Very nice work! Being a fan of the 40k universe for over 20 years now, I have just lately come to realize how little of this is even mentioned. "There is only war" is a blatant exaggeration, and even though the struggles of the civilian population of the empire may not make much in the way of wargaming, in order to have a functional and (dare I say it) "realistic" fictional universe, these aspects should be included as well.

Also, as epic and inspiring the 40k universe is to me, it's striking how little of the fiction being written that steps out of the action-adventure format. Where are the love stories that make you weep? Where are the gut-wrenging tales of families torn apart by war and life in an oppressive society. Science fiction can make you do that if written well enough. Take "The road" as an example. It touched me because I could identify with the idea of trying to make you and your family survive despite all odds. Why cannot the 40k universe be used as a backdrop for these kinds of stories, involving characters that are actually believable?

Or, have I missed some crucial piece of 40k-fiction that has already done all this that I'm asking for?

Abnett's Eisenhorn and Ravenor books, as well as his Titanicus do a good job of integrating the more human elements. Titanicus in particular used the story of clashing titan legions as a back drop to family and other dramas.

Outside of that I think the BL actively discourages anything but 'MAXIMUM VIOLENCE NOW'! (in the words of one contributor).

Kyoto, I'm not trying to start an argument or cause a problem, but I take issue with you using "AD"

AD refers to "In the Year of Our Lord", Anno domini.

Firstly, it comes before 40,000 as AD40,000 "In the year of our lord, forty-thousand." but more importantly, AD refers to a specific date (supposed Birth of Christ). In 40k, it would be safer to find the date of the Emperor's rise to power and use this date as your AD date, or simply do away with AD. (it is unnecessary, after all).

Well, I'm just bringing it up because it niggles me. It's not important nor will I be upset if you don't listen to me.

Warhammer 40,000 still refers to Jesus (AD). It's got nothing to do with the Emperor's rise. It's just everyone's forgotten who Jesus is by 40,000 AD.

No problem. I thought the AD was part of the old Rogue Trader logo but looking at the cover online I don't see it so it might just be my imagination.

"Local Sect teaches the Emperor is loving and forgiving: Public torture and execution for the sect leaders, several years in a church-run reeducation through labor camp for members and their families. Several years of theological debate in the Ecclesiarchy to determine if the sect may have actually been right, possibly followed by postumous pardons for all involved." =

Good 'ole Imperium.

The fate of their bodies do not matter so long as the fate of their souls is correctly determined.

The emperor is The Lord in 40,000.

It is also implied that the Emperor was several prominent figures in Earths history including Jesus anyway.
Though GW wouldn't want to go as far as to claim this for obvious reasons.

Back in the 80's there wasn't that hatred for Christian cultural roots that exists today, changing BC and AD into BCE and CE. The timelines are timed after Jesus anyway, if not date accurately. Its still Ad even if Jesus is not your Lord. In the 41st millenium people wont even know why that timeline is even used.

Arguably you could have a shift to reset the calender to the birth of the Emperor in 8000BC and we wouldn't notice. It could be 48K by our own calender (or 32K) and we would need be none the wiser.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

Greatly enjoyed it. I spend a lot of time reading through the Fantasy Flight RPG books that have done a great deal to expand our conception of civilian life in 40k, not to mention some of the better Black Library authors have done the same.

Might be worth expanding the section on the role of women in the Imperium. I wouldn't dispute that the lack of female representation on the table top has a lot to do with the target audience, but much of the literature has gone out of its way to show that matters of sex/gender are largely irrelevant in many aspects of Imperial society, simply because the needs of war have long trumped many prejudices. Perhaps that is straying to far from topic since it is focusing on the rank and file citizen, who's family structure would be expected to adhere to basically that of serfs in Europe during the Middle Ages.

Another article worth doing might be on out-lier societies like those of Ultramar, which are generally considered good places to live when compared to the greater Imperium.

When I first posted it the role of women got the most negatives venresponse so yeah it probably warrants a rethink.

Thanks

I think it's a really outstanding treatise! The vignette stories are as good as anything GW is putting out. It is a big galaxy though, so I imagine there some really great places to live. Ultramar is usually portrayed as one.
