Hi
I have been building a huge chaos army for the last 4 years, it totals to around 4000 points with painted and unpainted models. Quite frankly i'm sick of it i all now, in conjunction with the new 6th edition rules and codex that have been brought out, i feel that some models have been over priced( points wise) and i'm sick of now having to buy new models brought out in order to compete. cultists helldrakes etc.
I was gaining confidence, just starting to venture out off the kitchen table from playing friends and entering in to tournements but now the new rules and codex has been brought out its knocked me back to the drawing board as i now feel chaos are no longer the galactic force they once were.

I originally got in to the hobby due to my love of painting. I've recently decided that if i'm spending countless amounts of money and time painting them, i should assemble a kick ass army that is versatile in competing against fast armies, shooty armies and combat armies.

the trouble i have is that my knowledge of painting and my knowledge of my chaos army itself out weighs my knowledge of anything else regarding strengths of other armies, ive heard that necrons and imperial guard are good? i like the look of orks they look like a fun army to paint. i do have an ork stompa knocking around in a box somwhere that i could add to the 1500 point army if i ever wanted to expand. i also have an avatar of khaine and an imoteck storm lord too but dont let that distract you in giving me your advice on what new army to start.

so, if you could give me your dream 1500 point army and the army list you would run that would be great.

much love <3

thanks for your time reading.

Purifiers? who do you meen? imperial guard. Ok ok so what makes imperial guard so good? What you are basically saying is these are the best army in the game in a competitive sense. whats the army list you would run? i need an exact list so i can just go out and buy the lot in one go.

Chaos will and can absolutely do well in a tournament, let none tell you anything else! And if I had to build a chessy 1500 point list I would go for a Grey Knight purifier list, or a Imperial guard list of sorts.

But I play Eldar, and so if I had to choose between butt ugly GK and IG I would take my Eldar any day of the week.

true my friend but so does loosing no one likes attempting to keep your chin up when youve just had your bottom spanked.

Anyway. Folks please dont laugh but i really like the attractiveness of the orks is there now way of making a hard to the core ork list that could beat an IG army

well they would if there were suh a thing

long story short there is no such thing as an OP army and asking for one is a bit silly, as is the want to win over the want to play. as i've always said, loosing is a great way for you to modify your army and find what works for you

the chaos codex has some pretty strong units such as flying DP's with the black mace, sky fire havocs (or havocs full stop) and also hell drakes (even if I do hate the model). cultists make up for nice blobs that can sit on objectives and chaos marine blobs can run stuff off objectives which is nice

as for orks, I'm yet to play them fully in 6th but I hear MANs are pretty damn good right now

my little space marine army, now 20% cooler http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/424613.page

Purifiers are GK dudes with force swords, can take other weapons, and are stupid good in melee.

As for IG, there's a lot of tricks, such as 9 vendettas, or 9 basalisks, or both, marbos great, hell hounds a great, heavy weapons teams a great, IG is pretty great. Until melee.

Fixed that for you. One sided massacres and harvesting your opponent's tears when they ragequit are how games are meant to be played.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

The necron bakery is probably the cheesy list I'd use if I was a low enough person to ruin a person's day of gaming. I don't think I'd ever change my choices. I'll stick with my Eldar thank you.

+1 This.

Cheese is the refuge of the weak.
Anyone can pilot a spamy, OTT list to victory. Real genralship is earned by those who take the time and patience to learn their codex and how their chosen units work & synergise together.

For example, 1st turn auto-winning vs a Daemon army by Warp Quaking the entire board proves nothing. Niether does tabling an opponent with 69+ flyers when they have little to no viable anti-air abilities.
Playing a TAC's list and achieving a winning record however takes some actual skill.

Cheese lists also tend to put all your points into one OP thing which leaves you with a bunch of models you can't use most of when it gets changed/ people start to run counters

Only if you run a deathstar. At lower pt levels, Eldar is still competitive. You could go for an S6 spam list.

Guilty as charged. I tend to spam the old str 6 weapons myself. It isn't really cheese though.

Actually it was originally using the shroud to deep strike immortals around the field. What happened was the few people that write blogs can't come up with new names for things, so...

If I had to start all over again I would probably go either Grey Knights or Chaos Deamons. But if I was playing a cheese/power-gamer list I would probably get bored with it really quickly then go build fun but less competitive builds like a full khorne army.

Cheese is more fun.

Makes the game easier; lets you forge a narrative more enjoyably since you don't have to worry about the win. Because it's ensured.

no army is that good

Even the best has to have a capable pilot.

For 1500 pts I'd say Daemons Good ole Flamer/screamer spam.

Or

Imp Guard

My personal favorite though is Orks.

I'd use standard marines, give them a gray and dark green paint job (so that they can be run as SW, DA, or SM without taking too much crap).

I'd build a list around 3 Grey Hunter Squads with x2 meltas, 2 LF squads (one all PC that other all ML), 1 Terminator WL, a Plasma heave swiftclaw squad, and a small Wolf Guard Pack with a CML and some heavy hitting Termies. Then put everything in DP that can be.

That should translate well into DA and SM, is fairly $ effective and is some serious hurt no matter which of those three codices you decide to run.

Chaos are better than they were, stick with it. Pick up the 80 zombies pack from Wayland for $60 and you can skip the other new toys imo. Don't need the zombies either, but damn they're fun!

I'm still happy with my 3 armies - foot IG, CSM and 'crons, would not do anything differently if I was to start again.

Clearly you missed the insane horror show that was 7th edition Daemons of Chaos... So broke even an 8 year old noob could pilot it to easy victory!

40k players don't know what real steamy cheddar is anymore.
Closest this game has come is 5th ed Grey Knights. Fantasy on the other hand? Needed an entire new rules edition that was designed around outright nerfing Daemons just so you could even play the damn game! (and in the process, undead became all but unplayable they sucked so bad...)

The word "Cheese" can be interpretted in many different ways in the game of 40K. It is often applied to armies that have units the break many of the established rules with little or no downside (ie, Necrons), or those armies that are points priced at a much lower rate than comparable armies (ie, Space Wolves). Any army can be made OP or filled with spammy goodness, its just that some armies, due to their codex, are better at it than others.

You want some CSM brand Velveeta? Throw out a few heldrakes along with an All-Nurgle army and give your opponents a heaping serving of some Nurgle Smack & Cheese!

"I originally got in to the hobby due to my love of painting. I've recently decided that if i'm spending countless amounts of money and time painting them, i should assemble a kick ass army that is versatile in competing against fast armies, shooty armies and combat armies. "

I don't see how meeting those goals would require you to start a new force.

I think you should work with the new Chaos codex and see what you can do with what you have; you've already invested so much time and effort into it, it seems a shame to just shelve it.

You might consider posting your army lists here and see what other people can suggest to improve them. I'm sure there are plenty of other chaos players who are in the same spot, and they may have suggestions for good builds and unit choices that might help you.
