Here's my main question:  Are they worth it?  Even though they have 4 wounds a piece, they are only T 4 (without Warp Strength) and cost 85 points each.  They seem like a terror on the field, yet a stray Lascannon blast or Bolt of Change would reduce them into slag.

Now, for more specific queries.  What about using them along with an Inquisitor Lord as allies to a Space Marine force?  How should they be used?  Should they be used at all?  I've been considering this for a bit, and I'd use them in an instant if they had T5 base and/or power weapons.  Suggestions?

The short answer is no. But they sure can be fun.

Negativemoney plays relictor and often uses them. Get him to pipe in.

Whenever I see them I just shoot them with a lascannon or fist them, but maybe he's getting more mileage out of them.

I'll pipe in. I use them in my DH army.

They're fun, definitely, and they have thier place. You just have to use them correctly. Get them stuck in (Teleport and time shift help with this) with the right units.

They are great at taking on Daemon Princes and Hive Tyrants. Basically, anything that isn't strength 8+ and that ignores armor saves. They are also great at tying up dev squads.

I use them as 'spoilers' in my army. Thier whole point is to mess up my enemy's plans rather than actually kill things. They will kill things, though slowly (Though if they roll bloodboil, it helps).

Avoid assault squads with them and things with a fist (Unless you just rolled warp strength, then they make great dread/defiler hunters).

Remember that you can't plan on them doing something regularly. What you have to do is be able to continuously adjust your plans with them depending on what they roll.

Yeah, what Skyth said. I run interference with them, too. You can drop them in and threaten Devs and Indirect shooters regardless of the powers you roll. Their randomness makes them unsuitable for competitive lists but they can add a lot of fun to a regular game. I usually pick two so that one of them will get a decent power.

Always outnumbered but never outgunned.

Actually, I theorize that their randomness can make them extremely well suited for competitive play, if the rest of the army is made to complement it.

Basically, they're unpredictability means that your opponents are forced to take every possible occurance into consideration when making their plans.

Your army just has to be ready to adapt to whatever situation arises by what actions the Daemonhosts can take.

I guess - if you don't know what they are going to do next how can your opponent? They might catch competitive players off guard if they haven't seen them in action before.

I just think there are too many downsides - no power weapon, non-scoring, easily instant killed, taking up valuable elite slots, etc.

Always outnumbered but never outgunned.

i've used them before and found them to be great. i agree they are the most fun rules and model wise. The randomness is one of the best and worst things about them, not knowing exactly what they is a double edged knife.they do soak up fire quite well though warp strength + regen = priceless.

always having the ability to deepstrike is also a bonus depending on your plans.
