Hey there,

So far I'm doing very well in my league, I'm the purple nurple - the guy in first place after two battles. We have a 1500 pt and a hero deathmatch to go, so who knows, maybe I could pull it off.

Here is the list I am thinking of going with. I believe I will face either a Tau or a IG army(3+ tanks and lots of hvy weapons squads). But I think it will be the Tau that I will face based on points.

Here is the list:
Avatar
Farseer with mind war and guide Witchblad
w/2 warlock bodyguard one with Spear
Mounted in Wave Serpent with TL BL

Troops
Striking Scorps - 6
Exarch Power claw/stealth

Striking Scorps - 6
Exarch Power claw/stealth

Warp Spiders - 5

Warp Spiders - 5 (W/exarch)

Dark Reapers - 3
Exarch with EML and Fast Shot

Elites
Vyper with starcannon and Spirit Stones

8 man squad of guardians with BL

Heavy
Wraithlord with BL

Falcon with Starcannon
Spirit Stones and Holofield

Some of my choices are based on what I have available and painted(I don't want to play unpainted models - keeps me motivated to paint!)

Here are my other available models
24 guardians
1 support platform
2 War Walkers
5 jetbikes
1 shreiker jetbike
6 wraithguard

My plan is to use the scorps to infiltrate and get into CC with firewarriors or assault tanks.
Warp Spiders to be threatening go after devilfish's sides and rear of hammerheads and harras other squads.
I'll start the WL and Avatar up as far as possible to and rush in (can they really be called rushing - plod, plod, plod) and try to get into CC and be fire magnets
Farseer with the Serpent to pop out and squish the minds of crisis suits using the BL to autokill them as well.

Also, so you know, all the heavy weapons options are magnetized so they can be swapped out for other stuff.

Just some ideas for now.

Any suggestions?

Just say no to dork reapers.

I'd go buy another falcon, lose the wraithlord and reapers for more of your better stuff. No real point to the spider exarch unless yer gonna buy him hit 'n run for the spiders (even so I'd probly not bother but that's just me).

Buy the undercarriage shuriken cannon on falcons, for shizzle.

Fire dragons are your friends.

I think you need to do some rethinking about what you really want your farseer doing. At the moment you really have him spread too thin. If you want him to zoom up into the enemy back field and drop out into hand to hand with warlocks at his back, then you would need to give him fortune, a witch blade and 5 warlock buddies to back him up. Without those extra warlocks, you are going to be in trouble.  You can see about proxying them with some of your extra guardians (espicaly if some of them are the storm variety).  If you want him to guide your big guns, give him guide and put him in the flacon or back with the dark reapers (preferably in the falcon) where he's going to be useful. There isnt' much point to guilding a waveserpent since the weapons are already twin linked and you can't reroll a reroll. I personaly don't like mind war that much since the range on it is so short, but if you want him to try and use mind war, you are going to need to get in close and do so in a way that keeps you from getting shot to bits when you do it. You'll need to keep the serpent for that.  You could also move a scorpion from one squad to the other (so you have a squad of 5 and one of 7), ditch the warlocks entirely, and give the farseer fortune.  Then you could zoom up the serpent to the big scorpion squad early in the game and join them for the 3+ fortuned fun.

I would also recomend pulling the spirit stones off the vyper. If the vyper takes damage, there's a 50% chance its going to get blown up so trying to mitigate that other 50% is kind of pointless.

If you shave off enough points you can put in another small guardian squad with a platform. I'm also a big proponent of warwalkers (in large squads) but I dont' think you are going to manage to shave off that many points.

Longshot: Please keep in mind that he is working with the models he has (listed in the middle of his post) so if you are going to make sugestions for improvement, do so within the bounds presented please.

Threads should be like skirts: long enough to cover what's important but short enough to keep it interesting.

He can buy or not buy at his leisure but none of the stuff he's got painted should go in the army. So I don't see what good saying "leave it as it is, but it's still kind of weak" would do.

My advice is to go on Ebay and buy someone's sucky old Eldar army. These inevitably have several of every aspect and need to sit in a vat of castrol degreaser for a few days, but oh well

Aaaack !! uneven squads !! *runs*

Dude- i know you dont have the models now- but try get em. In any competetive environ you should NOT be playing with uneven squads.

I *love* reapers BUT as tempting as the 2xEML shots are- its a waste of points. Why? The other two team members get to shout obscenities at the tank their exarch is firing at cause their str5 weapons dont do stuff all. Keep em for MEq killin. They excell at it.

6man squads of T3 models, 3+save or not, are gonna have a tough time standing ground. Beef up the numbers a bit.
Id recommend 8 man squads for the scorps and the spiders (givin the ex hit and run in case).

Think about a FAT guardian squad (20man) lead by avatar and warlock with fortune/conceal combo. Gives them a 3+ armour save equivalent ! Nice for doing damage. Throw a star cannon in there- and they become a decent threat.

Thats going with what you have.

Why the fear of uneven squads? I realise that most players seem to like to repeat squad choices, but I always assumed that was out of laziness rather than tactical value.

Is it because people will target the more valuable squad to get more VPs out of it preferentially? That seems a strange reason. During a game, players are going to make targeting choices based on strategic and threat value, with VPs a distant third consideration. If your opponent is going out of his way to target certain squads because they have a couple more or less guys in them than another, rather than because of their position or the threat they pose, then that strikes me as something I'd want to encourage in him.

Even if you do think that an opponent choosing between shooting a 200 pt squad or a 175 pt squad is going to mean you lose every game you play, what's to be done about it? You can't make every unit in your army cost the same. Your tactical squads aren't going to cost the same as your terminators, which aren't going to cost the same as your Predators. Why get hung up about different point values?
