Counter Assault on Saios will be a 6(?) game campaign designed by MarcusScipio with (rather minor) aid from myself. Also playing will be ChaosLegionnaire (who is brought along mostly due to his super pretty terrain collection, as well as a couple of other friends in our local play circle who may not be cool enough to have Dakka profiles (but we'll forgive them)

Each battle will show the progression of the conflict as the Imperium descends to free a planet from the clutches of Chaos, and also ends up embroiled in an ancient battle for an Eldar artifact.

Please feel free to comment as we post (we do love that) and also to offer snide remarks of our brilliant (or less than) strategic decisions
All battle reports will go into this thread - the table of contents will be updated to provide links to the relevant battles, so it's a one stop shop for everything in our campaign.

The prologue battle should go up sometime this evening when I'm willing to work at typing it up.
Other battles will follow on a 'as we do them' schedule, but we're hoping to knock them out over the course of the winter season.
Additional minor battles may happen and will be imputed as needed.

A Listing of the current achievements for the final battle
Spoiler:

It occurred to me that we're a handful of games in and are winning and losing certain conditions that will affect the final battle. So I'm just going to keep track of those here - to a certain extent this is moe for 'internal use' but for those players in the Campaign who post here this will probably be useful to them as well as me.

Imperials
One free Orbital Bombardment
One free Legion Relic Strategem to the Black Templar

Chaos
One free Orbital Bombardment
Two Free Bastions
Obstacles Strategem

Looking pretty close to even right now, should be interesting to see where it goes from here.

Battle 1
Prologue: The Elendil Thrakul

The Fluff
Spoiler:

Farseer Diyneer sat up sharply in her bed, her head ringing from the wild and terrible screams echoing through the night.
It took her a moment to realize that the person screaming was her...

Her attendants and aides had rushed to her almost immediately. Soothing words were spoken, and warm sheets were wrapped around her shoulders as they questioned what had upset her.

"The mon'keigh drink, the recaff," she said softly, "I want some."

Used to her unusual proclivities, her aides rushed off, leaving her a moment to consider what she had seen.

"Saios," she whispered softly, using the mon'keigh name for the planetoid. "They are coming back to Saios. Has it been that long already?"

She had seen them, the massive transports of the Imperium of Man as they had coasted through Warpspace. They were going to Saios, and they were going to set in motion everything she had feared for the last four centuries.

"Summon the Seer Council," she ordered as her recaff was delivered, "there is no time to lose!"

400 years Prior to the fall of Saios to Chaos Attack...

Planetary Governor Leghe's program of re-education and arrests had met with success. The xenos influences allowed by his predecessor were being fully expunged from the sector. The inquisition’s Ordo Xenos had already commended him on the capture of the Tau emissaries and was en route to take possession of them. Even the inscrutable Priests of Mars, on nearby Iunden, had sent a gift in recognition of his services to protecting them from the further ruination of the sector to alien influences. Only one thing still vexed him, the inability to access the stasis field vault he had found near the ruins of Al'Dulbecco's estate. Al'Dulbecco was descended from a storied line of rogue traders, something of value was in there and as planetary governor it belonged to him.

Thus it was he dispatched Colonel Alterman of the Saios PDF along with Techpriest Engineseers in order to properly secure the vault.

Colonel Alterman frowned as he and his men disembarked from their landers and he was allowed to properly survey the battlefield for the first time. The Al'Dulbecco estates were still in ruins from the fierce fighting that had torn through this part of the capital city, and it was suspected there were still potential alien sympathizers in the district.

"Spread out the men, full battle squads, get the Manticore into cover to guard our advance." His aides rushed off to bring word to the platoon commanders and their sergeants. Beside him the head Techpriest let out a soft whirring click sound that Alterman had learned to interpret as a polite throat clearing. He glanced at the red-robed priest. "Something troubles you?"

"You are advancing without armored support."

"That's what the Manticore is for," grunted Alterman as he waved his hand at the missile laden war machine, "besides, you can't expect me to manage to move much armor through here in the middle of the night, can you?"

"Why not wait until morning?"

"Because by then other things might be here as well." Alterman smirked. "Don't worry yourself, priest, we're going to be already in secure holding of the facility long before the dawn comes." He gave a shark-like grin as he smoothed his bushy moustache down with one hand, "and then, with all our support flying in, I'd dare any xenos scum to try to uproot us!"

--------------------------------------------

Farseer Diyneer of Ulthwe glanced up at the Dire Avenger Exarch as he brought her a fresh cup of the mon'keigh 'recaff' drink. She accepted it as an odd habit, but she had decided that the strange brew helped her clear and focus on the visions...especially early in the morning. The Exarch probably had some opinions about the habit (and, undoubtably, on how many hours of his and his men's time was spent rooting out fresh sources for her amidst the rubble of the ruined mon'keigh lair) But he, wisely, kept his council to himself.

"They are here," she announced in no uncertain terms.

"My men stand ready, as do the forces of the Tau," the Dire Avenger answered immediately, already prepared for battle. "I consider Justlance and his forces to be an acceptable ally in this battlefield, and we shall see you safely to the artifact, have no doubt. We shall finish this matter tonight."

"No..." Diyneer closed her eyes again, trying to shake away the visions of fire, blood, and desolation that flickered on the edges of her awareness. Howling green skinned beasts, cackling twisted shapes of Eldar in blue and black armor coated in blood, fearsome black armored warriors wading through fields overflowing with corpses, and putrid beasts crawling forth from the very depths of madness. She took a bracing sip of the brackish black-brown mon'keigh drink and gritted her teeth slightly as she tried to keep her voice calm. "No, my friend, I'm afraid this is only the beginning."

"But we are ready to ambush them..."

"Yes," she smiled reassuringly and accepted his hand as he helped her to her feet, "yes, we are ready to ambush them."

She could see the paths of the Elendil Thrakul arcing away in front of her with fearsome clarity at this moment, and only one thing was certain.

All she was fighting for this day...was to delay the disaster.

The Armies

Spoiler:

COLONEL ALTMAN'S SAIOS PDF (Imperial Guard)

A Company Command Squad (with a certain pie template dropping advisor, natch )
Three Blob Squads of twenty Guardsmen, 2 Flamers, 2 PW Sarges, 1 PW Commissar, and 1 Priest w. Eviscrator each.
Three Platoon Command Squads
3 Heavy Weapon Teams (1 Lascannon, 2 Autocannon)
1 Manticore
2 Stormtrooper Squads w. 2 melta each. (held in reserve Deep Strike)

FARSEER DIYNEER'S TAU/ELDAR ALLIANCE

Um...what you see (I need to start demanding that they hand me copies of their army lists, don't I...man I'm bad at this...)

It is 2 Crisis Suit Squads w. Shield Drones.
2 Stealth Suit squads w. Gun Drones
1 unit of Kroot (held in reserve for flanking)
1 Hammerhead
2 Devil Fish
3 Firewarrior Squads
2 Pathfinder Squads

1 Eldrad (Diyneer)
1 squad of Dire Avengers

The Setup
Spoiler:

1750 points per side.
Deployment is Dawn of War
Mission is The Relic - exactly as it is used in the core rulebook

The PDF wins the roll for side selection and takes the 'right' side of this picture.

The Anubis head in the central building conglomerate represents the vault with the Elendil Thrakul secured in it.

The PDF deploys normally - big blobs near the center to drive forward for the Relic.
Manticore hiding behind a building.
Heavy Weapon Teams on the flanks in the hopes to manage to offer fire support.

The Tau set up with their infantry near the middle as well, and support shooting elements on the flanks.

The Farseer wanders away from the Dire Avengers apparently more interested in joining a squad of Stealth Suits.

Hammerhead setting up wanting line of sight to the Manticore...

Then the Eldar/Tau steal the initiative...egads!

The Battle
Spoiler:

The Hammerhead's huge gun signaled the beginning of the tau ambush, but though the blast incinerated a few Guardsmen, it did little to the Manticore.

On the right flank Colonel Altman's Heavy Weapon teams reported contact with Tau Crisis suits, even as the missiles impacted their location, destroying an entire lascannon crew in seconds. On the left flank a squad of Autcannons is totally obliterated.

Additional sightings were made, more Crisis Suits popping out of cover, firing, and then scurrying back into hiding (just like cowardly Tau do...)
Also seen was a Devil Fish gently coasting along the side veranda of the ruined palace.

"Prepare to send the militia levies forward," Altman snarled.

"But, sir, they are poorly trained at best, maybe if we dug in here?"

"That's right, they are poorly trained, but that's what they're here for, I need them to claim the palace, and I don't care how many of them it costs me...now CHARGE!"

The PDF infantry squads surge forward, ready to bring some pain to the Tau Firewarriors and Pathfinders already infesting the edges of the core palace.

One of the levies presses forward hard, managing to make it to the vault before the xenos, immediately the techpriests go to work as the defense forces takes up nervous guard positions.

Altman holds a base on the left flank as he orders the Manticore and distant artillery resources to fire - unfortunately his barrages do little to soften up the enemy forces.

"Sir," his standard bearer announced, "we may have a problem here."

"I am well aware of our artillery failure, but we still can push through by weight of numbers and-" Altman's voice died in his throat as his aide physically grabbed him and turned him to the edge of the left flank, where even now a squad of Kroot were leaping forward towards his command squad.

"The mon'keigh are claiming the artifact, it is vital that we stop them!" The Tau forces had mostly agreed to this feint as a means to distract and weaken the mon'keigh forces enough to enact a rescue of their imprisoned Water Caste brethren. That said, they were not against the idea of inflicting some damage on the Imperium's forces, and so obediently moved forward.

The Farseer led her own Stealth Suits straight forward, hoping to oust the mon'keigh from possessing the Elendil Thrakul.

The Gun Drones and Stealth Suits unleash a hail of firepower into the main human squad attempting to breach the vault, and cause severe casualties.
(Despite 3+ cover saves...grumble, mumble. I only made 2 of 14 saves!)

The Tau are advancing slowly and methodically - using their superior firepower to sweep the Imperials from the ruins.

A bird's eye view of the battle for the vault.

Colonel Altman grabbed the vox, "send in the reserves, I need anything we can get! I need fire support, anti-vehicle countermeasures, heavy infantry advancing on our position!"

Copy that - Colonel. Low level insertion proceeding...

The Stormtroopers dropped down onto the battlefield, readying their melta guns as they turned to the nearby Devilfish and Hammerhead. They would destroy the Hammerhead and only lightly singe the Devilfish.

The battered left flank squad advances to try to slow down the Farseer and her unit.

"Sir, we report, we have gained control of the item in the vault."

"Good, replied Altman, "now pull back!"

"Copy that - pushing the Xenos back."

"No, PULL BACK YOU LACKWITS!"

"Copy - aiming for the lightweight units.

After claiming the objective the other squad decides they'll be safer in assault than trying to retreat back to their lines.

"Kill the Tau! Kill the Eldar! For the Emperor!"

Their Commissar and frothing Priest led the charge as the left flank squad charged forward to engage Diyneer's forces.

"Foolish, Mon'keigh, you throw you short lives away on an errand that will avail you naught." Diyneer drew out her gleaming witchblade and sprang into the fight.

"Face me, filthy Eldar witch!"

"You shall find me as firm in courage as you are in aroma," she announced as she accepted the mon'keigh's challenge.

"I shall purge you in fire and fury!" The mon'keigh covered in tassels of holy scripture lumbered at her wielding a chainblade of unreasonable size. Diyneer didn't even feel that she needed to be able to see the future in order to dodge the attack, and she stepped under his swing and deftly gutted him.

Around her the swirling battle raged, the mon'keigh in black managed to saw apart a few of the gun drones, as did his fellows, but the Stealth Suits held firm and the battle would continue.

The squad with the relic failed to make their assault, though the reasons are uncertain. Some say it was the first few of them being cut down by counterfire. But others suggested that the sergeant had become distracted by the glittering relic he held. His vox communications becoming an odd litany of descriptions of bending light and the glory of the the fire.

The Tau press their attack. Moving forward to wipe out the Platoon Command Squad that had moved up to cover Colonel Altman's retreat from the Kroot.

The confused squad holding the relic was torn to pieces by focused fire from the Tau, and fell amidst the rubble, the Elendil Thrakul falling at their feet.

In a last ditch effort to rally the battle, Colonel Altman ordered a full on focus on the Tau warleader, the Stormtroopers responded in good order, their hot shot lasrifles chewing apart his support squad. But when they called in ot the Manticore to finish him off the frightened pilot managed to drop the payload on the heads of the Stormtroopers instead.

3 Completed Turns.
Tau/Eldar have 'First Blood'
Both sides have Linebreaker
Neither side holds the objective.

Tau/Eldar Victory!

The Elendil Thrakul will be protected by the Eldar...

Team IG MVP - The Stormtroopers...seriously, those guys did like half the killing my entire army did. From wrecking vehicles to almost killing the enemy commander for the tie - they were my go to guys.

Team IG WTF - The guy playing them (yeah, sorry IG lovers, I don't play my IG often. Mah bad!) But, other than that, probably the Manticore - though I did keep forgetting the Barrage aspect, that sucker still underperformed, just sitting there and gaining a lot of fear but...not actually doing anything. I should have taken some Ogryn or something...

Team Tau MVP - The Pathfinders - as usual, they were a quiet and strong force that helped everything else kill a lot better. Probably little extra nod to the Stealth Suits, which really did the bulk of the killing.

Team Tau WTF - I'm not sure...maybe the Kroot? They kind of wandered out, got shot up, and then walked around some more. Yeah they got me to 'run' with my CCS but...so what, it's not like the CCS was there to kick butt in any case, so...?

The Fluff
Spoiler:

"We have it, Farseer." The Dire Avenger dropped to one knee, pushing aside the bloodstained mon'keigh corpse as he reached down to pick up the Elendil Thrakul. Diyneer's eyes watered as she tried to look at it, the impossible curving crystalline formation causing a throbbing pain in her head. "We shall return it to the Craftworld and-"

"NO!" She caught herself when she realized all the DIre Avengers were looking at her like she was mad. She tried hard to sound calm. "No, it is imperative that it does not leave this planet, it would bring assured doom to us all if it does." She motioned to the shattered palace behind her. "We need to go down, down into the depths of the substructure of that building, and we need to bury it, bury it so deep that none may ever find it."

Not that it would work. Things like the Elendil Thrakul had a way of...being found.

"We shall do as you order, of course." The Dire Avenger bowed to her as he motioned for his men to form up. "We shall not allow this doom to affect the Craftworld."

Diyneer simply smiled at him, wishing she had a glass of recaff. It was true that if they had tried to remove the Elendil Thrakul from Saios that it would bring doom to their Craftworld. But, the sad truth was, even if they didn't remove it then it also almost assuredly spelled doom for them all. But at least that way there was a sliver of hope...and sometimes a sliver was all you could try for.

I just downplay myself in order to fish for compliments

Also - I added in that new planet mostly for the guys if they do go ahead and do some of their own minor battles - I figure there is some nice functional fluff to justify an Ork/Templar dustup on it, which would add to the overall depth of the campaign without needing to be a major effect on your storyline.

Just a suggestion(s). That infantry platoon should not have commuted as hastily as it did , those heavy weapons teams were a waste against a highly mobile army , another platoon would have served you better , or adding 50 conscripts with " send in the next wave" to make a meat shield for your advancing platoon

I'll happily agree that a pile of conscripts would have been muy bueno for me in this matchup - for as mobile as they were the Tau were crawling along, and a meatshield could have slowed them even further and allowed me to scuttle off with the objective and hide. I usually build TAC though, so wasn't building for the mission so much as just bringing a pared down version of my regular foot list.

Also , instead of Heavy weapons squads , get something that is at least partly durable , TANK TANKS TANKS they are the creme of the crop for guard , for the low price of 150 points you get a Large Strength 8 AP 3 Ordanace blast ......... i think it would've done bettter against them but thats just me

In fairness to Thor we had decicided to bring fluffier lists to make the story work. His competitive guard list is much heavier on the tanks, tanks, tanks side. Also we had also decided to play the center of the board as a ridiculously packed morass of ruins. Very hard to maneuver vehicles into that space and to draw lines of fire.

Very little can reliably kill AV14 front armor , use the tank as cover for your infantry - on the other note I was aware of the whole fluff thing just throwing out suggestions

I think in the grand scheme of things your comment on AV 14 is very true. However, the one thing Tau do well (when bringing a competitive list with 2-3 groups of broadsides) is pop AV 14. If Thor had wanted to make my life miserable he would have brought some vendettas to instakill my crisis suits and hellhounds to torrent flame the rest...

I've never actually had issues with broadsides. But yes I see you point , With PDF's some of them actually have very large mechinized assets ( As in a Commisar Cain novel when orks invade a planet ). As for tactics, while fighting Tau , use the close city streets to your advantage , Eradicator pattern leman Russ's shine here ignoring both your armor and cover save , If you we're to take conscripts and use them as a wrap for your adancing platoon while having cover while the fodder takes th brunt of the casualties . While that happens he could have sneaked out the relic and taken the day ...

The Planetstrike battle is up and posted.

Due to our Black Templar player having some "real life" conflicts with his "job" that gives him "money" it looks like we're going to bounce ahead to Battle 3 - the Cityfight next, because you can't try to reclaim a Black Templar fortress without the Black Templar - it doesn't make sense.

I may need to bust out my Imp. Fists for that one too...

So, yes, Cityfight will be next, and there's discussion of making it Dark Eldar+Dark Eldar vs. Chaos+something.

I'll keep you all updated as we learn more.

@SBG - Thank you very much sir.

I think the current plan is to hopefully manage the next battle sometime in January.

We're also trying to juggle things because my job is taking me out of town from the end of January into July. So, really unless we plan things really well for a weekend raid on my part (an 8 hour round trip, or 6 if we play at my house...) either there will be a bit of a delay for the final battle...or maybe they'll do the final battle without me and try to coordinate with some of our other players.

Siege of Sigismund's Iron Fist is now up and ready for perusal.

It was a very interesting scenario designed by Marcus Scipio - and I have to admit it was one of the funner games I've ever played, and had a lot of back and forth action to it as well.

Plus, y'know, over 100 pictures posted in the batrep - that too

Orks and CSM vs. Black Templars and Space Wolves/Vanilla.
Plus awesome terrain.

Back in the mix, and we have a new battle up - a Apocalypse game. Chaos/DE/and a touch of Orks vs. Dark Angels/Space Marines in a brutal battle for a Hive's Soul.

A good refresher for us, and for me especially since I've been out of practice in playing *and* in doing Batreps.

We should be doing up the Kill Team mission Thursday after next.

Chaos x. DE or IG (I'm undecided storywise - feel free to try to sway me )

Also, maybe whatever other race blunders into the affair if we can get some of the other guys to show and make it a 3 or 4 way dance.

The final conflict should probably then happen within the next week or two thereafter.

I will throw in DE as I really like seeing your DE stuff. Perhaps the same poor saps could have a nervous break down from the laughter.

I think you should clean the dust off your Eldar and run them...

I probably have enough painted at 350 to handle that.
It would also make story sense, which might be nice...
