Hey, I did it. 2K painted- just in time for a new edition, of course. Fortunately, it'll only take a few choice things to hit 3K.

Anyways, this last batch was the remaining Tech-Priest Dominus and the Domitar. I'm working with a new camera setup and clearly haven't gotten the depth of field quite right, so please excuse the poor focus.

I was ambivalent about the Dominus sculpt when I started, but it's grown on me quite a bit- the very odd body shape, festooned with sensor-bearing skulls on the underside, offset by the very human hooded face is exactly the sort of cyber-gothic weirdness I love about the range. Unfortunately, this is also one of the worst casts I've received from FW; there are some ugly double mold lines that I didn't notice until painting, and the 'wings' on the irad-cleanser were thin and fragile, so after one popped off never to be seen again I decided to remove the others as well. Still, I'm reasonably happy with how it turned out.

Next up, the Domitar. This is one of my favorite robot designs, though I'm not sure why. It wasn't very good in HH1.0, mostly because it was a melee-focused monstrous creature that could only move 6" per turn, but I'm crossing my fingers that it's getting more utility (or just speed) in HH2.0. Not much to say here, I just went for a slightly more dynamic pose than the FW rendition, and felt like having it stomping through a barbed wire fence.

And lastly, a group shot of 2K points. I really need to figure out what's up with the focus.

Extremely rad army shot, stupendous work. The Domitar is super cool, and yet another AdMech 30k design I've been vaguely aware of at best.

Thanks all, much appreciated.

I kept some momentum going with painting up a Lightning in the Mechanicum scheme.

This I was a little conflicted about, because heavy sponge chipping and weathering isn't usually appropriate to aircraft (fragile and high-maintenance as they are), but I figured Imperial aircraft are probably built tough and a little artistic license is warranted anyways. So I kept the chipping to the leading edges of the aircraft for the most part, and I think it turned out okay.

Ordnance is magnetized so it can be removed to track expenditure or swapped for other weapons, and the stand itself is magnetized, so the Lightning can be removed for transport and/or swapped with the Vultarax's base. I had some annoying wash pooling on the missiles, but I suppose I can always redo them separately to the plane if it comes down to it.

Still trying to get the hang of this camera so apologies for the out-of-focus elements.

That's a really interesting grey*. What colour is that?

Hah, super easy actually. Basecoat VMC Dark Grey, edge highlight with VMC Neutral Grey, chip with Vallejo Metal Color Silver, wash 1:1 Army Painter Dark Tone and water (doesn't produce a ton of shading, more just establishing definition for the next step), and then an all-over oil wash of black and burnt umber (mostly black, maybe call it 3:1, ofc with lots of mineral spirits), which is cleaned off raised surfaces before allowed to cure.

It's very close to the process I used on the Stormtroopers earlier in the thread- those were Dark Grey, edge highlight Neutral grey, point highlight VMC Light Grey, and then a wash of either 1:2 VMC Black Glaze/water or minimally diluted Dark Tone over gloss varnish.

I really like Vallejo's lineup of greyscale paints. Black, Dark Grey, Neutral Grey, Light Grey, and White are all neutral in tone and have fairly even value spacing between them, then Black Grey sits right in between Black and Dark Grey, and Grey White is right in between Light Grey and White, so working out appropriate progressions without having to mix is pretty easy.

Ok, so they're Vallejo colours. Thanks for detailing which ones you used.

I'm trying to find a colour for these things, and I've been thinking a darker blue, but that dark grey could work as well.

You don't think painting a Bastion in that colour would make it look too much like I painted it "plastic"? Friend of mine in our group once painted his Tau in a grey that made it look like bare plastic (we still don't know how he did that!), so much so that you'd pick up one of his (old) Stealth Suits thinking it was plastic and be surprised at the weight.

Neutral Grey is close to unpainted sprue, but people keep asking me how I painted the 'black' on my models, so Dark Grey seems to read as black. That said, Vallejo has a 'London Grey' that IIRC is dark and a bit blue-tinged, so maybe that would meet your goal.

Ok, yeah, I see the difference between the two. Thanks for the suggestion.

I def read the dark grey as grey. It looks really good.

Well, I burned out a bit on painting last year, but in addition to getting work done on some more Mechanicum robots (still unfinished) I 3D printed and painted a Crab from Battletech.

The detail came out a bit soft, as this printer is doing its best to self-destruct- the screen actually died while printing the base, so this is the last I'm getting out of this one. Hopefully the Saturn 2 I have on the way will produce better results, but I'm not unhappy with this by any means. I felt obligated to try out the dot patterning as a form of camo, but went with different colors from the coconut crab paint scheme. I like the result, even if it does look like a frog now.

I really like it as a camo scheme. Not a bad print considering the machine is on the way out. Is the Saturn 2 a filament printer?

Nah, another resin printer. Bigger print volume, shorter exposure times, and better resolution than my current (well, former) Photon S.

While waiting on calibration prints with the new printer, I finished the two robots that have been on my desk for close to six months.

I also got started on the plastic Battletech minis, starting with the Griffin and Vindicator from the beginner's box, in a generic camo scheme. Apologies for the slightly blurry photo.

There are a few things I'll change on future work but the broad strokes are there. I'll also be going back and adding some canopy work to the Crab, though that model's going to be redone anyways so I can compare my new printer to the old one.

I've got some more Battletech stuff to share, but at the moment I've finished getting pics of another brood of Genestealers. After these it's just some more Hormagaunts to clear out my Tyranid backlog in anticipation of 10th.

I'm pretty happy with how these turned out, especially considering the time that has passed since I last painted any Tyranids. The molds are showing their age though; despite my best efforts I clearly missed some pretty significant mold lines.

very familiar with the genestealer sprue and yet you've managed to make these poses look quite fresh and different, really well done on the head positionings. Solid, subscribed

Thanks- over the years I've observed that it's very easy to build those Genestealers into goofy barrel-of-monkeys flailing arm poses. I made a concerted effort to keep them a little more conservative and ensure the head position and overall posture match the limbs.

I'm really curious to see how the new Termagants assemble. They've got a lot more dynamism in their poses, but it's not clear how much opportunity for variation there is, or if they'll be functionally monopose.

With these last eight Hormagaunts, I am now backlog complete. I'm not 100% happy with them- I think I got the proportions slightly wrong on the all-over wash step, so the faux-highlighting isn't as strong as I'd like and it pooled a bit oddly- but certainly not enough to strip and repaint. Shots of the full army as it stands (around 4200pts at last count) to come.

I also added some leaf litter (ie thyme, oregano, and basil) to my jungle terrain, and I think it's much improved by it. Also, my terrain bin now smells like cheap pizza. Win-win.
