I agree man, the grav-bombard thing is pretty awesome looking.

I finished up his little minions today - the rest of a contemptor talon. Here they are:

It's funny, the contemptors used to look enormous. Now they look a bit small. I guess it's dreadnought creep.

I've got a few more things to get together, then the first battle in our re-enactment of "the night of the wolf" will be played out on Wednesday.

Here's the trio of scenarios we'll be using (the fluff is bummed off the 40k lexicanum):
Night of the Wolf (Unknown Date.M30) - Imperial records state that two Primarchs came to Angron, both claiming to have been sent by the Emperor in an attempt to stop him from implanting his Astartes of the World Eaters Legion with the cortical implants known as the Butcher's Nails that were transforming his Space Marines into berserk and savage killers. The first arrived soon after Angron joined his Legion after being unwillingly rescued from his homeworld of Nuceria. The second would not come until almost a century later. By then, it would already be too late for the XIIth Legion. The Night of the Wolf is a little known incident that occurred shortly after the World Eaters' massacre of the entire planetary population of the world of Ghenna. The Primarch Leman Russ had been charged by the Emperor to take his Space Wolves Legion to Ghenna to bring the World Eaters to heel. The two Legions met at Malkoya, on the fields beyond the dead Ghennan city of that same name. The World Eaters, battered and bleeding from Ghenna’s Imperial Compliance campaign, formed ragged lines before the assembled Space Wolves Legion. The Primarchs stood before their hosts, armed and armoured -- Angron awash with blood and carved up by fresh wounds; Leman Russ in resplendent battle-plate the colour of the storms on his tempestuous homeworld of Fenris. In these early years of the Great Crusade, Angron still carried his first axe, the precursor to all others. He called it Widowmaker. It would break this very day, never to be used again. Russ carried Krakenmaw, his immense Chainblade, toothed by some Fenrisian sea-devil from that blighted world’s many myths. Angron refused to recognise his brother's authority, and warned the Wolf King to depart before the situation became something that he would regret. But Russ refused to be cowed by the warlike Primarch. He informed Angron that the implantation surgeries must end, for the Emperor Himself had deemed it so. The massacres of newly discovered human worlds were to end with the fall of Ghenna. The World Eaters were to submit to the Space Wolves as their escorts for their Legion's return to Terra. Once they reached the Imperial Palace, everything would be done to remove the parasitic Butcher's Nails implants from the World Eaters' minds. Angron was not amused by Russ' implied threats. No one ever saw who fired the first shot. In the decades after, the World Eaters claimed it came from the Space Wolves' lines, and the Space Wolves claimed the same of the XIIth Legion. Without either Primarch giving an order, the two Space Marine Legions fought. The Night of the Wolf, it was later called. Imperial archives referred to it as the Ghenna Scouring, omitting the moment the World Eaters and Space Wolves drew blood. A source of pride for both Legions, and a source of secret shame. Both claimed victory. But both feared they had actually lost, and in truth, the battle proved bloody but inconclusive. But the World Eaters did not return to Terra, and Angron refused to stop the implantation of his Astartes.

Scenario 1: Sparring for Position
Situation: The two armies stand across from each other and arrayed for battle. Only a fool imagines the argument between the two primarchs will result in anything but battle, and the subordinate commanders of both legions begin directing their men to capture key pieces of terrain in preparation for the upcoming slaughter.
Force Org: 2 armies of 3k points. No primarchs.
Deployment: Clash of the lines (see the Mechanicum book). Played on a segmented board (like the city-scape board at Mythic)
Primary Objective: At the beginning of each player’s turn, he gains a number of VP = to the number of board sections he controls. A player controls a board section by having the most models (of any type) on that section. The player with the most VP at the end of the games wins.
Secondary Objectives:
He died badly, they always do: destroying the opponent’s warlord is worth an additional D3 VP
Attrition: the army which has destroyed the highest number of enemy units at the end of the game gains an additional D3 VP
Special Rules:
The player that wins this scenario can give one unit the scout and outflank rules in scenario 3.

Scenario 2: Looking to the future
Situation: As the duel between the primarchs looks inevitable, and both armies prepare for combat, select commanders on both sides look to the future to ensure their exfiltration routes aren’t cut off.
Force Org: 2 armies of 4k points. No primarchs.
Deployment: Vanguard Strike
Primary Objective: At the beginning of the game, set up a total of 5 secondary objectives and 2 primary objectives (landing zones). At the end of the game, if either player does not control or contest at least one of the landing zones, he loses. If both players control or contest a landing zone, whoever controls more secondary objectives wins. Apply the standard rules for controlling and contesting objectives.
Secondary Objectives:
None
Special Rules:
The winner can add 1 to his reserve rolls in the 3rd scenario.

Scenario3: Blood for Blood
Situation: As the argument between the two primarchs escalates into combat, shots are fired, and with a cacophony of roars and howls, the two legions charge each other. Blood begets blood, and those afflicted with the nails aren’t the only ones to lose themselves in the slaughter. As two brothers battle for supremacy, the two legions destroy one another in rage.
Force Org: 2 armies of 5k points. Both sides must select their respective primarch.
Deployment: Dawn of War (see scenario 1 for the deployment distances)
Primary Objective:
Death Toll: At the end of the game, each side gains a VP for every enemy unit that is destroyed or falling back.
Blood Feud: (see Mechanicum book p. 98)
The duel: The battle between Russ and Angron rages in the center of the table. The two models are positioned in the center of the table after deployment and cannot be moved, targeted, or attacked in any way. At the end of each game turn, fight a round of combat between the two primarchs. For every 10 friendly models within 12 inches of the battle that are not engaged in battle, that primarch may reroll 1 roll of his choice in the combat, or regain 1 wound. This may be used to reroll a dice for a second time. The winner of the duel scores an additional 5 VP.
Secondary Objectives:
Last Man Standing: The player with the most units alive and unbroken at the end of the game gains 1 VP.
Special Rules:
Blood for Blood: All units have hatred against all enemy units (including the primarchs).

More to come!

So it's been a gaming sort of week. We fought the first of 3 battles in our reenactment of the Night of the Wolf (victory to the Rout!), and today we're fighting out the Fall of Kislev.

Here are pics from the first battle, and a set up picture from the second:

Results to follow!

The mega battle for Kislev went off without a hitch. 12 hours later, the empire had fought its way to a narrow loss after only killing 17,800 points of the necessary 20,000 points of chaos. In the end, the chaos force's ability to recycle troops wore down our hammers and eventually broke them, and by turn 6, better than half of the imperial forces were defeated. Krakenrock breaching the gates formally ended the game, but it's unlikely the empire would have scored much more anyway.

Here are a few of the best photos of the battle:

The rest are here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/core/gallery-search.jsp?p=1&u=18254&g=49705&ll=3&auction=0&unapproved=0&coolnesslow=0&coolnesshigh=10&paintjoblow=0&paintjobhigh=10&sort1=7&sort2=0&skip=30&en=&st=&utype=&start=0

In the end, seeing over 50k of painted stuff on the table was pretty amazing, and good times were had by all.

Next up, I've been working on a brand-new project...a Solar Auxilia army. May god have mercy on my wallet.

First, here is the first part of an Ordos Reductor squad that will be part of my upcoming Solar Auxilia army. These guys are testing the color scheme for the rest of the list:

As you can see, I'm trying something different with these guys. Usually, I'm a bright and colorful sort of guy, but for the Auxilia, I want to paint a dark, grimy, Death Korps inspired, scheme accentuated with a bit of OSL.

What do you think? Is the scheme effective?

WOW

That battle for Kislev looks absolutely superb. I love playing huge games like that. Seeing probably hundreds or thousands of models, all fully painted, on a beautiful table is why I game. I am extremely jealous of you mate.

Keep up the good work

I had a pretty busy hobby weekend.

First, I finished up the Magos Reductor and his squad of Thallax bots for the Solar Auxilia army. I'm stoked about the way the paint scheme came out, so I'm going to apply it to the rest of the army. The pictures are a bit dark to emphasize the one source lighting - or my attempt at it anyway!

Second, I found a pretty sick deal on some Celtic Knight bodies from Scribor, so I turned them into a new unit of veterans, a champion, and a legion standard bearer for the Vlka Fenryka:

I'm working on being able to field the force as a full orbital assault, so next up I think I'm going to work on a pair of death storm missile pods.

Oh, and as an afterthought, here is the logo for my Blood Bowl team for our league's 2nd season - a vampire team named the Drakenhoff Homonyms:

So today I'm shifting gears a bit. The first part of my new Solar Auxilia army came in, and I finished up the first squad of the 555th Cthonians - the "Triple Nickel" regiment that was sworn to the Warmaster during the crusade. As masters of void-siege warfare, the regiment was called on many times to break stalemates until Horus turned traitor.

To a man, the 555th denied his legitimacy and were destroyed for their loyalty.

Here's the first squad - I'm shooting for a gritty, Death Korps look with plenty of filth and weathering.

I'm using the visors and flamers to add some "pop" to an otherwise very dark paint scheme - is it working?

I finished up the first Dracosan last night, so I figured I'd post photos of the whole squad with a few better close-ups.

I'm digging the color scheme on the SA. The visor and flamer really draw attention to the model in the right areas. Nice job

Thanks - I'm glad the scheme is working. I'll post the next unit in the next few days (a command squad).

Today's update is on a side project I just finished.

I've wanted a home gaming table for some time, having bumped into the usual issues with gaming on the kitchen table (wife anger mostly), and I wanted it to be a bit nicer than the usual 6x4-plywood-with-legs sort of thing. After a bit of hunting, I found this guy's link:

https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1471747/build-gaming-table-150

Using his design as a base, I built my own, and today marked the final coat of varnish on it. Here are the completed pics:

The playing surface is a sheet of 5mm neoprene - great for rolling dice and sliding models on. The rest is pretty simple - I'm no master carpenter, and I got it together without too much swearing.

Anyway, that's all for today. More to come soon.

Table looks veery good, and the neoprene is an excellent idea, filed that one for future (indeterminated time future, that is!) use.

The neoprene works really well - I got the idea from a Tablewar mat I purchased. The stuff is pretty much indestructible, and it looks good too.

I finished up some more of the Solar Auxilia today. My big order from FW came in, and now I have a pretty hefty queue of SA stuff to paint up.

Here's what I've gotten done so far:

Next up, I'm working on a 20 man lasgun squad and a Malcador battle tank. I'm quite happy with the color scheme; all of the models have something that works with the glowing orange color scheme, and I think the grimy look works well for the rest of the models.

More to come,

Thanks bro.

The recipe for the SA guys was:

spray all with grey/green primer (rustoleum)
basecoats:
leather - rhinox hide
metal - leadbelcher
black - black
wood - bestial brown

heavy wash of the entire model with watered down black paint (not wash, the actual paint)
highlights:
cloth - camo green
black - skavenblight dinge
leather - 50/50 rhinox hide / bleached bone
wood - 50/50 bestial brown / bleached boA
Afterward, I stippled on a few spots of leadbelcher with an old brush to create the areas where the armor is worn down to base metal.
I dry brushed rhinox hide over the boots and lower areas of the models to look like mud, then highlighted those areas with 50/50 rhinox hide / slayer orange to make the mud look rusty.

Finally, I did the orange areas (gun coils and eyes) and added a bit of OSL by drybrushing wild rider red to the appropriate areas.

That was it. It wasn't too much work in the end - I'm glad the effect came off well.

I finished up a couple of models for the 555th this weekend.

first, here's the regiment's Stormhammer, "The October Revolution":

Next up, here's the Lord Marshall of the regiment - he doesn't have a name yet:

He's obviously a pretty simple conversion, but when I saw the model, I didn't want to do more with it. I like the eagle - he'll have a cyberfamiliar - and swapping the inquisitorial icons was pretty simple work.

Next up, I'm working on the Aegis line and a squad of storm troopers.

More to come,

Badass looking tank, but the Lord Marshall steals the show. As you said, simple conversion, but that works so well. A real noble and sinister stance, very fitting for an army leader.

Hi all.

It's a been a while since the last update, but I haven't been idle. I finished up a ton on the 555th Solar Auxilia regiment, and I've undertaken another commissioned expansion for the looted tyranids.

First up, here's what I've gotten done on the 555th. I'm almost done with the 3k army I initially planned and ordered.

In total, that's 2 storm trooper squads, 2 aegis lines, 1 dracosan and 1 thunderbolt. I'm still shooting for the grim and gritty look with these guys, and I wanted the aegis to look like it's tied into existing terrain, as the normal aegis looks a bit sterile IMO.

Next up, I started on a series of ork/genestealer hybrids.

These guys will count as genestealers in the looted tyranid army. They'll be accompanied by some remote controlled purestrain 'stealers. I love ork conversions.

And that's all for today.

More to come soon.

Where do you find the time for all this I get exhausted looking at the amount you do LOL

Love the 555th very bleak colour tone but fitting reflects the slight SP vibe, mind you you have a few to do still .....

Those looter genes look fantastic enough of both species to reflect there origins perfectly

Genestealer hybrids look totally badass! Can't wait to see them on the table with the rest of their hive!

I got ALL of the looted Nids on the table for a game last week, 3000 points against IG & Mechanicum. Maximum carnage, dead bugs everywhere, was a narrow loss but tons of fun.

These guys will add a new dimension to the army, they look great so far!

It's been raining heavily here for a while, so I had some extra time for painting this weekend.

Here are the results - 11 genestealer/ork hybrids.

With the looting of a tyranid swarm by the Deathskullz, I figure it's inevitable that a few genestealers would have infected a few orks somewhere, and here are the results.

When an ork emerges with a bunch of blue veins, an extra bitey head, and a clawed arm, I figure it's probably met with great celebration by his mates. Given their extra sharp bits and natural sneakiness, these hybrids make natural commandos.

Next up, I'll finish the 4 actual genestealer models I have leftover. Together, the 15 models will comprise the entire "brood" of 'stealers.

More to come,

There's nothing like a week off to get plenty of hobby work done.

Wow, so it's been a few weeks since I last posted anything, but I've gotten plenty of painting done.

On an aside, my ogres won the 2nd Santa Cruz Blood Bowl season, going undefeated for 10 straight games. Go dumb asses.

On the painting side of the house, I finished up the 555th Solar Auxilia regiment. Here are the full army pics:

They turned out to be just as gritty as I wanted. I loosely based their imagery on the old David Lynch Sardurkar troops from Dune. The colors are different, but I love the generally dark-with-glowy-bits theme.

Anyway, more to come!

Wow, so it's been about 6 months since I did much painting, and this is why:

On the move back to Florida, the moving company lost a box, and that box was full of models - to include several of my best (the demon prince of rock, leviathan dread, and fire raptor to name a few).

This broke me for a while. While the company never ended up finding the box, they did finally settle with me, and with the release of Leman Russ, I'm back at the painting table again.

Here are the first steps back:

On the whole, I think the Russ model is pretty bad ass. If I had my way, he'd be posed differently (I think the charging thing is overdone) - I'd rather see him in mid-howl - but that's not the end of the world. The one aspect I don't like much is how clean he looks. My wolves are dirty, hairy, and covered in smelly pelts, and I want their primarch to be similarly adorned. Consequently, the only conversion I'll really apply to him will be the addition of hairiness. Once I get that finished, I think he'll be ready to go.

I also included the Company's new wolf priest for scale - as you can see, Russ is a big hombre.

The other project I sat down to was the new boxed set for Blood Bowl. I'm a huge fan of the game in general, and I was stoked to see it re-released. My son is painting up the orcs, but the humans are all mine. Here's the group shot:

Well, it's good to be back at the painting desk. Next up, I'm going to be creating a replacement fuel tank for my malcador infernus. the movers lost the trailer, and FW doesn't do bits. Le Sigh.

Until then,

Take care.

Been a while but thought I would drop in for a quick chat, as usual amazing work great creativity and you never know what you will find

Loving the 555th really got that earthy trench fighter feel to them, all blends nicely together from the heavy armour to cannon fodder.

However the cream of the crop for me is those dumb asses ogres they are nice and bright ( all be it only in colour ) you have done a fine job on those really pulled out the detail perfectly.

By the way who makes those ogres if you don't mind me asking

Also I am pretty sure their was a trailer from the FW inferus kit for sale on either eBay or FB trade page, if I find it do you want me to send you a link ? I know it was only a couple of days ago as I was considering it for a conversion.
