Hi everyone, after playing loyalist for years I was starting to get a bit bored, so about a year ago I decided to start a CSM army but there were rumors saying a new codex would be out soon, so I held off. Finally it seems the new codex will be out within a few weeks, what with this and the nice new minis from the new starter box it seems like a perfect time to start a new chaos army.
I don't make armies to be competitive, I build them to be fluffy.The fluff for this army is it's a small Black Legion force attacking a world near Cadia to try and draw forces away from there before one of Abaddon's Black Crusades.
The first thing that I did was to paint up a Black Legion squad in order to settle upon a paint scheme.
This was the resault.

Looking pretty good there mate,if there is going to be a new chaos codex soon i may also start a chaos force.

While waiting for Dark Vengeance to arrive I thought I'd paint up a terminator squad, they're nearly done I just have to do the eyes and a few more details.Anywat enough of me here's some pictures.

Looks good! I will say though, drill the barrels on the CSMs. It will really improve them.

Also, what have you got in mind for the bases?

Thanks Squigsquasher, you're right I really should drill out the barrels of the guns before the army gets to big. So I finally finished the terminators, which was difficult as DV turned up the other day , I've assembled all of the chaos models and started painting some of them ( you can see some of them in the background of the termi pics.)

I'm back to school tomorrow , so I thought I'd best get some models done while I still had the chance. So I got six cultists painted, just have to do the bases now. I also got started on two of the chosen and the hellbrute.

The cultists came out really well, cant wait to get some myself.

What paint did you use for the skin?

@ Deathshead420 Thanks. Sorry it's taken me so long to reply, I've been completely snowed under with work (Who knew you could get so much work from four subjects. ). But to answer your question I base coat the skin Bugman's glow, then I layer on Tallarn Flesh (Don't know what it's called now.), I then layer on progressively ligther layers of Tallarn Flesh, using white.
Like I said earlier I've been completely snowed under so I haven't had a chance to do anymore painting, but I'm going to GD UK at the weekend so I'll get plenty of stuff there. Any suggestions?

Since my last update I've assembled a squad of Khorne Berzerkers and a squad of possessed, and I must say that the possessed kit is amazing, planty of variety and loads of spare bits left over for kit-bashing later, the Berzerker however really is showing it's age.

I love the dude who is running while aiming a flamer one-handed. He is a fething badass, man. Keep up the excellent work.

Loving the power weapons and lightning claws. Nice to see more Black Legion, very cool.

Wow, a couple things really jump out at me:

OSL on the plasma is wicked!

The Hellbrute is awesome... I think I'm going to use yours as a model when I am finally ready to paint mine!

I haven't got any models finished this week, actually I haven't got much done at all, I got started on the rest of the CC cultist squad, two of the ranged cultists and another of the chosen. I've only got the skin done on all the cultists and about half of the cloths. On the chosen I've highlighted the armour basecoated the deamonic sections and basecoated and first washed the bolter.
Before I show the models I have a question to ask. The other day I was looking through my old Eye Of Terror codex and the pages on how to make taitor gaurd and mutants caught my eye, I was thinking about maybe making some and using them as cultists, but then I started wondering would it look better if all the cultist were all the same ''genre'' or would it be ok to have mixed squad of mutants and DV cultist and maybe even some FW renegades?
Anyway here the models ( And a small preview. )

Just ran across this and had to throw out a compliment, love seeing a nicely painted Black Legion army! I started 40K in 3rd where the legions were more color schemes than rules and I chose Black Legion . . . who no one seems to paint. :(

The plasma gunner at the beginning of the blog really stood out to me, but everything looks good and you made the cultists each unique but work well together. Good job.

So I haven't updated for a few weeks, but I've got a fair bit done in that time. I've finally finished the CC cultists from Dark Vengeance and got started on the ranged cultists. The possessed and the berzerkers were a great to paint as they were something other than black to paint, I'm quite pleased with how the berzerkers turned out, I'm not happy though with the possessed I feel that they might be a bit too bright.
I'm looking to add some more chaos marines and some Death Gaurd. I've also got a renegade heavy stubber team in the post from forge world, so you'll probably be see that in a week or two.

I like the work so far.
Nice off site lighting. Are you planning on drilling out the gun barrels? I find that it really does make a difference with the final project.

I normally drill all my barrels too but when I did my cultist I really couldn't be bothered. They look pretty decent keep it up!

@sennacherib and @Deathshead420, thanks for the compliments. I do intend to start drilling out the barrels, but it's just one of those things I haven' gotten round to yet. So I haven't updated the blog in a while due to a mixture of the flu followed by AS modules, but I sould be back on track now, until april atleast . But on a happier note, it's been ten years since I bought my first GW mini , and to celebrate I'm thinking of geting myself an airbrush and trying out some non GW products, I'm particularly interested in AK interactive and minitaire paints, so if you have any recommendations please post them.











I'm not that pleased with how the red armor has turned out, there's something about it that just doesn't look right, the skulls and horns don't look right either, I'd probbably put this down to the fact that it's been nearly threee months since I painted a model, so I may have to come back to these models and re-do them.











I quite like this possessed as it's not to over the top with tenticles all over the place and the fact that he still has a weapon, because it makes him look like an actual fighter.

I'm a fan of CSM and I'm diggin' your possessed. Those cultist are pretty awesome too. Was eyeing up a box of them yesterday. Nice work.

@bunnygurl, thanks for the kind words , the cultists are great wee minis, considering myself some more off of ebay.

Over the past few weeks alots been going on in the hobby part of my life, I got my first airbrush so I've spent alot of time messing around on it. I also assembled around 15 plague zombies which I've started to paint up so they should be up in the next few weeks. I'm also waiting on some stuff to arrive from wayland and ebay so I can start painting up some death gaurd.

First up is the last of the first batch of possessed.




This was the first model that I used an airbrush on in my CSM collection, I'm pleased with how the claws have turned out. I'm abit concerened however that the black head makes the model look unfinished and rushed.

Last is another khorne berserker.





I'm actually very pleased with how he's turned out, you cant really see it in these pictures but he's got some blending (I'm not really to sure how to describe it) done on him which is the first time I've ever tried to do something like that and sticking with the Khorne theme just found this on google http://hg-rising.deviantart.com/art/Khorne-Berserker-Soundboard-136491810 (great fun to play around with)

So it's been a while since I did any hobby related modelling, but recently I got back into the swing of things and painted up this squad.





I've had this squad sitting around for about 4 months and when I finally got round to painting them up I wanted to try something different to the scheme that I used for the rest of the army, I feel that it made the armour look more black than the other scheme I was using. Since making these guys I've gotten into Game of Thrones and when painting these I was looking a the Dothraki and trying to get across that feeling of brutality. This squad for me was a squad to try out some new technique including a different technique for the OSL around the eyes, I also used some of AK interactive's products on this squad and I've got to give it to them they really are great products.



This guys been made from around four different kits, I specifically used the SW gun as I wanted to show this guys been around since they were the Luna Wolves.





Again the idea with this guy was to show that he had been around fighting since the Heresy so I gave him an Umbra Ferrox bolter.





I didn't want the entire squad to be stand out so I modelled these two to be kind of plain and for these two to blend into the background.





This model is defiantly one of my favourite models in the squad, the head really represents the sadistic nature of the Chaos space Marines. Though looking at the model now I feel that I need to paint some of the details on the backpack.



Both these guys really represent the worshiping side of the Chaos Space marines for me, with both of them processing mutations. I wanted them to look like they are just in the beginning of a fight.



This model is the only model which I'm not overly happy with I think that the head just doesn't match the rest of the body. This model was also the first time that I tried doing OSL with an airbrush the only problem with it was that the white kinda spluttered apart fro that I don't think the gun turned out to badly.



For me the standard bearer is one of the most important members of the squad, so I decided to give him on of the breast plates from the possessed (you can just about see it in the pic). I wanted him to look like he was standing his ground call doing a blessing from Slaanesh and bolstering the resolve of the squad.



To try and get across the brutal nature of the CSM I added this set of heads from the Zombie kit. I added the blood using GW's Bloodletter glaze, I'm not fully finished with these heads as I'm not satisfied with some of it (mainly the lips) but I also feel that the skin might benefit from a little bit of grey and maybe painting the eyes black.





With this guy I wanted him to look like he was firing into a trench and I wanted him to look like he was really enjoying himself. This guy was painted in the same way as the rest of the squad, but I think that his sword really helps to make him stand out.

Over the past few months I've been thinking up some fluff for the army and the background for the war in which they are fighting. so hopefully I'll be able to post it on here soon enough.

Good as always. The black looks a litte flat on these, but that could be the camera.

@ SquigSquasher: I'll admit they look a little flat in the pics but I couldn't be bothered waiting for a an order to arrive from Wayland games so I ended up using a GW paint to airbrush, which always give variable results. So I'll probably leave the painting of BL until the order arrives.

A couple of weeks ago while I was reading KrautScientist's WE blog and I saw these guys (the SW), and I was inspired to add a small SW contingent to my own force eventually, but when I saw a box in a game store I was in I decided to buy it, however looking around it seems that there are a large amount traitor Space Wolves running about so I decided to assemble the box as Wolf Brothers instead.





I like to think that this guy is a bit like Legolas or Brad Pitt in Troy were he's wielding two swords continuously striking the same target.



This guy was inspired by the old GW model with the SW pulling his axe back and holding a Tyranid head. I was trying to convey that sense of sense of pent of up aggression, just before he strikes.



I didn't have any of the FW autocannons lying around so I had to convert one up, I wanted to make it obvious that this is an autocannon but I also wanted it to look unique. I'm relatively pleased with how it turned out.



This guy for me is the quiet nut job of the squad silently advancing towards his enemies pouring fire into them. I think that the model represents this perfectly, the combination of the helmet and the fact that he seems to be taller than the rest of the squad really make him stand out from the rest of the pack.





This guy is defiantly my favourite model in the pack, I really like the way he's got a load of weaponry. I gave him a Tzeentch shoulder pad as I really loved the idea that these guys had to turn to Tzeentch to stop themselves mutating a bit like the Thousand Sons.

Overall I'm pleased with how the pack has turned out, however I still have to do some work on this squad (green stuffing and mould lines), so it will be a while until this squad gets painted up. I'm waiting until I get a Marauders box to finish the rest of the squad so I can add some bare arms to the rest of the squad to give them a more barbaric look. I know that they aren't SW but I like the idea that they were just SW from a different world with different coloured armour, due to the whole ''The Sons of Russ'' force.

Quick update. I've got a few models to show you guys, I just have to get pics of them. I've got three bikes, three WE from the squad shown awhile ago, an IF contemptor (-1 arm) and Angron. So hopefully I'll have pics up soon.

So I was rooting through my big wardrobe of hobby stuff and I found the three bikes from the battle force I was given at Christmas. And they result was Outrider squad Menoth.
'' Outrider squad Menoth have a long and traitorous history having been part of the legion before the great betrayal, having fought on worlds such as Davin, Istvaan V and on Holy Terra itself where they fought extensively against white Scars. However 10,00 years of warfare have taken their toll on the squad and only two of the original traitors still remain; Dark Champion Menoth and Brother Mormetor (who turned insane after being hit by a physic scream from an Eldar Farseer). The squad recruit solely form renegade SM as they are of the belief that vat grown marines and those produced by the legions apothecaries are of a lesser breed. Each of these warriors must bring the Dark Champions 1,600 heads before the are allowed to adorn the black of the legion wholly. ''




For Dark Champion Menoth I was going for a very Hawkish appearance so I used a helmet from the regular CSM box with the horns cut off. I decided to give this guy a plasma pistol as I'm really trying to improve technique for paint plasma coils, I decided to go for orange as I really like bright colours, and I thought it would help break up the model instead of it being on big block of black.



So this is brother Mormetor. So I was looking around for an appropriate insane looking head and once again the SW box came to my rescue and I feel that the head did a good job at getting across that look of ''half my brains been melted''. I also thought I'd try out giving one of my minis tattoos, I'm relatively pleased with how they turned out.




One of the new renegade recruits, Brother Apollan formally of the Dark Hunters. With this guy I was looking to giving him the appearance of leaning forward about to run down a fleeing victim.



I just wanted to show you a quick close up of the screens on the bikes as you can see I was once again practicing OSLing (?) I promise one day it'll come out right.




These are just a few WI shots of the zombies I made back in February. Quite pleased with how this guys turning out. I've thinking up some background material for these guys so hopefully I'll be posting that soon.
