Subject: Ultramarines 3rd company. Putting down my brush, thanks for the good times.
First post is now spoilered, explaining the original purpose of the thread. As it goes now, it's an army blog, I hope all new comer enjoy, and the regulars continue to enjoy.
This army is intended as a fluffy looking (ish) Ultramarines 3rd Company, with parts of the 1st, and spooky reinforcements from the Legion of the Damned.
[Original post]
Spoiler:
So, I've decided that I needed a new captain for my Ultramarines. A model that really fits the theme. Now, I like the Masters of the Chapter models, and I like parts of the Captain Sicarius model, but I don't really want something that every Tom, Dick and Harry in the world has an HQ choice, so after toying with some ideas, scouring eBay and Bitz Box for the perfect model and parts, I have found a character that looks like an Ultramarine at his prime. A man who brings death to the enemies of Ultramar and the Imperium, a character that looks like he could lead the 3rd company. I may use him as a counts as Sicarius model, maybe just a normal captain, we'll see. But, without further ado, the WIP of Captain Mikael Fabian, comments and criticisms please.
EDIT: As is explained later down, I've now turned this into just a 3rd company blog, from about halfway down page 1, the blog turns into a fully army blog.

That looks badass for sure. Though I feel like he is aiming too high in the air, perhaps lowering his pistol slightly would work. But other than that, the addition of the random bits looks well placed and not overdone and crowded. Good stuff! I look forward to seeing it painted

Cheers bro, glad you like it, I wanted him to stand out without looking overburdened. Now you mention it, it does look too high, I'll try and get it at a better angle.

As Anticitizen suggested, I've lowered the aim of the pistol, I also removed the back tabbard after deciding that my GS skills are pretty good for getting rid of imperfections, yet too lack lustre for sculpting. Here he is with the first coat of Macragge Blue, more pictures when I add the next shade and if it's suitably different, if not, a few layers down the line. Also, if anyone has any ideas for improvement or ideas for what to do with the banner, they'd be gladly appreciated.

Honestly, something pretty close to your profile pic would be cool for the banner, with the wreath passing through the Ultra and the skull in the center. Maybe put a ribbon underneath that has his name on it. It would be a challenge to freehand but it would look awesome if you could manage it.

That's a pretty good idea, I might get my hands on the FW brass and transfers and see if I could get the effect with those, I know I'd be disappointed with a freehand version, no matter how well I did it

The blue is done, and the first coat of red has also been applied. Upon seeing the pictures, I've noticed a few bits that need a little touching up, so they'll get done asap. Once again, I need your opinions though; what colour should the crest be? I'm thinking maybe deep red, white, or some kind of striped combination. Also, these may be the last pictures I post for while, the girlfriend is on my back to do some real building and finally put up all the flat packed furniture in our new flat. Bloody woman...

I'd go for a bright red headcrest... Is the blue meant to be so... how should i call it... irregular? I like it, mind you, but it looks to me as worn armour... not at all ultra-like...
Keep it up, i'll keep an eye on this

Camkierhi - What a load of rubbish... Amazing!
Rogue Wolves - Its rediculous how much character you pack into those guys
Skalk Bloodaxe: I know those will be awesome when finished, but right now they look like crackers.

I've always seen them shown as white...I take it he's based on a Honour Guard model. Take a look at artwork of the roman legions before you decide the colour as well.

Cheers for the input guys, I'm going to try and get some more work done on him as soon as I get time to anything other than work and do DIY.
@MauS: That's reflection from the camera flash and shoddy highlighting on my part making the blue look so worn, it doesn't look as bad in real light and actual size, I work nights so I can't get a daylight picture really, and since we've just moved into the new flat, there's nowhere to set up decent light box. I wanted to stay away from a bright red crest though, since he's 3rd company captain, I don't want to overload him red.
@Rotgut: I've never heard that before, I hope it's not true though since I love servo skulls and I use them to represent digital weapons.
@Liamahead: He's based on the Sergeant Kallistus model, he was a limited run model in a 2004 army box. Nightmare to try and find one these days, and always at a ridiculous price, there's a picture of him SM codex on the showcase page with all the veterans.
@Willnaut: I really like that idea, I think I'll go for a deep red with a few black stripes.

Subject: Re:An Ultramarines captain worthy of the title.
I finished working on the red yesterday, I tried out a new technique with the red, I think that'll be changing that, as the drybrush is a little pale and sticks out too much, not as much as it looks on the pictures, but still enough to annoy me. The eyes need some orange and white, and I'm changing the gems to be green. Now for the bad news. Captain Fabian no longer has a company to lead. Me and my girlfriend broke up earlier today, and this is the only model I have managed to get back. Now, in the midst of moving into the new flat, I am now moving back to the family home, I have to rebuild a company, and I have no time to be doing any painting or modelling. So, for the last time in what might be a very long time, maybe even for good, here is Captain Mikael Fabian.

Cheers man, but these things happen, just gotta get on with it. I managed to pull myself together and get some metal done on him, so I'll post pictures up later, which, unfortunately, will be of inferior quality due to her keeping the camera.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Now, as I said, these pictures aren't the best quality ever, but they show what's been done. I did some work on the gold and made a start on the silver of the power sword.
The gold on the backpack and right shoulder is paler than the rest, just to mix it up a little.

The love life is sorted, so the project is back on track. The white is done, the brown of the leather still needs finishing, the base has been started, and I've done the crest. The sword is also done, but I still need to start the plasma pistol, other than that, all that needs doing are the purity seals and scrolls and the servo skull. and the banner, that bloody banner...
EDIT: And I forgot to add that the soft armour needs doing, and that the face grill will not be gold, I'm not entirely sure what made me paint it gold in the first place.

Thanks man, I don't know what I'm going to do with it yet, I might stick a symbol or something on it, or just some writing, I'm going to have to think it over. I'll probably decide after doing all the other purity seals and scrolls, just to see if there's already too much writing on him.

I haven't gotten round to doing anymore painting, I've been trying to make a decent helmet for my Chaplain Cassius. The Genestealer skull didn't work out, but here he is.
I've also removed the tabbard, as I've already stated, I'm crap at doing them, but I still keep trying.

Right, since pretty much nothing escaped the break up and get back together, I've decided to just cut my losses and start my 3rd Company all over, so here's how they're looking so far, obviously, nothing is anywhere near finished, as it's me and I switch projects every few layers, but all are in different stages of WIP, and WILL be finished.
I've also got Cassius to be left bare for a few days, until my very super Ultramarine Sternguard come, as they are my collective vow on the B&C. As a side note, any Ultramarine players who have anything to get done, head over to the Bolter and Chainsword forum, get to the Librarium painting challenge and enter for the Ultramarines forum, we need the vows.
But, anyway, here's the pictures, I like to give the Tactical squads an individual flavour, and I try and make all sergeants from all squads stand out as individual characters.
Tactical squad I
Tactical squad II
Assault squad I
Devastator squad I
As always, C&C are welcome.

Not a huge update, but good news, got a few weeks off work so I have more time for painting, and not partying, ignore the bottles in the background, they lie. Since I'll be doing more though, I'll be posting more regular updates, hopefully with more work done. Also tomorrow I have to pick up Sergeant Chronus from the Post Office, so I can make a start on my Sternguard.
As you can see, I decided to add stripes to the helmet after all, and re-did the tabbard and the banner, they were boring me. And the knee, I swapped the knee decoration to the other knee, I almost forgot about that, it's so petty.

Hi! I saw the link in your signature and thought it would be some kind of story you'd written, and I'm pleasantly surprised! They look really nice so far, I really like that crest the most though, how did you do it? And when will you get around to finishing the captain? I know it's neary done, but I want to see the rest of the stuff done too. And some of those tactical guys look like a few in your gallery, are they all that survived? Not even the two rare metal ones?

Hey, thank you very much. The crest I did with a coat of Celestra grey, then a Drakenhoff Nightshade wash, then I decided to add two stripes of Khorne red with a wash of Nuln oil over the red bits.
As for finishing him, that remains to be seen, I spent all the time I had for painting yesterday doing the squad sergeants, so all are now blue and have the red bits started, and since I have to pick up more stuff today, I'll be distracted again, I will get him done soon though, I just prefer to paint blue over any other colour, and I get distracted by modelling new things far too easily.
And unfortunately not, they're me remaking them in a similar way since I liked the idea I had originally, this time I did the whole squad though. And nope, not even the metal guys, the Legion of the Damned are okay though, but I daren't go and rescue them just yet.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Well, the squad sergeants are all blue, and have the first coat of red, I need to touch up the places I got red on now though and then finish it off. I've also swapped the gun on the Devastator sergeant for a combi-melta.
And in other news, I picked up Sergeant Chronus and the Sternguard weapons sprue today, I also got my other two combi-flamers and his head in the post. Unfortunately though, the powerfist and shoulderpad only got despatched today, so there's no pictures of him until he has an arm.
But, without further ado, the sergeants:
Tactical squad I
Tactical squad II
Devastator squad I
Assault squad I
Unfortunately, the highlights don't really show up on these pictures, I'll take better ones soon, because I spent a long time on those highlights.
Automatically Appended Next Post: After much deliberation, I've decided to scrap the powerfist on the Sternguard/ Tyrannic War Veteran sergeant in favour of a lightning claw, it seems like it'd be better for killing 'Nids, it looks cooler, and I figure it'll work better for character challenges after the enemy has been softened with massed flamer, well, fire. I've also decided to give sculpting another go, sculpting part of the Tyrannic War Veteran badge under the parchment of the shoulder instead of putting on a Deathwatch pad, I'll be saving that for another member, when I decide what figure I'll use.
