Hello my name’s Spog and this is my P&M blog. I started collecting Warhammer 40k when I was 10 and quit the same year, then I got a job and started it up again I feel my painting skill and patients has increased a lot since then and I think I’m at the point where I feel I should show off my work.

I have a few forces already including Black Templar’s, Imperial Guard, my own custom chapter (The Brotherhood of the Sword) and Orks. I will also be starting a Blood Angels strike force but to celebrate the release of the new rulebook I’ll be starting a Dark Angels force

Here’s what I have so far
Captain

Tactical squad 1 (the rest are bog standard tact marines)

Tactical squad 2

Scout squad

Dreadnought

I’ll be picking up paints on Wednesday to start them off, in the meantime here’s a test model for an imperial guard city fight army.

Thanks

So today I went to a GW store that I don’t usually go to, with a list of paints to get in my hands taken from the Citadel painting guides from the games workshop site.
I kicked down the door and shouted at the top of my lungs “these paints, please!”
The owner picked up the shelf of paints poured them all out onto the desk and they all lined up in front of me, I paid the £10000 and was on my way to find the girlfriend in Primark or some place.
We got back after an exceptionally long day of shopping and I slammed the paint on one of my space marines to paint up a dark angel and wouldn’t you know it? I’ve painted a salamander.

i used the painting guide to paint a blood angel captain and it worked perfectly, I don’t know if I managed to screw it up or the painting guide is wrong or what.
Heres the paints I used in order
Caliban green
Biel-tan green (seems to be the same colour as caliban, thought nothing of it)
Warpstone glow (wow that’s bright almost like a salamander)
Moot green (it’s a salamander)
Underhive ash (salamander)
Waywatcher green (why not)

I think I will just cut out underhive ash and use warpstone and moot as highlights.

Nice conversions spog. Really like the marine so far, the highlighting on the helmet, backpack and left hand is great but is perhaps a little heavy on the right foot and shoulder pad. Hope to see more from you soon!

Haha mighty bright Dark Angel ya have there

You show a lot of promise as far as painting goes. The inner surfaces of the pauldrons are spot on- you want to preserve that fine darker line between the flat area and the rim.
Highlighting is hard but you seem to have a grasp on the basics. The one thing Id recommend for you is to water down your paints on a pallette before putting them on the models. It takes longer, but you'll find you get more control over the paint when its watered down a little. Not to mention the paint will go on far smoother. As mentioned above the foot and pauldron trim have a bit too much highlighting on them, but with time you'll learn to work it out.

Now to the colors:
First off, I believe that Biel-Tan Green is a wash, am I correct? Those are best utilized above brighter layers to add instant depth and shadows. They are also really helpful when you want to give a model an overall shade.
So I'm assuming you're trying for Dark Angels. As is, your colors are way bright- Perfect Salamander but for DAs its bright. Optimally you want a dark green marine with slightly brighter highlights. Moot green is (as Im sure youve noticed) exceptionally bright. According to my conversion sheet here its like the old Scorpion green (Im still burning through my supply of old paints, so my knowledge of the new line is admittedly limited).

What I would recommend (and of course this is just my opinion, ymmv), is to mix paints rather than using them right out of the pot. This gives you infinite color options, and is how you can make the most out of your highlighting and shading. Try something like this next time:
1) Prime Black
2) base coat with a mix of Abaddon Black and Caliban Green (a 1:1 mix should be sufficient)
3) highlight with pure Caliban
4) Continue highlighting using increasingly more Caliban Green, all the way up to AT MOST a mix of Caliban Green and Warpstone Glow (figure 1:1)
5) Finally wash it with Biel-Tan green. This brings all the colors together, and smooths highlights and shadows.

In theory this should get you a marine that is a deep hunter green.

As always, Practice makes perfect! Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the reply’s I agree with the foot thing, sometimes I get a bit over excited also I’ve been using a standard brush for everything so I think I will look into buying some smaller ones.

I realize I have done the same thing on the knee, left shoulder pad and the hand lol but I’ll go back and fix that at a later date.

At least now i have a paint scheme for my next army.

Edit: The model in the pic is still W.I.P

Painted another guy up today, have been too busy the past week to do any painting what so ever, nearly finished just got to clean them up and spend an age fiddling with transfers.

Also here’s a W.I.P dread I’ve been working on. I tried to make the ven dread kit look as regular as possible so I could pass it off as a fancy looking regular dread.

Thanks

Dark Angels sergeant more or less finished, I think I’m going to add the transfers when I’ve finished the whole squad.

Thanks i should really do more on them but i haven't been able to due to sheer busyness.

Also i got the respirators from the Cadian command squad box i never liked the heads of the scouts and spent ages trying to find some new heads and almost forked out for Elysian heads, then i saw in WD391 there was an Ultramarines army with them and stalker pattern bolters, so i copied them.

I haven’t been able to do a lot on my dark angels recently, so I thought I would upload some of the stuff I painted a while ago.
Black Templars

I am going to repaint my BT at some point and get a few more models for it.

Orks

Just a couple of paint schemes I’ve been working on for a small iron warriors army.

Also my girlfriend came back from food shopping the other day with this for me

its brilliant it has a light and everything

thanks

Found some of my dusty old models in the cupboard and decided to pop down the local Tesco’s and grab some stuff to strip them with.

Soon these terribly painted models will be shiny and new all ready for repainting for my dark angels army.

3 ½ assault marines

4 soon to be devastator marines

The tutorial I am using to strip these can be found here http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?267786-Paint-Strip-Miniatures-UK-Guide-%28Dettol%29

While they are mulling in Dettol I decided my hobby cupboard type thing needed a clean.

Its been in that state for 2 years, note the 18th birthday banner
I will be finishing up the squad of dark angels tonight and putting on transfers in the morning

Thanks

Unless you've already started to strip the models I would recommend Fairy Power Spray. Half a dozen sprays, leave for 10 min, give it a scrub down under running water with an abrasive brush (like an old tooth brush for instance) and you've practically got clean models. Works fine for metal and plastic.

I already had stripped them (messily) i might give it a go when i redo my BT, thanks.

I was hoping to upload a lot sooner than this but its been hectic recently blah blah blah.

More or less finished squad of 10 marines. (9 dark angels 1 salamander lol)

All that needs to be done is drybrush the bases, paint the sides of the base black and highlight a couple of guns

A couple of assault squad poses I was pretty happy with, just waiting on some bits for the sergeant to finish the squad off.

Some terminators I’ve been working on.

photo-bombed by a fly

was going to take a lot more pictures but it started raining

thanks

Love the Termie Sgt conversion. Those bits from the Ven Dread kit?

I'm going to be stripping a couple of models (using the afore mentioned Fairy power Spray) in the near future, if you're interested I'll take before and after pics so you can see the results?

Here’s 2 blurry-ish picture’s of a test chaos sergeant, hopefully if the rumour’s are true and the models aren’t covered in mutations etc he’ll be getting some new friends along with my DA

I’m particularly happy with the back of him lol

Thanks

Hello, haven’t been able to do much for a while now but my dark vengeance box set finally came in the post and I have added them to my dark angels force.

Captain and company command squad

I was going to use the first captain I bought as the captain but when I got dark vengeance I changed him to company champion the captain in dark vengeance looks much nicer.
I’m waiting on some bits for the sergeant, banner bearer and statutory plasma gunner.

Librarian and interrogator chaplain

10 man Deathwing!

Group shot

All I need now is a few tanks a dev squad and the rest of the command squad

Thanks

still W.I.P, like most of my stuff

Thanks again

Looking good. Didn't realise you had a BA force as well.

Have you run BA with DA allies or DA with BA allies? If so, how'd it go? I ask because they're battle brothers and since I've got the Dark Vengence Box I was thinking about keeping the marines as DA to use as allies.

I guess it'll all change once the new DA codex is out though.

D

P.S I haven't forgotten about the before/after shots of a model stipped with Fairy Power Spray, I'm just reallllly slow.

Thanks i used to have a Blood Angels force when i first started out years ago they were either covered in super thick layers of paint or not painted at all most of them have become Black Templar's, I'm slowly building a new blood angels force and not rushing them so i can do them justice, i wouldn't know either way because i suck at the game XD

Lol fair. I lose a lot more games than I win so I can sympathise. I'll just wait for the DA codex and see what it's like.

I've been ill recently but I’ve managed to do a little.

Spent ages on this guy and the back looks better than the front as usual so here’s a picture of his backside.

A sergeant of the second company of my homebrew space marines.

Another sergeant, need to file off some more of that blood angels iconography.

Thanks
