"China is planning on building the world's tallest building in only three months. The 220-story skyscraper, named Sky City, is being built by the same company (Broad Sustaining Building) that built this 30-story hotel in 15 days, all thanks to the prefabrication of modular pieces that are attached on site. "

http://www.geekologie.com/2012/11/wow-china-to-build-worlds-tallest-buildi.php

"Sky City will use an astonishing 220,000 tons of steel. The structure will be able to house 31,400 people of both "high and low income communities". The company says that the residential area will use 83-percent of the building, while the rest will be offices, schools, hospitals, shops and restaurants. People will move up and down using 104 high speed elevators.

They also claim it will be able to sustain earthquakes of a 9.0 magnitude and be resistant to fire for "up to three hours," as well as be extremely energy efficient thanks to thermal insulation, four-panned windows and different air conditioning techniques that were already used in their previous constructions."

You can house 31,000 people in this city-sized buildings? Are hive cities real now?

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Air pressure would be funky all the way up at the top. It would certainly be a wonderful engineering feat, if it was earthquake proof and basically indestructible.

I can't see any reason why this is a good idea. You can accommodate 31 thousand people in a couple square blocks in New York, without building a vulnerable eyesore like this. 31 thousand people is absolutely nothing in a city of millions.

With the same amount of money, you could invest in repairing china's destroyed ecosystems or its decrepit infrastructure, and create spacious living for millions of people who might as well be living in the Han Dynasty.

Doesn't this qualify as infrastructure?

Even if it isn't the best use of resources short term, it is a good experiment.

By figuring out ways of increasing population density, we can reduce the need to expand outward. Meaning less land is lost to urban sprawl and can perhaps even be reclaimed.

And since when has China given rodent rear about the environment?

You're missing the idea that once this is done, it can be done again and again at smaller and larger levels. The key here is the prefab modular pieces, a method that's quickly changing building construction. If China can use it on this scale and have this centrepiece to show the rest of the world what it can do, then it call out the methods to all kinds of construction.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Not really - you're only talking about a 5% drop in air pressure. You experience the same sort of pressure variation just diving into a swimming pool - and faster. When people do high altitude training you're talking about an altitude of ~2,000 metres, not 500.

I wish them all the best, and hope that it avoids the social problems you sometimes see in this sort of high density housing.

Not even close...Hive Spires reach at least a kilometer high and extends two kilometers deep underground. The former value comes from a common description of Hive Spires extending kilometers into the sky, while the latter comes from a good rule of thumb in structural engineering that a building's foundation should be at least twice its height above ground.

1 story = approximately 3 meters

So, that would be more or less 108 meters high, 216 meters deep.

I think that might be a little off the mark. The Shard in London is 310 metres high but I don't think it's foundations are 620 metres deep....

Even Petronas Towers foundations weren't that deep:

Wiki wrote:Because of the depth of the bedrock, the buildings were built on the world's deepest foundations.[9] 104 concrete piles, ranging from 60 to 114 metres (200 to 374 ft) deep, were bored into the ground.

As I said, its a good rule of thumb, but it isn't an absolute, seeing as the width of the structure (among other things) also factors in.

UNless you're counting the bedrock its hooked into thats not logical.

EDIT: a quick check on the intranetz shows that figure is way way off, unless you're building on unstable soil. As an American we don't have unstable soil, because we're Americans. Our soil is strong god fearing freedom loving dirt.

A good rule of thumb it may well be but it doesn't look like it's a rule of thumb that any building on earth follows.

I suspect it isn't a linear correlation between height and foundation depth, so while a 2 storey house may fit the 'foundations twice as deep as height' graph, by the time you scale up to a skyscraper, the proportion is completely stretched.

Then again, I'm not an architect so I don't really know (or particularly care to be honest)

Not far from reality. Sinic cultures favor the use of draconic correction systems. since in Sinophonic world, a man (or woman) MUST ABSOLUTELY obey superiors, and the relationship doesn't just limit to the relationship between ciitizen and state. but in cultural sense too!
Singhapore code of law is heavily based on Chinese customary laws. since compassion never exists there.

I can say this because I have no chinese ancestry. that is.

I'm not either - I'm a geologist

Took only one term of structural and barely passed it...(cough) anyway, back on topic, it doesn't really come close to a Hive Spire, seeing as Hives tower kilometers into the atmosphere and plunge kilometers deep underground.

Does it means the hive city is a city built as a ONE-TALL tower with several spires? Doesn't it built by merging several existing towers together coupled with supporting poles that had its foundations buried deep several kilometers away?
