So for this tournament I have in a few months, I do not have the time or the budget to go for a large horde army (uni student)

So after the grey knights codex was released, Dragiowing became one of those ZOMG broken lists with cries of cheese everywhere, however I have not seen many people use them more recently with purifier and henchmen spam maybe being better builds.

So what I want to know is, can draigowing still be competitive, or like nob bikers, now veryone knows how to play against them, is not worth it anymore?

Also what are some good Draigowing tactics?

and can it work at 1500 points?

cheers

It's a very tough game for Draigowing at 1500.

1850-2000 is the sweet spot tbh.

You'd be better off with Deathwing or Loganwing at 1500.

I'd say its not as competitive as everyone said, just because the low model count and vulnerability to instant death are both bighandicaps...
bigger points games would certainly help, although it also has the problem of your opponent fielding more big weaponry and CC specialists to bog you down.

it all depends on the dice gods, you can be a devastating army, as long as you never roll a 1

Niiru is correct.

Against some armies, Draigowing owns, but against others it just dies without so much as a whimper.

Just stay away from IG and Abaddon The Despoiler.

And dark eldar. And space wolves. umm, Tau might be pretty tricky too lol. And Orks with lootas will be pretty nasty Ive discovered.

You can play Tyranids though! (before anyone flames me, Ive had tyranids for many many years... but at the moment they are unfortunately pretty poor :( )

Dont spoil it! He can buy his 20 terminators, paint them to a professional standard, lose the tournament, and then sell them to me on eBay for peanuts!

Actually I dont need that many terminators... field a stormraven list, I need one of those!

Let me start off by saying that I never said I wanted to win, re-read if you dont believe me, I just want something competitve. I apologize if thats what it sounded like, I honestly dont care about winning the whole tournament, I woud just like to know if its still a decent build or if I would get my butt kicked evertime, besides I have a large tyranid army in the making, why? because I love the models, same thing for grey knights, I love the models.

Do you honestly expect people to pay money to go to a tournament, and then take a non competitive list and spend the whole time feeling like you are there to just make up the numbers? I dont think so. I am not one of those WAAC players, I just want a cheap second army, that uses models I like, and has SOME chance of winning.

Also does this mean that if we do not have much money then we should not be allowed in this hobby?

Again, I was just looking for some feedback as to if it would be vaible at this points level, my apologies

if you want to be competetive at a tourney, use the army you know the best. obviosly its NOT draigo wing, or this thread would not exist.

use your strongest army with its strongest build, and play. making a new army just for a tournament is generally a fail.

and fyi a single thread on "how do i become competetive" is probally the LAST thing you need to actually become such. you get competetive by playing lots of games, loosing a ton of them, and learning from the loss. when you win, learn even more from that. not by reading forums on how certain netlists play - because your local meta will be completly diffrent then whats suggested here, or what people believe works since they have their own metas to deal with - and wich have influenced what they believe works

</end rant>......for now.....

I'm sorry, and I am not looking to argue with anyone here, I have been out of the game for about a year and just coming back so in that sense I do not have a 'strongest army'.

As I said right back at the beginning, I am not looking to win, just wondering if Draigowing was competitve at 1500, This will be my first tournament and I am just wanting to go and have a good time, meet some gamers and maybe, just maybe, win a game or two. Whatever list I decide, if I can decide now, I have time to get many games in and get used to what type of amry I will be playing.

I dont want a list and tactics for said list handed to me on a plate so all I can do is point and click, I was just wondering how people play draigowing, if people still do play it.

It's never been especially viable. It's just a way to out bad players who can't get over the sticker shock of 2 wound Terminators. They panic and don't know what to do because they can't get over that mental hurdle.

Thanks Brother SRM, I think that I might just go for a standard grey knight build then, taking some units that I like, mainly becasue they would be one of the lowest model count armies out there, main issue is more having time to paint rather than budget, and no I will not be using henchman or purifier spam. Other armies I am looking at are guard, BA or DE.

Grey knights can be decent without Draigo and paladins. Purifiers are also good - but avoid spamming them if you wish to avoid Cory's of cheese.

Psybolt riflemen dreads are great, and your only real ranged support. Storm ravens also work pretty nice, and strike squads with normal termie support is good.

My advice for tourneys.

- as cheap an HQ as possible. Keep him simple.
- take as close to 6 troops selections as you. Can get. Troops win games, and you'll score well in comp.
- round out with anything else. Try to avoid 3 super expensive hev supports, but as GK that shouldn't be an issue....

Then just make sure you have a rule book templates and codex. Know your codex as much as possible. And have fun.

Draigowing is viable much like deathwing is viable. It bucks the MSU metagame enough to cause favorable matchups against a lot of lists. People tooling up to take out tons of rhinos and razorbacks probably will load up on medium strength high rate of fire heavy weapons, like auto/assault cannons.

A list full of those won't be set to deal with an army with little or no vehicles, and tons of 2+ saves with multiple wounds and wound allocation on top of it.

I always enjoy making new armies for tournies, tends to be a good motivator to get it painted because you have a deadline.

Dark Eldar- 1500pts Completed
Grey Knights- 1500pts 1 Guy done
Chaos Daemons- Approx 5000pts
Slaanesh Daemons- 1500pts, in progress
Khorne Daemons- 1500pts, in progress
Death Korps of Krieg- Plans being formulated.
---------------------------------------------------
High Elves- Approx 2000pts
Vampire Counts- Raising the dead once more

Yea but. A whole new one? In my exp it usually equals a loss since your not really "in tune" with the army. When DE first came out I lost a few games in a row simply because I was not really fully aware of what the codex could do. Same with most other codex. My gaming buddies all say the same thing. First few games with the new army tend to be losses while you hash out and learn your new army. Therefore bringing a new one to a tourney is generally asking for a loss.

This is of course assuming new = never played that codex before, and not just a variant paint scheme or something.
