Kirkee made some serious progress on his senate building yesterday. Accept now I think it’s turning into some sort of inquisition court building. Is that a thing they would have on different planets and different cities?

It’s really tall and like I said before the insides going to be white marble with a bunch of murals

I don’t know if you can tell from this pic but it has a large mai. Floor where he’ll put like a dias or lecturn where the person address or the accused would stand. Then up above there are two rows of balconies

Just wait. I thought about this thing for years before I actually had a place where I could build it.

In regards to the senate or now the inquisition building, Here are the images kirkee settled on
:
image free hosting

I’ll also try to list our the steps for the marble but Im hoping we can put a better tutorial together later

1) get clear vinyl sheets from A hardware store. We got a 3x3’ at ace

2) cut those to the size of the marble panel. There are special blades for cutting clear vinyl ask for them at the hardware store

3) After that take the plastic film off of the bottom side of your marble. Leave the top covered until right before you glue it down. You are essentially painting your steps backwards, doing the main color last

4) the first color with be the lightest amount. Kirkee does spotting by flicking black paint onto the vinyl with an old toothbrush . (That’s in the case of white marble, for black marble he flicked cream)

5) then lightly mist on some other splotches for discoloration. We used grey

6) once the dry cover the entire back with your main color. In our current project that’s white.

The will get you this far

The rectangles at the top are how they should look from the top, the one on the bottom is the back view (the side you’ve been painting) notice it’s all white?

7) after this it’s time to add the veins. I don’t have any pictures of this step as we aren’t there yet for the white marble but what you do is take a dremil with the diamond tip and start making groove paternal. Some small, some large. Try to make them look like how the glas would crack if you dropped it or small valleys

Here’s an old pic of the finished black marble with veins

And here’s a test image of one of our images, printed on the transparency paper at 50% opacity and glued to the vinyl with the film off both sides. Excuse the glue mess, we used jet and will not do that again

Awesome! One question: how're you going to paint it? Now that the murals and marble are up? Are the panels removable, or will you mask them?

Yeah... that’s going to be a pain. They are in so Masking and hand brushing

Holy Terra.

Ah. I'd invest in some high quality painters tape (like, really *really* high quality). I have a roll that cost me about 30 bucks, and it hasn't leaked or not come off yet.
On another note, are those balcony things in the senate building big enough for a miniature to stand on? It'd be awesome if you built some kind of railing and seating area so you can have people/servitors hold court.

Good ideas. The plan was to have benches on the balconies but I don’t think there will be room for benches and a model so who knows.

I also worked on the pavered floor for the area under the cathedral (I think I was calling it the catacombs but that doesn’t make any sense)

I started out ok

But then rushed the second half.

Are you going to have a statue or a tomb in there? Maybe have it be a military commander that defended the planet or something.

Goddamn. Excellent work as always. Particular congrats on the murals, I thought they would be obviously copy/pasted and printed, but they turned out natural looking and very very convincing. Fantastic work!

Hey guys,

I think the crypt or whatever it is, is just going to have 4 coffins. I’m hoping to keep it playable so we can do stuff like “having a commander have his last stand there” or have some objective there. You may notice some of the skull or catacomb (or new a new word I learned “ossuaries”) panels are drilled out. In some of these we will have skulls pulling or falling out, in others maybe a coffin but 2 of them might actually end up being secret passages out. More to come on that though

Anyways....

Like I’ve been talking about I want to do a final mold of my planetary guard with more detail. But the problem, as we all know, with limited models is limited poses. To combat this some what I’ve decided to do my new molds and casts in a pose that can be used over and over and not look so odd. What I came up with was the idea of a marching pose and an at attention pose. I’m thinking I can make a few full squads of each and no one would bat an eye as long as I change up the faces or helmets.

Here’s the work in progress

And the 2 images I used for the concepts

Thoughts?

Also, I may have asked this already but what do you guys think of the new squads going without the cloaks and beefed up paldrons?I’ve decided trying to recreate them would just be too difficult. I would either need to order them or go without. And for the paldrons, I just haven’t been able to get the consistency they need

Im gonna need a change of pants.

Unbelievable.

The dirigibles could be barrage blimps. Basic air defence obstacles to clutter up the skies for attackers. But also covered in lasers and skulls of course. And some platforms to fight over.

Totally!

Not going to get to it for awhile but I want the airship to be somewhat playable. So it will probably have platforms around the base for models. I’m also trying to decide if it will have some sort of mouring anchor cable or if I’ll added a dock for shuttles/planes to connect to it

It will definently be armed

The anchor could also be it's power source, like when ships plug into the dock in Port. Would be easy to find random wire for that. Then have it attach to the ground with a magnet so it's secure but also removable.

I want to fly my dark Eldar into this place. Trying to disembark a payload of warriors before their raiders get blasted out of the sky by macro cannons.

Ok

I have both side of my mold done. Couple things I did this time to help with the molds was to

A) took time to make sure I knew where my mold lines would be. You don’t want any mold lines right on your main detail. In my case this was the imperial eagle on the chests. So obviously I stuck the model in backside first only keeping half of the model exposed.

B) took time that nothing would be encapsulated on just one side of the mold. you don’t want any silicone to go all the way around something g in a 2 part mold. How will you get it out? If this happens you need to cut that out before pouring the second half. For example you’ll see inside the red circle where I didn’t get the clay covering it enough and some small part got cover in he first half pour. Such as some of the wrists, ankles and even part of a leg and arm. I went back in and cut these out so they would be covered by the second half of the mold instead

C) because I used clay as my base for covering one half of the models while I poured the first half I had a lot of it still stuck to the models when I got ready to pour my second half. This is shown in the black circles. I went in and removed all of this with a brush and air hose

Also for those of you who don’t know. You’re supposed to use a mold release like Mann 200 before pouring the second half of the silicone.

Which I totally forgot to do because I was in a rush to get to the movies. But when I got home I ran in and ripped the two parts across the pour seem and I got lucky and they came apart

I’ll try my first cast later today. Just testing the resin to make sure it’s still good. It’s getting pretty hot here in AZ but in not sure if the garage has gotten hot enough to ruin it yet

Not too shabby.

The marching dudes arm (not shown) isn’t venting or channeling right but everything else looks like it’s coming out fine

Changed my mind again. They need cloaks

Did a little working on the underground portion of the cathedral today. Another round of grout, some more sanding and screwed in the pillars.

added a top to secure everything because the cathedral itself will be removable. The fact that you can see through it is just accidental. It won’t remain that way. It was just the toughest material we had on hand

Also added some coffins and plinths. Which you can see better through the clear top

Thank you for sharing this, I'm genuinely excited to try your flooring idea! I'm in the middle of a massive Mordheim redesign / build and this is just excellent.

Thanks bloodaxe, but totally not my idea. Follow the original tutorial here:

https://robhawkinshobby.blogspot.com/2014/07/terrain-tutorial-flagstone-streets.html?m=1

And don’t cut corners. Rob does it in a certain order with specific material for a reason. All of the changes I made were at my own detriment.

Biggest thing is spacing. Don’t spread them out more than they are supposed to be and don’t leave ANY open squares. Those look the worst
