This was a super fun game! In it, Jy2 and I play the BAO scenario and I try out my Vanilla Marines with what I think will be a true Take All Comers list for their first trial run against Jy2′s tried and true Purifier Spam Grey Knights in a 1500pts battle.

Enjoy!

And thanks to Jim for yet another great game.

Very interesting concept you have their Reecius I was really surprised at how well it performed. I think that it is such an unconventional list that it has to be played by a very skilled general. What I would like to see is how well it would work against an extreme army list that can disable the unit(s) that are their weakness. For example a nob biker army taking out the vindicator without sustaining casualties and how well the other units can work to pick up the slack.

In regards to your question about a unit being able to assault the turn after their vehicle explodes if you read the paragraph under the Explodes! effects on passengers on pg. 80 of the BRB "As all models in a single unit fire simultaneously, a squad cannot wreck a Transport and then fire at its occupants. However, if a Transport is destroyed by a shooting attack, any unit that shot it that turn can, if allowed, charge the now disembarked passengers.

So I would think that it implies that the unit is considered as being disembarked. I can see this being open to interpretation.

I see some true synergie in that GK list. Each unit perfectly complements and mirrors the others.

Wow, very entertaining game. I was surprised at how well your list did Reecius... I've read a lot on how GK basically do everything marines do but better, but you showed that normal marines can still contend.

It was hard to hear both you and jy2 at times though because of the TV/Radio(?). Not sure if someone was watching something but if you could turn it down a bit during video battle reports that would improve the quality a lot IMO!

Very surprised how much you can pack into a 1500 van list, impressive. Fully agree with the pre game analysis that van vs niche lists, creativity and adapting to it is key.

Agreed on the sound, I thought you were fine but couldnt hear jy2. Nice to put a face to him too

Barring niche lists what other lists do you think would pose a challenge? Perhaps heavy armor/MC lists since if the bikes and vin go down through bad luck or tactics, you're light on HWs?

Gotta say Reecius, I think we're all comming to fairly similar things when it comes to a balanced TAC build and like you've seen, it definately is alot more fun to play but really is a lot harder tactically thinking though it does give you all the tools you need to at least do something vs just about everything. (We're turning into eldar! - thoughts alll the way on the bottom of this giant pile on the first post in case you guys get bored and want to read something http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/460371.page)

Just a random tip on the flamernaught, we've had this guy discussed a few times on the GK thread and people have had some great success with the guy mostly flaming troops and vs other people with aegis lines, you can steal the gun and shoot them with it after you flame the troops off the thing with the dread, and even possibly the drop pod if you get a hit as you can occassionally stay 1' away from others (as the gun doesn't belong to anyone) and with fancy positioning depending on where the quad gun ended up, the drop pod can manage to stay in B2B with it (or hull to base w/e)

Locally, the exploded assault rules just don't make any sense as it seems silly so we play that exploded is the same as wrecked but we'll wait for FAQ as RAW may be interperated alternatively.

Really been working at least 2 fliers into 1500 lists, it's been much more well rounded from several different people's experiences lately for TAC builds.

Also, for the 5 man tac squad, did you roll a 2 to run away so got swept or something? wasn't clear but as you are space marines and have ATSKNF, you can't be swept at least (also no more fearless saves so you don't lose those guys no matter what), just wanted to point it out

As always, awesome battle report!

One small thing that probably wouldn't have made much difference; I don't think the Whirlwhind could have destroyed the Rhino on your turn 1. Barrage weapons always hit vehicles on their side armor...strength 5 vs AV 11 can't penetrate. Correct me if I'm wrong on this one.

If you're still in the testing phase, what are your thoughts on a Whirlwind vs Thunderfire Cannon? Barrage weapons are insanely good, but it seems like the TFC might be better. It's way more durable (Toughness 7, 2 wounds, 2+ armor), it has a larger range, it has a higher strength shot, it can still ignore cover, it comes with "Bolster Defenses", and 4 small blasts have the potential to deal more damage.

Hey... somewhat figured this out in the last game I played. If you cannot harm something in close combat (including a walker) you can opt to auto fail your leadership. As marines, when you got assaulted with that dread, you can opt to run away from the dread - and if he catches you so what you don't get swept.

I'll keep that in mind and try to talk louder next time (and probably get closer). I don't really know the range of the mics on the camera. Plus, there was a lot of background noise that day because there were a lot of kids there.

No, he got away (actually, we forgot to roll for sweeping advance) but only fell back 2" (he rolled snake-eyes for his fallback distance).

Doh! You are right, though the way I was rolling, it probably would not have mattered. My grey knights were just due for a butt-kicking that day. Lol.

That is normally true. However, space marines have krak grenades so they can hurt the dread. Also, Combat Tactics already give them the ability to auto-fail LD. However, I still need to win combat to force him to take morale in the first place.

As you said, you can only do that if you cannot harm something in cc. Marines all have krak grenades, which can glance a normal dreadnought. They can, however, auto-fail a morale check if they lose combat (Combat Tactics). It sounded like Reecius did take advantage of this, but the dreadnought caught him. You don't get swept, but you're still stuck in combat.

As for the various match-ups, I would be interested to see this list vs any Ork player. Nob Bikers are crazy, but I think Orks in general would be nasty. Even with two large blasts and the drop pod dreadnought, I don't know if you would have enough firepower to deal with 90+ bodies....or enough anti-tank to deal with 3+ Battlewagons with KFF.

Looking forward to more batreps with this list (and your Tyranids! We want to see the bugs in action!!).

@thread

Sorry for the background noise on that one, guys. We had some Young Guns playing Pathfinder next to us very enthusiastically!

@Yodisisray

Yeah, it really is an interesting rules question. We were pointed to pg.426 though, the chart at the bottom says that when a vehicle explodes, the unit inside must disembark.

I think that makes it pretty clear.

I was surprised how well it did, too! I thought Jim was going to kick my ass! hahaha

My goal was to make a good fight of it, but the army did quite well. The dice were on my side, too, though.

@SIphen

Doh! You're right. That was my mistake.

@Ratius

I think this list has good odds against anyone if played right, but it is almost always a tough game. Yes, the list doesn't have a ton of heavy weapons, but it still packs a punch. It's more about applying the right tools to the right place.

@SUdojoe

Yes, i agree. It reminds me a lot of playing my Footdar. A tool for everything, it was really fun. I am very interested in playing it out some more.

Glad to hear you guys are having the same results! That makes me more confident in our findings.

ANd yeah, I just rolled like crap to get away! haha, damn Snakeyes!

I see it as an underdog list that requires a more tactical mind to pull off against some of the more dominant armies. Unfortunately, in the hands of someone without the tactical acumen of a general such as Reecius, they are more likely than not to get crushed by the newer "power" builds.

But with experience and some creative tactics, yes, you can pull off wins with them. The best part is that winning with them feels so much better than winning with one of the current "power" lists.

Heya Reecius! So I have a vanilla list very similar to that list except for a few key areas so I was wondering if you considered these tools and, if so, why you chose what you did?

The main differences:

1 less tac squad, 1 less bike, no drop podded dreadnought, no whirlwind.

Instead I have

5 man sternguard with 3 combi flamer & 2 combi melta, rhino (and 2 more rhinos for the tac squads), 5 man scout with camo, TFC.

Techmarine can 3+ up a ruins to give the scouts 2+ cover save for objective sitting and pinning tool. TFC can ignore cover and is a huge wound generator, as are the sternguard. Rhinos for mobility

I also use machine curse instead of gate for more anti-flyer.

Obviously I'm not nearly as good a general/list builder as you are (im pretty new to the game), which is why I'm trying to understand your thought process and meta knowledge to see why your list might be a better all-comers than mine!

Thanks

@Jy2

I agree! As you said, playing your GK pre-Ward era was a huge challenge but also very rewarding. I like the underdog armies so much more.

@Largo39

Thanks, but I am not the greatest general or anything, I just play a lot! Hahaha

I would ditch the Rhinos, personally. They just kind of stink this edition as they transfer stunned and shaken onto the squad inside. That really limits their usefulness, IMO.

The TFC is awesome! Great unit. I prefer the Whirlwind because it has barrage, which allows you to snipe (such a dumb rule, but damn is it useful).

Machine Curse is good, but Gate is amazing. Play what works for you, of course, but Gate wins me games. It allows you to redeploy and it makes grabbing an objective or Linebreaker a lot easier to do. And Null Zone is game winning against some armies.

The Sternguard squad is sweet though, I actually prefer 2 Heavy Flamers and 3 combi Meltas. I find that is a super useful unit that fills a lot of roles. It's just more expensive than the dread.

I think you are fine with your troops.

Sounds like you have a solid list. If you ditch two rhinos and free up a couple of points, you can grab a Whirlwind, too, which will really add a lot, IMO.

Good luck with it!

Yeah, I mostly picked the combi flamers on the sternguard to make charges more painful against them, I'll have to play with gate. Yeah null zone is always a keeper, especially against draigo/termis.

I see your point about the rhinos, so I may drop some, though, I've been using them mostly to get the squads inside forward 12-18 and then dump the contents. Then they can start being mobile cover for the vindi, or to block off choke points. With all out I can have the vindi get his shot off and then use the rhino to move back to (at least we've been playing as such) block LoS off completely for some angles. But that is some expensive cover, and the shaken/stunner result is a good point. Hmmmm.

What to you think of getting termi armor for the librarian? It would give the unit he's attached too a lot more durability

Yeah so far it's a fun army. I hate deathstars, I always want to the david to their goliath, and it doesnt have any army or scenario that it is an auto-lose too. Of course, it doesn't have an auto-win army/scenario either, but, that means its more fun to play AGAINST as well.

If I really wanna be mean I just play my 1500 tyranids.
