About time someone actually made a boxed starter set for a historical game. Warlord is making a starter set for their Hail Caesar ancient and medieval rules using Celts and Romans. Though eventually you're gonna need a lot more figures

Hail Caesar – Conquest of Gaul gives you the rules and two starter armies. Perfect for getting stuck into Hail Caesar with your mates.

Hail Caesar is a game of tabletop battles with model soldiers set in the Ancients era. Pit your wits and tactics against your friends as your armies clash in combat on the tabletop.

The Conquest of Gaul starter set gives you two starter forces – the barbaric Celts and the legions of Imperial Rome – and the glorious Hail Caesar rulebook.

This boxed game is just the start of your journey to conquer all comers and write your name in the annals of history!

Hail Caesar – Conquest of Gaul contains:

Full-colour 192 page hardback Hail Caesar rulebook

94 multi-pose, hard plastic 28mm miniatures:

30 Imperial Roman Legionaries
Roman Scorpion catapult and crew
60 Celt Warriors

EDIT: Wow forgot their other one, this one is for Pike and Shot with miniatures suitable for the ECW

Following hot on the sandalled heels of the Hail Caesar starter set, Conquest of Gaul, is this splendid Pike & Shotte starter set. For King & Country is a great starting point for playing games set in the Thirty Years War or the English Civil Wars!

This starter set gives you the splendid Pike & Shotte rulebook and two starter forces – field them as Royalist or Parliamentarian in the English Civil Wars or as one of the many protagonists involved in the immense Thirty Years War.

This boxed game is only the beginning, as you battle all-comers and reinforce your army further in the pursuit of glory…

Pike & Shotte – For King & Country contains:

Full-colour 208 page hardback Pike & Shotte rulebook

82 multi-pose, hard plastic 28mm miniatures:

58 pike and musket including command
12 Cavalry
12 infantry with Firelocks

I may pick up the Hail Caesar one. I've got some of their Celts and I really like the models. I've been meaning to pick up a Historical game for awhile.

Very cool.

I'll probably pick up the Hail Caesar set, since I already have 10 Praetorian Guard models from last year's Historicon, and I managed to find those old 30-man boxes of Legionnaires that Warlord used to sell. Not a bad start to my own Legion.

I love most of warlords products. Some lately are rather silly looking but minus the auxiliaries for rome their romans are pretty good. Have always been a steady seller for me too so can't complain on that either . For those who haven't played any of their rules they are easy to pick up. My first actual game of black powder was at adepticon for the guns.of April event we did.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

How playable is HC with smaller forces? I know it's obviously designed for huge battles, but I'll never paint that many figures. Forces, say, not much bigger than the ones in the starter box?

Using a smaller standard unit size (4 wide instead of 8 wide), 30 Romans and 60 Celts would be just enough for 1 division of each army. This would be the smallest possible amount of figures to play with, about the equivalent of about a 500 point WFB game. The command/movement structure of HC plays best with multiple divisions - three or more are needed for a "proper" game of HC.

So for a "proper" sized game, you'd really want to get 6x what comes in this boxed set at a minimum?

I could be interested in the Pike & Shotte models but I'd need to see close ups of the actual models first.

Is either system easy to pick up and learn?

Three divisions of 4 units each with infantry ranked 8x3 and cavalry ranked 6x2 totals up at about 250 figures. However, the only requirement on unit size is that both sides are playing with the same sized units. You could easily play with infantry ranked 4x2 and Cavalry ranked 4x1 & cut the figure count down to about 100.

Hail Caesar is an easy game to pick up. The system plays intuitively & a few minutes of explanation can get a newbie up and playing. I have not picked up Pike and Shot, but it uses the same core mechanics as Hail Caesar and Black Powder.

Seeing that those plastics has been out since 2009 I believe, there should be quite a few online reviews of them

I've been able to run demos to people aged 8+ with all but 2 grasping the basics pretty fast.

You can adjust the unit sizes with your opponent. Me and my regular opponent do that so standard units are 10 figures rather than 20. You can do something like that to reduce the amount of figures. But you want a few divisions at least. You could probably pull of the smallest possible game with 60 figures + 2 commanders per side. (Assuming both sides have exactly the same troops and statline. Obviously an army made up entirely of light infantry would be bigger than one of heavy infantry.)
