So I made an attempt by the end of last year to ditch 40k and move on to Warmachine & Hordes, which I did. However, I got back into 40K after not too long.

But then I went "Seriously, for real this time" and put away all things 40k to fully focus on Warmahordes. And today I stand here again, wanting to start a new 40k army.

The reason I want to quit 40k and go Warmachine is that I can only afford to be invested in one system, Warmachine has a much larger player base in my city, and I am not an enormous fan of Games Workshop. Plus the price of all the books and stuff that you need.

I'm sure I'm not the only one, because I keep hearing about this.

Is there an antidote?

Of course there's an antidote. You got to start playing games. Past that you got to get to know your local Warmahorde playerbase, start hanging out talking the talk, and play games. Once you start to get emerged in your new game you'll find that GW will have loosened its grip on you. But as long as you're trying to be an island about it, you'll be fighting your fight alone.

THE FUN HAS BEEN DOUBLED!!!

How much GW stuff do you currently have? Can you play GW games without needing to buy more units?

If so, why not continue to play 40K with your current army while also playing Warmachine/Hordes? Simply choose to not buy new 40K stuff.

This. If you keep going back to 40k you obviously like something about 40k, so give up the absurd idea of quitting just for the sake of quitting and enjoy whatever it is that you like about 40k.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery......

Now to reality. Look at the reasons you decided to quit, were they sound and not made in haste? Is 40k where you have the most fun?

Start by being honest with yourself and the answer will come naturally.

I understand the "just do what is fun" sentiment, but it is sometimes not entirely helpful all on its own.

You may want to think about what you enjoy about Warhammer 40K and see what you can do to enjoy that aspect without getting into the things you want to avoid.

For example, if you particularly like the setting, you could try some of the 40K RPGs by Fantasy Flight.

You could also try a smaller scale slice of the 40K universe like Necromunda, Battlefleet Gothic, Gorkamorka, Kill Team, or Death Squads.

Going smaller scale would allow you to scratch the itch for new stuff without too much investment, allow you to breathe new life into old models, and allow you to get non-Warhammer folks into games more easily. You can share models from your existing collection to make several Kill Teams squads or Necromunda gangs.

I'm with the "do what makes you happy" crows. Weeble has it on the nose, try necro etc if thats what you like.

However, if you're looking for a route out, then get yourself in with the warmahorde crowd. Simple. Surround yourself with people of a similar ilk. If you were a recovering alcoholic you owuldn;t hang roundin bars would you? No, thought not. Now enough of this nonsense and get to rehab and / or you local AA meeting.

I used to play GW games exclusively. I no long play any GW games with any frequency and am almost all into Warmahordes. If you want to change, go all in. Lock away your 40k and spend all your gaming time with Warmahordes. It's a fantastic system that would love new players, or even on the fence players.

IF you keep going back to 40k you obviously still like it.
Is the only reason you keep going to warmahordes is the playerbase?
I know the feeling, Alot of players try to convert me to hordes and im tempted to just see what its like, because warhammber is growing stagnant in my club.
Just really look why you keep going back to 40k and ask yourself
"Is it the aesthetic? or is it the models, or game system"

Don't avoid a game if you like it. If you don't want to buy more 40k stuff, then don't. If you really find you have to, just get whatever you can secondhand or through discount retailers. You don't have to buy every codex out there or anything. Owning all the 40k stuff you own doesn't cost you money. Play Warmachine or whatever if that's what you want to play. Contrary to popular belief, you can both play and enjoy multiple game systems concurrently. Just give your hobby allowance to one company for the time being instead of the other.

If you keep going back is because something about the game draws you back, but if you really feel like you cannot invest in both systems then simply don't. Sell all of your 40k stuff and if your friends even mention 40k then simply just tell them to shut up because you need to save money.

I don't understand though why you can't just collect one army for 40k and leave it at that.

I play multiple systems (mainly WM/H and Infinity with 2-3 others semi-frequently) and have, so far, not been struck down by a bolt from the heavens.

I also suggest you look up the WM/H community at Dakka if you want web advise on the game...they don't bite if you post your first post at that subforum and make them tell you about the game.

I would be tempted by warmahordes if it wasn't so cartoonish/anime and silly looking. In a miniatures game, awesome miniatures are priority number one.

The only steampunk stuff I'm tempted by is dystopian wars. Those little battleships look so cool. If I really had a few hundred extra to blow and a few more dudes that I know played it, I might try that, I would have to double check the rules are solid though, and its a close race with battlefleet gothic.

The antidote is to play both.

Start with only 1 army for each, though.( THAT is the hard part.) Upside is that you focus your efforts in one area, and can plan your purchases with your head instead of your impulses.

Warmahordes, get your scratch ready for a full playable set, put it together, have fun playing in the local scene, and just have fun.

I mean, there is not enough time in the day to worry about quitting a system, until you and your gaming area finally do it for you.

This will happen by slowly and slowly playing less and less of one or the other to the poitn when you end up deciding to push off your non-played game. ( By that time, the army is done, painted, you can sell it off fully put together and painted, either as units, or the whole army.)

Want to know a secret, though?

You end up just getting more of both, and even getting into more games. You caught the bug, so just embrace it now.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

How about you just buy one army for each? The two aren't mutually exclusive if you're going to put the time in.

Divide your wage/pocket money between the two and within a couple of years I'm sure you'll have a force for both... A hobby isn't a consistent expense, at least in this case, as you don't throw away what you buy once you're done with it! You could just buy a bunch of Space Marines, leave it at that and then you can play any time in the future.

Exactly. This is one of the main reasons why I have just never gotten into WarmaHordes. I've had Cryx models for years but I've never played more than a demo game here or there. Now, Freebooter's Fate, I'm down with those models. Finding enough people to play on a regular basis is the catch. I'm also with you on Dystopian Wars. I love large swaths of the models, but I'm so-so on a naval wargame. From what I've heard the rules are very solid, but I've never played. I'll have to watch my wallet when Dystopian Legions is released...

I find it sort of amusing how people can complain about cartoonishness when all the alternative systems mentioned are just as cartoonishin their own ways. When the self-described "anime/manga aesthetic" game Infinity probably is the least cartoonish and most realistic looking miniature line of any of the contenders, you know how much these things depend on the beholder.

Infinity definitely seems awesome, the miniatures are way better than warmahordes IMO. The figs are a little bit anime comic book style, which I don't really mind as long as the proportions are realistic and it's not just barebreasted chicks piloting walkers. But compared to much of the GW range, GW is actually more cartoonish (except for forgeworld stuff). I would also consider getting into that. Happy? But Infinity also doesn't have the grimdarkness of 40k, and a lot less wiggleroom for converting stuff and making your own creations.

Keep going back to 40K? Stick to 40K. Its like the hot high maintainence ex gf you keep going back to. If shes hot enough and fun to be with, learn to cope with the maintainence. Warmachine is the girl at Burger King that flirts with you at the drive thru but youd never be seen in public with.

I'm from the future. The future of space

The easiest way to not to bother with 40k is not to be exposed to it. It's actually really easy to do so. Don't go to their website. Don't read threads about it here. Eventually 40k will just fade away like a bad dream that you forget. Just as there is a reason you start up multiple times, there's a reason you quit so many times as well.

GW can easily be irrelevant to your life. You'll likely be happier for it as well.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

You basically are looking for a group to hang out with, not going for a game system.
