I've been holding off on playing my tyranids under the new 6th Edition until my tervigons were done. Well, now they're done (commissioned by Frontline Gaming) and Hive Fleet Pandora is out in full force. My goal? To see just where the bugs stand in the new 6E. Have they really gotten worse as the interwebz have decried? Or have we actually gotten better as most of us hardcore tyranid players actually feel.

My opponent for this game is the same person whom I played against in this battle. He is not a particularly competitive player, however, he does run some pretty hardcore daemon lists. And while he lacks the experience of the more competitive players (such as myself), I will be giving him some pointers on how to play daemons. For this game, he is also experimenting with some Chaos Space Marine allies to his daemonic force. Also, I have given him a 200pt handicap to make this a slightly more fair fight.

Id definately say that Tyranids came out a lot better than the internet will tell you. A question on your list, do you plan on swapping for rulebook powers? Id highly reccomend the psychic choir Tyranid theme, unless there's LOTS of local Eldar players. (and even then, it seems like the way to go)

Im also interested in seeing how the Bios do. I run 2 and love it, 8 seems like it could be wasted against certain lists. Still, looking forward to this! Not enough competetive Tyranid players out there...

First of all, the report will be out tomorrow.

Secondly, I'd like to show off some of my bugs. Between my necrons, the Apoc game I just had and my new orks, I didn't have any time at all to work on my bugs. Thus, I commissioned Frontline Gaming to help me paint some of them.

This is one of my models as a baseline - my flyrant.

Now these are the models that Frontline worked on. They did an excellent job of imitating my paint-scheme.

The Swarmlord.

Some hive guards.

And my 2 tervigons.

All in all, I am very happy with their work.

Biovores are actually a very good unit and a mainstay of my shooty tyranids. Back in 5th, I used to run 2x3 biovores and a tyrannofex. But since 6th came along, I dropped the t-fex for my flyrant and added 1 more unit of biovores. They almost always make their points back and then some. Really, they are a very good and often under-estimated unit.

Here's several of battle reports with my shooty biovore tyranids back in 5th:

2500pts 'Ard Boyz Practice Match - Grey Knights vs Tyranids

1500 RTT at Game Kastle - Tyranids

2000pts Tyranids vs Witch Hunters

Yeah, a lot of the tyranid players from 5th actually see nids as pretty good in 6th as well, including players like me, Janthkin and Reecius. I actually used all rulebook powers for all my psykers. I was testing them out. I'm sticking with Biomancy powers for multiple Endurance/Enfeeble/Iron Arm/Warp Speed. I actually forgot that you could choose powers from different rulebook disciplines! Then again, this is my first game with tyranids in 6th (in a regular game).

I may drop the last unit of 2 biovores in the future. Heck, I may drop them all for some dakkafexes. We'll see.

At first I didn't like the paint scheme you posted, but the armor patterns actually look pretty nice up close.

Though I too, am curious about the number of Biovores. I've never run a unit of them (As I find them to be the worst looking models in the Tyranid Range, unfortunately) but I imagine they'll do quite well against the amount of infantry on the table.

Agreed on Nids in 6th, they're quite good in my experience with them. The lack of KP games helps lol, and psyker spam (not to mention the new lack of psychic defence) is great. I'm still tinkering with my lists, but they've done better in 6th thus far than my Space Wolves have (seriously).

I'll throw in a quick comment here as well - I love my Nids again thanks to 6th edition! Many things scream 'improvement' for our codex and units in the 6th ed BRB.

Some of our old problems in 5th:

1.) Close Combat & Vehicles - tough nuts to crack (6's to hit? really?)
2.) Glancing only on tanks - It would take 4-6 glance results of "5" and "6" to kill a rhino in 5th. Now 3 does it every time.
3.) Kill Point Missions - going from 1/3 to 1/6 of the game types is a big buff here, but moreso:
4.) Objective missions - going from 2/3 to 5/6 of the missions is great! Tyranids do one thing well - troops.
5.) Scoring/Contesting from vehicles - I'll just say, people are actually playing with INFANTRY models again!

The list goes on and on. And someone who says 'nids are worse in 6th has never faced a Toughness 9 Hive tyrant or a Tervigon that gets warp speed and does 6 smash attacks at initiative 4!

Been out of the game for awhile, trying to find time to get back into it.

Sorry for the delay, but between work, getting in another game with my tyranids and the Walking Dead, I didn't have time to do the report yesterday.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Deployment:

Spoiler:

Map of the terrain.

For Warlord traits, Swarmy gets FNP when within 3" of an objective. My opponent gets a useless trait.

These are my psychic powers, all Biomancy powers:

Swarmlord - Iron Arm, Enfeeble, Endurance, Warp Speed
Flyrant - Iron Arm, Shooty power
Tervigon #1 (Crushing Claws) - Iron Arm, Shooty power
Tervigon #2 - Enfeeble, Warp Speed
Zoan #1 - Iron Arm, Endurance
Zoan #2 - Smite, Enfeeble
Zoan #3 - Smite, Hemorrhage

Chaos deploys the cultists with Lord and the vindicator.

Everything else is in reserves.

I deploy everything and bubble-wrap my big beasties with the small gribblies. Flyrant will start off in swooping mode.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Daemons 1

Spoiler:

My opponent gets his Prefered Wave in. However, Fateweaver scatters about 10" forwards and almost mishaps.

Cultists and vindicator advance. Cultists then run.

Daemons spread out because of my biovores. Fateweaver shoots and kills a couple of gants only.

Tyranids 1

Spoiler:
Nids cast psychic powers. All my big guys cast Iron Arm. 1 tervigon casts Enfeeble on a unit of horrors. Zoanthropes cast Enfeeble on another unit of horrors and Endurance on Swarmy. Swarmy casts Iron Arm on himself and Enfeeble on the flamers.

Man, for those armies without any psychic defense, it is going to suck playing against nids.

Tervigons spawn 9 termagants. Tyranids then advance.

Between biovores dropping 8 blast templates and hive guard shooting, I take out 3 flamers.

Gants and hive guards ground Fateweaver with their shooting. Gants then assault Fateweaver.

Swarmy also assaults the pink horrors. With the exception of bolt, which misses, the warp fire overwatch cannot hurt a T8 Iron Armed Swarmlord.

Swarmy's bonesabres cancel out with Fateweaver's protective bubble. I manage to kill 5 horrors only.

Gants and Fatey whiff against each other.

Daemons 2

Spoiler:

My opponent is not in a good spot. He decides to play very aggressively and drops his bloodletters inside my deployment zone.

As well as his Warlord, the bloodthirster.

He drops aggressively as well with his warp talons, who mishap and go back into reserves.

Same with his flamers who also go back into reserves on their mishap.

Finally, his daemon prince lands on target. My opponent makes a mistake here, thinking his DP comes with Daemonic Gaze.

Vindicator and cultists advance. Vindie only moves 6". Cultists run into the ruins.

Daemons move. Flamers get ready to torch my termagants....they didn't have any other suitable targets for their Breath.

Bloodthirster runs 2D6". Bloodletters spread out with their meager 2" run.

The 3 flamers wipe out 6 gants only.

Horrors take out 1 zoanthrope with their shooting. Daemons do manage to get First Blood with that kill.

Vindicator fires at my hive guards and tervigon. He then proceeds to roll 3 's on the wound roll.

Fateweaver tries to turn the Swarmlord into a spawn but fails.

Tyranids 2

Spoiler:
I cast my psychic powers. 1 tervigon and 1 zoanthrope perils on . Both tervigons then spawn gants without rolling doubles.

I am going after his bloodletters and thirster.

It takes 1 unit of termagants and 1 unit of hive guards to wipe out the unit of 3 flamers.

After a combination of 8 biovore blasts, some termagants and shooting by my flyrant, I wipe out 17 bloodletters.

Termagants also ground his Warlord, causing 1W to it.

Then it's off to assault. 5 gants die to Overwatch from the horrors.

Gants assault his Warlord....

....as well as his bloodletters.

Death by gants!
'

Swarmy and tyrant guard wipe out the horrors.

Fateweaver kill 2 gants.

Combat between 3 gants and 9 horrors is tied at 1 a piece.

Gants wipe out the bloodletters.

They also take out his Warlord!!!

Like I said, death by gants!

Daemons 3

Spoiler:
It is all but over. We play one more turn just to see how much damage he can achieve.

Flamers land dead on in front of Swarmy. BTW, Swarmy is currently at T8 from Iron Arm.

Warp talons land successfully and blinds everyone within close proximity. They then spread out.

The DP glides into position to breath and assault my hive guards, all the while within contesting range of an objective.

Breath hits 6 times but only manages to cause 1W, which Swarmy then passes it on to his tyrant guard via Look Out Sir.

Vindicator fires and only does 1W to the hive guards after cover.

His DP then Breaths and kills 2 hive guards. He then fails his charge!!!

Horrors wipe out my gants.

Finally, Fateweaver kills another 1 or 2 gants.

Tyranids 3

Spoiler:
I cast my psychic powers and spawn more gants. So far, no doubles so they are good.

Tervigon and gants go after his warp talons.

Everyone else goes after his DP. Flyrant glides.

Swarmy ignores the flamers to go after Fateweaver. I'll let the biovores take care of them (the flamers).

Gribblies swarm all over his DP.

Zoanthrope moves and prepares to assault his Chaos Lord just for sh*ts and giggles.

DP does not survive all my shooting, especially since he is in glide mode.

Biovores focus on the flamers and take out 4. Termagants shoot down 2 pink horrors.

Finally, I assault. Although my zoan is not a character, I issue a challenge to his Lord anyways.

Gants assault the horrors. 2 die to overwatch.

Tervigon assaults the warp talons.

Finally, Swarmy assaults Fateweaver. The Big Meanie manages to cause 1W on the Big Chicken.

Talons actually manage to cause 2W to the tervigon, who kill 2 talons in return.

Finally, his Chaos Lord kills the zoanthrope in a challenge and then becomes filled with Hatred (he almost turned into a daemon prince).

--------------------------------------------------------------

With that, we end the game. He's got 1 objective + First Blood for 4-pts. I've got 2 objectives and Warlord for 7-pts.

Had we gone on for another turn, I had a very good chance to table my opponent but once the winner is clear, I don't feel the need to do that.

Crushing Victory to Tyranids!!!

Just a quick note, Jy2 - Your deployment states the flyrant will "start off in swooping mode" but sadly that is against the rules. Flying monstrous creatures that are deployed count as 'gliding' until their first movement phase. It's a minor setback, but i think necessary for game balance since other flyers have to start in reserve no question.

Really? Oops. My bad then.

Fortunately, I've got biovores to rectify that situation. So it's either drop and stay bunched to shoot my flyrant. Then get plastered by my biovores next turn. Or drop and then spread out. Just one of the intangibles that biovores bring.

You should give them a try. Try out probably 1 unit and I think you would be pleasantly surprised. They're fairly cheap, quite survivable because you can hide them out of LOS and forces your opponent to spread out his army. They're also good at getting those MSU min-sized squads hiding on objectives or static heavy weapons teams like long fangs. As for the looks, I actually like how the newer models look, though the older style biovores are cheaper and actually easier to acquire on eBay.

You're welcome.

Your nids are quite different from mine but just as scary. As I recall, they spanked my necrons big time the last time we played (in 5th).

Coming up next, my nids against my wraithwing crons. That's going to be a good fight.

They're still going to suffer the same bad matches (i.e. DE, grey knights) as they did in 5th. However, I think that fearless, the psychic buffs and the mission types have helped them overall. Overall, I suspect that they have gotten better and will be play-testing them extensively for the next few weeks. My lists may change as well, but I normally play a more shooty-oriented tyranid army.

Agreed 100%. I think the pros outweighs the cons for nids. You think T6-spam was bad? Wait til you fight T9 monstrous creatures. Just nasty....although I do see Runes of Warding eldar/eldar allies and space wolves to still be a thorn in our sides.

 BladeWalker wrote:

Yeah, army's not done yet. My painting is progressing like a turtle. A lot of the bases and smaller critters aren't done yet.

 Reecius wrote:

Yeah, barrage sniping makes them even better. Try to LOS this, sucka....

Not only that, but the meta has shifted in 6th to be more infantry-based. Now most of those times, my biovores will have targets on Turn 1.

SevenSins wrote:

This was not his best list and I am not sure how well CSM allies add to a daemonic army, but he's made some wicked lists before, including a 2200 daemon build with 44 flamers (double-FOC)!!!

But fortunately for me, my tervigons never stopped spawning. That was huge as they churned out gants every single turn. That can quickly overcome many armies, daemons included.

Fortunately for nids, nowadays hoods aren't all that great. Only Runes of Warding and Space Wolf Rune Priests can really shut down out powers.

Thanks for the finished report, Jy2!

As you'll see from my sig, my nids are nearly undefeated in 6th edition so far - my only losses have come at the hands of a dark eldar player who spammed 3 venoms in a 500 point game (I ran a somewhat fluffy list of 15 hormagaunts, 15 termagants w devourers, and a tervigon HQ) and a narrative apoc-style game on an 8'x8' board with a 48" dead zone(vs IG!). As an aside, the mission in the very back of the hardcover BRB "Battleforce Recon" has a 42" no-mans-land. 'Nid players better bring a tyrant with wings to that one!

I think you'll continue to see success in 6th with your bugs. Can't wait to read more reports!

Good stuff JY2. I have been running nids pretty much non-stop from late 3rd till now and it is sooo much better than 5th edition.

My list I have been running has been roughly this:

2 Dakka Tyrants w/ Expanded Carapace
2x 20 Gargoyles
2x Tervigons w/ 3 Bio powers, Crushing Claws and T&A
2x 10 man guants
2x 3 Hive Guard
2 Biovores

It is funny you mentioned tossing out some Biovores to get a dakkafex. Because I tossed out a Dakkafex to add 2 Hive Guard and 2 Biovores to my current list. While I haven't been curb stomping my opponents with the list, I have been holding my own (win some lose some). I even managed a win against DE mech spam, which never happened in 5th.

I am actually planning on swapping out a 20 man gargoyle squad and the crushing claws and a hive guard to add a 3rd Tervigon + Guant Squad....just got to build and magnitize another one.

JY2, how are you liking the Zoes?

Are you primarily taking them to boost your endurance/enfeeble or mechanicum/telekenisis bubble?

If so, it seams like you run a good risk of rolling a bunch of poor shooting powers or personal CC abilities...and if that happens the unit kinda shoots itself in the foot.

I've been struggling to include them in my army. A Tervigon w/ 3 powers costs only 30 points more but is scoring, creates more scoring units, and boosts gaunts. So even if you flubb your psychic power rolls (more likely), you can still do something else with the Tervie :S

I just realized something (as pointed out by Janthkin). I made a mistake in these games. Due to not playing them ever except in Apoc (where I only ever take units of 1), I thought that the zoanthropes were Independent Characters. Actually they are not and those 3 zoeys should be in a unit.

Of course at 2K, I can play them as individual units as I can take 6 Elites if I do double-FOC's....but that was not my intention. But since the mistake was already made, assume that I ran 5 Elite selections and used double-FOC's.

Agreed if I saw a BR by Jy2 always have a sit down to have a good read. Thanks for taking the time Jy2 and I do agree that Walking dead comes first!

Thanks!

Yeah, the first time I played against Janthkin's bugs with my crons, I had a really tough time and almost lost. Just from that single game, I could tell Nids have become very good in this edition if you know what you're doing. And now that a major component of my bugs (my tervigons) is done, I am going to relish using my bugs again in 6th.

Coming up next, 2 battles against arguably the best army currently - Janthkin's necrons and my very own wraithwing crons!

_ Oh, the bugs. They do have some very powerful nasties. So, what did beat you in combat? One of those biological tanks, the carnifexes? One of the hivemind commanders, Hive tyrants?
- ... I dont want to talk about it.

LOL.

BTW, I've lost both Draigo and a dreadknight at full health to termagants before....both in the same game!

Good stuff JY2. I have been running nids pretty much non-stop from late 3rd till now and it is sooo much better than 5th edition.

My list I have been running has been roughly this:

2 Dakka Tyrants w/ Expanded Carapace
2x 20 Gargoyles
2x Tervigons w/ 3 Bio powers, Crushing Claws and T&A
2x 10 man guants
2x 3 Hive Guard
2 Biovores

I think biovores will be my mainstay, though I like to experiment and sometimes switch things up for variety. Hence, the dakkafexes. Because dakkafex + Enfeeble = insta-dead paladins and wraiths. But if I were to bring my bugs to, say, a tournament, it'll be the biovores that I will be taking with me. Gargoyles are a really good unit and I just used 1 unit recently against Janthkin:

Swarmlord + Lash Whip Tyrant Guard
Dakka-flyrant - OA
2x3 Hive Guards
2x Zoans
2x Tricked-out Tervigons
2x10 Termagants
20x Gargoyles - AG+TS
2x3 Biovores

However, I find that that many gargoyles will really impede your own movement as well. I'm happy with just 1 unit of them. Swapping out 1 unit of gargoyles + change for another tervigon + gants is a great idea. Tervigons are winners more so than ever in this edition.

Actually, my opponent's reserve rolls were quite good. It was his scatter rolls which were bad, as he mishapped 2 or 3 times. Actually it was even more than that, but let's just say I was being extra friendly because I wanted things on the table to kill.

The zoeys are purely experimental at this point. If I were to bring my bugs to a tournament, honestly I don't now if I would include them yet. But so far, I am liking what they can do. Sometimes, a force-multiplier is better than any direct offense a unit brings (depending on the unit). But don't be surprised if you see me running the Doom, ymgarls or even a 3rd unit of hive guards in the future.

Yeah, I am taking the zoans as force multipliers due to their psychic powers. Those psychic powers are really useful. For example, if I get Endurance, it frees up my tervigons to try to get Iron Arm and other book powers. Then there's other nice powers like Enfeeble and Invisibility. There's also risk that you may get some sucky power, but with 2 zoeys, there's a 2/3 of getting something useful. With 3, you are almost guaranteed to get something useful. It's a slightly gamble, but if you get even 1 of the powers you want, I think that is a decent payoff. If you get more than 1, then you've struck gold. At least that's the way I look at it.

Also, taking zoeys frees up my tervigons to play as aggressive, offensive monsters while the zoeys baby-sit my backfield scoring units and biovores with their synapse.

Hey J2 watched your vid batrep purifier spam v balanced marines, like that this is superbly laid out.

Wow nids are dangerous now. Those high toughness big bugs in particular look like they are going to be difficult to stop before crashing into gunlines.

Well played and thanks for posting.
