No Flash

Flash:

Pretty happy with how they turned out, I do still need to decide what I'm going to do with the edges of the bases though...Brown? Grey? Black? Thoughts?

You want indi' shots?...I'll hide them in the spoliers...

Spoiler:

ML1

ML2

ML3

ML4

I also lost an assault marine (somehow!), so I've had to paint a new one, fortunately I had enough bits to make replacement... Also I remembered to give this one a yellow helmet, of course this means I've now go to give the rest of my 2 squads yellow helms...anyone ever done any precision stripping? Can it be done or should I just paint over the read helmets?

Anyway, here's Mr Yellow

Here's some WIP pics, if anyone's interested...
Spoiler:

I also painted a DC dude, went for the white power armour as per Angels Encarmine scheme, really pleased with how he turned out, the white was a pain to paint though...I've also really pleased with the skin tones and hair, the face in general actually. Anyway...Hidden wips if anyone wants, mainly of how I did the power armour, but still, at least i remembered to take pictures!

Spoiler:

I painted the DC as a test mini for the squad just to have a break from wading through red paint, but I'm now onto some Attack Bikes, which I snagged off ebay on the cheaps.

I've stripped those...here's the proof

Until next time (whenever that may be!)
